3 A Challenging Verse For The Year Ahead! 41 years is a long time! Likewise, 28 years is also! My question is simple - how do churches and spiritual leaders and parents and teachers or any Christian leading others in any ministry endeavor... having needs beyond their human ability... how do they keep on doing it, how do they keep from giving up in despair or caving in to the pressure? What is an entity/person against so great a task? I m confident that you know the answer. Actually, it s a truth found in the lives of many of the great people in the Bible. With God s calling come God s enabling! This is more than a cliché! It s Bible. I Thessalonians 5:24 tells us, Faithful is He that calleth you, who also will do it. Have you experienced this truth? Have you experienced firsthand, the enablement of God, when the needs were great and your hands were weak? Sure you have! Have there been others? The book of Nehemiah tells us that Nehemiah was one who faced an overwhelming task against relentless opposition and yet, with reliance upon his mighty God, he completed one of the greatest building programs in history. Listen to Nehemiah s prayer in 6:9, Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands. It s not that a building program is on my mind but it s my verse for the new church year before us. There will doubtless be Satan s opposition coming in many forms as we seek to go forward for God. O God, strengthen my hands. Maybe you would like to make this verse yours as well. God can handle your prayer, too! Pastor Devin Why come to Sunday School? Sunday School is a time to fellowship with one another, to delve into the Word of God, to find out what He has in store for you, and a way to get your most intimate and personal questions answered about God and yourself. The Bible tells us in 2 Timothy 3:16,17, All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine (teaching), for reproof, for corrections, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. Please join us each Sunday morning to see how close to God you can really get. We have had a wonderful summer with our Sunday School lessons and are looking forward to beginning a new year. September 4th is move up Sunday for all our school age students. Below is the list and location of the individual classrooms for our younger learners. Under 2 years old - Miss Christie / Miss Angie 2 year olds - Miss Rachel 3 year olds - Miss Marianne / Miss Phyllis Educational Wing Pre-K - Miss April / Mr. Matt Kindergarten - Miss Becky / Miss Thelma 1st grade - Miss Jennifer / Miss Susan Triple-Wide Building 2nd & 3rd grade - Miss Beth / Miss Alice 4th & 5th grade - Miss Jennifer / Mr. Brian Family Life Building 6th thru 8th grade - Mr. Dan / Miss Pat 9th thru 12th grade - Pastor Josh Parents, please encourage your children to attend Sunday School for we see in 2 Timothy 3:14,15 the importance of learning God s Word at a young age. It is written, But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them/and that from a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Jesus Christ. For our adults, there are many classes that you can choose from and I would recommend any of them as they are all led by wonderful people who love God and only want to serve Him. All classes begin at 9:15 and end at 10:00 am. I hope to see you all on Sunday morning.
4 Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!!! Wow, what blessings we received this past Sunday as we celebrated First Baptist Church of Inwood s 41st anniversary and the 28th anniversary of Pastor Devin s pastorate here! God is good! Thanks to all who participated in the presentation if the music. The primary purpose of Christian music is to praise the Lord. Note the following references (emphasis by bold type mine). I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High. (Psalm 9:2) Be thou exalted, LORD, in thine own strength: so will we sing and praise thy power. (Psalm 21:13) The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him. (Psalm 28:7) Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. Sing unto him a new song; play skillfully with a loud noise. (Psalm 33:2,3) Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. (Colossians 3:16) That should suffice. (Did you notice that it said to play skillfully? That requires ability AND practice.) Now, back to my main point. We find that most references in the Bible to singing or playing music are for the purpose of praise, so most of our music should do that. The Apostle Paul taught us in that last reference that another purpose of Christian music is to teach and counsel. But notice that he even mentioned psalms - but also hymns and spiritual songs. So it appears that teaching and admonishing with our songs is very important, but secondary to praising our God. Let s examine the music that we use in church and that we listen to each day and determine whether it follows these scriptural guidelines. Praise and worship our Lord and teach and learn the truth of His word, the Bible. Let s sing it and preach it. Announcements September is upon us and so is the fall music schedule. However, due to our Labor Day holiday and to the fact that Jessie and I will be on vacation for two weeks out of the month, the Choir will not practice until September 18th, nor sing special music until September 25th. Rehearsals will be at 4:45 each Sunday afternoon, unless otherwise announced or posted. We will begin Christmas Choir rehearsals the first Sunday in October; this will begin at 5:15, starting out, and will get earlier as we approach the presentation of our Christmas musical. The Worship Team will also be on a hiatus from practice and presentations after the first Sunday in September until their next rehearsal on Wednesday, September 28th, in preparation for the first Sunday in October. The usual times for presentation of special music from our worship team and choir are as follows: The Worship Team does special music and helps me lead the congregation in worship on the 1st and 3rd Sunday mornings of each month. The Sanctuary Choir does special music and helps me lead worship on the 2nd and 4th Sunday mornings of each month. We also usually have a Praise and Worship Night once every three months led by our Worship Team. Finally, Jessie and I would like to take just a moment to thank (in advance) Pastor Josh for taking care of leading singing and also the people who are running the audio-visual booth while we are gone on vacation. So, Thank you. Sigamos alabando al Senor (Let s keep on praising the Lord), Brother Greg Meeting Venue: Oak Grove Baptist Church 2106 Churchville Road Bel Air, MD Please sign up by September 14th at the foyer bulletin board. Church vans will be leaving at 7:00 AM.
