M J. L, O.P., P R. C W. B, O.P., P V D J P. L Today we celebrate the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Each of the readings includes a blessing and a sharing of food. They remind us of the central place of meals in our lives. Each meal brings to mind other meals: the sharing of cookies and milk, pizza and beer, loaves and fishes, bread and wine. When we prepare a meal for our family, our friends, even strangers, we always put something of ourselves into the preparation and the meal itself. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ reminds us of what God put into the preparation for this meal that we celebrate today. We share this sacred meal and are transformed as we remember the death of Jesus and the sacrifice that nurtures our faith, sustains our lives, and supports our work T M O A M In Genesis, it is an intimate gathering. Melchizedek, both a king and a priest, blesses Abram, a man chosen by God, using the simple food and drink of ordinary meals. Abram's response is to offer God a part, ten percent, of everything he has. In Corinthians, Paul remembers the gathering of friends and family, the blessing of bread and wine at the meal the night before Jesus died. Jesus gave, not just part of everything he had, but all he was: his Body and Blood. In Luke, the meal is large, unplanned, and most there are strangers. Jesus' response is simple, Feed them. The Apostles, overwhelmed by the number of people and their scant resources, don t know what to do. But Jesus, taking what is available, two loaves and five fishes, offers a blessing and there is more than enough. T M O A L Growing up, my family said grace before each meal, recognizing that what nourished us came from the work and sacrifice of other hands, those who grew the crops and those who prepared them for eating. We asked for a blessing on the fruits of those who labored. We recognized that even the simplest meal comes from the bounty of God through the sacrifice of Jesus. It is the blessing that transforms each of these meals and the participants. The value of the nourishment, bodily or spiritual, is blessed, remembered, and celebrated. Abram, Paul, and Jesus understood where our nourishment comes from. Our lives are nourished in body, mind, and spirit by the sacrifice of others. Today, and with every meal, we remember and bless the sacrifice of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, who gave his all that we might be saved and transformed. A Every Thursday 8:30 8 with Confessions 7-8 Stewardship O S The more popular name for today s Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is Corpus Christi, which of course in Latin means the Body of Christ. The Church has celebrated this feast at this time since it was proclaimed by Pope Urban IV in We are asked on this day to concentrate on two expressions of the Body of Christ the Holy Eucharist and the Church itself. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1327) states the importance of the Eucharist quite succinctly and directly: In brief, the Eucharist is the sum and summary of our faith. At the center of every Mass is our celebration of the Eucharist. The word Eucharist comes from the Greek word eucharistia which means thanksgiving. It is through the Eucharist which we receive the Lord s greatest gift to us, and it should be in thanksgiving and delight which we receive it. This holy day should also remind us of all those things for which we PRAYERS & READINGS P H : Corinne Kerrigan, William A. It is through thanksgiving for all we have received, especially the Holy Body and Blood of Christ through the Eucharist, that we find the motivation and the commitment to be good stewards. The Pontiff Emeritus Benedict XVI in one of his writings spoke of the Eucharist in this way: In the Eucharist a communion takes place that corresponds to the union of man and woman in marriage. Just as they become one flesh, so in the Eucharist we all become one spirit, one person with Christ. Today we thank God for the incredible gift to us of the Eucharist. catholicsteward.com Q V Quo Vadis means where are you going? in Latin. F N The first approved apparition of Mary appearing in the United States occurred in a small town in Wisconsin on October 9, 1859 just a year after the apparitions at Lourdes, France. Three times Our Lady, who identified herself as the Queen of Heaven who prays for the conversion of sinners, appeared to a young Belgian immigrant woman, Adele Brise, in Champion. Mary instructed her to do the same and gave her the mission of evangelization and catechesis: Gather the children in this wild country, and teach them what they should know for salvation. Go and fear nothing. I will help. At the time of the apparition Adele was 28 years old, and she devoted the rest of her life to teaching children. At first she traveled by foot from house to house through dense forests full of bears and wolves. Later she began a small school and some other women joined her in this work and they formed a community of sisters according to the rule of the Third Order Franciscans, although Adele never took public vows as a nun. She died on July 5, The Norbertine Community arrived in Wisconsin from Berne Abbey in Holland in 1893 and would serve her Sisters of Bay Settlement, in what was referred to as the Belgium Peninsula in Door County, Wisconsin. The Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help at Champion is a Marian shrine, located within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Green Bay. According to Catholic Online (catholic.org), While no one can actually prove a supernatural occurrence, there are other factors that can be considered. The Church judges apparitions on the basis of their consistency with Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradi- As a child, Sr. Adele s face was deeply scarred in an accident with liquid lye. While some may think that the Holy See (the Pope) or a conference of bishops makes such decrees, the Bishop is the one responsible for judging the authenticity of apparitions that are said to have occurred in his Diocese. The Champion apparition was formally approved by Bishop David Ricken and announced on December 8, 2010 the feast of the Immaculate Conception. In announcing the validity of the apparition, Bishop Ricken said that Adele s life was among the most convincing evidence adding, She really had an evangelistic spirit and lived that out not just immediately after the message, but her whole life long. St. Norbert, well known in the early 12 th century as a gifted minister of peace and concord, had a great devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. In fact, many of his works of reconciling feuding people were the result of his bringing them to celebrate the Eucharist. Since Corpus Christi and St. Norbert s feast day don t fall on the same day this year, we wanted to continue our Eucharistic Procession tradition started last year and tied to our (Continued on page 5) Around Our Parish Upper St. Norbert School students participated in a Spring retreat held at Daylesford Abbey.
