1 ST. MARY MAGDALEN Page 1 BRIGHTON, MICHIGAN ALL THINGS CONSIDERED COME, HOLY SPIRIT!! On the Church s calendar, the Feast of Pentecost is the third most important celebration. It completes the Easter mystery, which is when Christ poured out His life, the Holy Spirit, upon His disciples. St. Cyril of Jerusalem ( ) served as bishop of Jerusalem. Cyril wrote a catechism, an explanation of all that we believe, for those who were preparing for Baptism. In that catechism, he offered an explanation of the mystery of the Holy Spirit by comparing the Spirit to water. Like water, the Spirit gives life. As rain, water falls on everyone but has a different effect on everything watered by the rain. It brings forth flowers, grain and towering pines; each enriching the life of others; the water cleanses and renews. In the same way, the Spirit brings forth a variety of different gifts and ministries in each of us. What was amazing is that this fourth-century saint had no clue of how large the earth was, nor did he know the science of water s importance. But it gives me a great deal to think about, especially as I ponder the presence of the Holy Spirit in my life. I hope it offers some insight and inspiration to you! Happy Pentecost! A PENTECOST POEM Amado Nervo, a Mexican poet and mystic, wrote: Alone we are only a spark, but in the Spirit we are a fire. Alone we are only a string, but in the Spirit we are a lyre. Alone we are only an ant hill, but in the Spirit we are a mountain. Alone we are only a drop, but in the Spirit we are a fountain. Alone we are only a feather, but in the Spirit we are a wing. Alone we are only a beggar, but in the Spirit we are a king. THE RESULTS In Galatians 5:22, St. Paul used the word fruits to describe the effects or the results of the Holy Spirit in our lives. As you left today, you were asked to draw a slip of paper listing a fruit of the Holy Spirit from a basket. I hope you will pray that the Holy Spirit enable this gift to grow in your life. And remember that this result is a gift, produced by the Holy Spirit within us, not for our own good, but for the good of others! As St. Paul said to Timothy: May God who began this good work in you, bring it to completion! Fr. Dave Howell THIS WEEK S LITURGIES June 9, Monday - St. Ephrem, Deacon and Doctor of the Church 1 Kgs 17:1-6/Mt 5:1-12 9:00 am +Yvonne Dezarov June 10, Tuesday 1 Kgs 17:7-16/Mt 5: :00 am Communion Service June 11, Wednesday - Saint Barnabas, Apostle Acts 11:21b-26; 13:1-3/Mt 5: :00 pm +Helen Dehanke June 12, Thursday 1 Kgs 18:41-46/Mt 5: :00 am +Celestine Emerick June 13, Friday - Saint Anthony of Padua, Priest and Doctor of the Chuch 1 Kgs 19:9a, 11-16/Mt 5: :00 am +Fr. Later, God instructed him to cut two new tablets. This passage begins at that point, and offsets the mistaken notion that the Old Testament always presents a stern and angry God. 2 Corinthians 13:11-13 This passage is the ending of Paul s second letter to the Corinthians. The Church chose this passage for Trinity Sunday because it mentions all three persons of the Trinity. The passage also contains a familiar greeting we hear at the beginning of Mass. John3:16-18 Here Jesus speaks to Nicodemus. Lest Nicodemus misunderstand, Jesus explains: God sent his Son to save the world. A personal decision to accept and follow Christ as Savior is required. Reflect: Name one way in which you experience God s presence as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

3 ST. MARY MAGDALEN Page 3 BRIGHTON, MICHIGAN Religious Formation News from Mary at mmahar@parishmail.com and Karen at sect2@saintmarymagdalen.org Milton wonders if you managed to get the kids signed up for JWJ!!! Weird Animals (where weird is wonderful!!!) our Vacation Bible School is scheduled for July 28 - Aug 1. Here at St MM we call it Journey with Jesus or JWJ for short. When kids feel weird, different, or even lost in a crowd ~ nothing compares to the extraordinary love of Jesus! Register now to attend or to be a part of the planning committee (it takes a lot of helping hands!). Sign up at the formation table! The forms are on the website to register as well! Youth in 6 th gr and older are encouraged to join our roundtable leadership team! I know it is the beginning of summer and time to relax, kick back and enjoy our great Michigan outdoors! But think about it, from the outside our children/youth may just look like kids, but on the inside we need to help them find how God works in their lives. We need you! From catechists/aides to hall monitors or substitutes and nursery help - there are many areas that are flexible to meet your availability. Whether you would like to volunteer as a catechist, cocatechist or assistant, we train everyone who works in our classes! If you are interested in helping in the fall program, me for more information! Consider being on the Formation Team! You don t have to have children to join us! We need people from all areas of the parish to help us have a broad view on all the issues we discuss and action plan on! Have you registered your youth for fall classes yet? Register for fall classes in the office - regardless of your ability to pay. Confirmation Retreat for our current 9th grade youth is set for August 8/9 and will be overnight. Get your registrations in. Summer Hours: Karen will be working in the office 8:30-noon each day. With the Mahar Inn open and our daughter Cathy here this week, I am most easily reached in the morning or by . Youth News from Margaret at yminister1@gmail.com And Stasia at stasiaeisenhut@gmail.com Join us as we celebrate a great year together from 6-9pm at the Wagner s home in Brighton this Sunday evening, 6-9. Third year running at their home! Thank you for your hospitality!! Plans for next year are already underway. The youth leadership team is excited about what is to come. There will be a few summer meetings that they will plan, and I will advertise here. Check here weekly for details and locations. Our destination for this summer s work service trip as of right now is Mayflower, AK. In an article off the internet from The Weather Channel page, I copied this quote Karla Ault, a Vilonia High School volleyball coach, said she sheltered in the school gymnasium as the storm approached. After it passed, her husband told her their home had been reduced to the slab on which it had sat. "I'm just kind of numb. It's just shock that you lost everything. You don't understand everything you have until you realize that all I've got now is just what I have on," Ault said. When we take over 40 teens and adults from our parish alone and join with over another 30 from St. John s and St. Augustine s we are providing help for these victims. Not only do we physically help by cleaning up or helping to rebuild but every time we listen to their story or share tears, we are lifting a burden. Our mission of the trip is to be the hands and feet of Jesus; to spread hope and love to those who feel forgotten. Pray for our upcoming trip, and for the victims of storms everywhere! Should you want to help and volunteer your time with the teens of St. Mary Magdalen in the youth ministry program, contact me at yminister1@gmail.com and we can talk. Maybe you have talent you would like to share or a powerful story of faith you can tell us. Be a part of their journey by becoming involved. It is a rewarding experience, one that I cannot describe. You need to become involved to know the positive power of our youth! To reach me during the summer, it is best to do so at yminister1@gmail.com or in the office from 8-noon. PRAYER SHAWLS: Our creative knitters and crocheters have done a wonderful ministry in making prayer shawls for those who are ill, hospitalized and those needing God s gentle love. If you know someone who would appreciate a prayer shawl, please call Sister Maryetta,
