2 Annual Bread for the World Offering of Letters Here s an opportunity to make a difference! Write letters to your Congressional representatives at the 2010 Bread for the World Offering of Letters on the weekend of May 8/9. This year s letters will urge our senators and representative to adopt changes to U.S. tax policy that will benefit low-income families. This is our 8th Annual Letter writing campaign. The Offering of Letters this year hopes to help policy makers understand that ending hunger requires a broad array of policies like protecting and strengthening key tax credits for low-income workers and their families. Expanding the EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit) to cover families of more than three children, and making the Child Tax Credit available to more lowincome families are examples of tax reform that could help low-income families have more money to feed and support their children. Tables will be set up in Daniels Hall and the south entrance on May 8 and 9 for the writing of letters; all materials will be supplied, including stamps. Sample letters will be provided for you to copy, but you can add a personal message also. You may want to bring your own return address labels to save your writing time. In 2009, 240 letters were written. Let s send a record number of letters this year!

Please contact Suzanne at , ext.26 or sfoster@archmil.org Correction: In the text of my talk on the sexual abuse scandal I misspelled the word Hebephilia a condition in which an adult, usually male, is sexually attracted to post-pubertal adolescents (14-17). Fr. Mich [Referring to the text in his letter sent out with Breaking Bread newsletter] Immigration Corner Good Shepherd Immigration Study Group (GSISG) An Update on the US Bishop s Justice for Immigrants Campaign. Thank you again to all who participated in the Justice for Immigrants [JFI] postcard campaign in March. As you know the objective of the campaign was to encourage Congress to take up comprehensive immigration reform legislation in Here is an update on the effort. On March 11, Bishop John C. Wester, chairman of the U.S. Bishops' Committee on Migration, met with President Obama to discuss the moral urgency of passing immigration reform and the impact of current law on families. On March 11, Senators Schumer [D] and Graham [R] released a framework for action on immigration. On March 21, thousands of people marched in Washington D.C. to raise awareness for comprehensive immigration reform. On March 28, the JFI committee of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee held an Immigration Vigil at St. Joseph Center as the culmination of the JFI postcard campaign held here in the Archdiocese. Approximately 270 people from 112 parishes, churches, religious organizations and universities brought postcards to the vigil. During the following days JFI members met with and delivered 4734 postcards to Senator Kohl, 3666 to Senator Feingold, 729 to Rep. Ryan, 1856 to Rep. Moore, 1014 to Rep. Sensenbrenner, and 273 to Rep. Petri. On the weekend of May 1/2 masses and prayer services are happening simultaneously throughout our nation in support of immigrants and immigration reform. Archbishop Listecki is asking all of us to be part of this national effort sponsored by the JFI Campaign in support of fair and just immigration reform, to pray for immigrants, and to ensure that our Catholic values are an essential component of the on-going dialogue.