5 HOW TIMES FLIES! Summer is almost a memory. However, fall is a favorite for many. God s handiwork supplies our many beautiful fall colors. Too often our lives are on auto pilot, taking for granted everyday beauty. When our summer colors fade and the red and gold of fall begin to show, take a minute and enjoy these changes. While you are at it, thank God for all he gives to us. Below are upcoming activities. PLEASE NOTE, THERE ARE SOME CHANGES FROM OUR USUAL ROUTINE: We will not be meeting the 3rd Thursday of September. Instead, on Saturday, October 1st, The Golden Agers and The Corner Stone Sunday School class will meet at Kirk and Jeannie Marsh s home for a fall picnic. The picnic starts at 11:30 AM. Kirk will provide chili. Everyone one is asked to bring a side dish to share to complete the theme. And of course, dessert is a must; don t forget a drink too! A sign-up sheet has been posted on the foyer bulletin board. Please stop by and write what you will be bringing. Our church van will be available for those needing a ride. Put a V beside your name on the sign-up sheet if you plan to ride the van. Thursday, October 20th at 11:30 AM we will meet at Pizza Montese in Spring Mills for lunch. Again, the vans will be available if needed. We are still in the planning stages for the fall Cass train ride. Be watching for more information. We look forward to a great turn out to the Marsh s home; it s always a good time. We thank you, Kirk and Jeannie, for hosting. Signing off for now, In October, some of the men here at First Baptist will be participating in a Men s Breakfast in Charles Town with former Washington Redskin coach & NASCAR owner, Joe Gibbs (see Pastor Josh for more details.) While entering books into the computer this month, I found that we have copies of his books. Joe Gibbs Fourth and One was written with Jerry Jenkins (who wrote with Tim LaHaye on the Left Behind series) in 1991 and is in biography form. His second book is titled, Game Plan For Life, it is also written with Jerry Jenkins and is more of a testimony for Christ and how God has been present with him. A third book is, Racing to Win, written with Ken Abraham. Just flipping through the book I found sub-headings like: God is Our Head Coach ; Our Coach Cares About Us ; and The Three-Part Puzzle of the Trinity. If you go to the breakfast, you will get a copy (Game Plan For Life) and you can get it autographed by Joe Gibbs that morning. If you cannot attend, the book is in the library ready for check-out! I ve never been a Redskins fan and pay very little attention to NASCAR, but for a very well-known sports figure to share Christ in such a clear and personal way is impressive. The hope of the breakfast is that Christian men will host a table of men who are unbelievers or saved, but out of God s will, so they can hear the Gospel of Christ that morning. The Table Coaches pay for their table of five so the guests come free to hear Joe Gibbs and hopefully be convicted to renew or begin a relationship with God through the blood of Jesus Christ. Pastor Josh has all the information! If you cannot go, please note the date and time in the bulletin and pray for conviction in the hearts of all who attend. Again, his books are in your church library for your enjoyment! Serving together, Sherry Campbell
