Chandler Ave. Evansville, IN Phone: (812) V.org #AngelsEV V PENTECOST AND LEAVING THE SAFE HARBOR On the fiftieth day after Easter, also the seventh Sunday after Easter, we celebrate Pentecost. The original Pentecost was quite an exceptional event which came after a series of fortune events. A man, Jesus the Christ, who claimed to be the Son of God not only died but rose from the dead. After his resurrection he would walk with his friends and followers, encouraging them to believe their own eyes. The Scripture had to be fulfilled, he said, which the Holy Spirit spoke before through the mouth of David (Acts 1:16). Many prophecies were fulfilled and the Jewish community in closest proximity found it tough to ignore. Jesus offered plentiful mysterious and trustworthy messages, and as time went on, those who stuck to Him came to understand and see every thing with the eyes of faith. What can we take away from the Pentecost event? As the story is told, Jesus ascended into heaven to be with His Father, but not without assuring the earliest Christians. He told them in Acts 1 that he would not be restoring the kingdom of Israel to their idea of what Israel might have been or should be. Far from it! Jesus told them, you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses, no kidding, to the ends of the earth. Therefore: We can be sure the witnesses Jesus spoke about do exist. Why? Well, because our faith depends on the faith and the witness of others who came before us. We can see by our very parish that Christ made disciples and the Holy Spirit sends us forth, rich in God s gifts, His charisms, and His graces. Like ships, the disciples and all who came to believe, left the safe, familiar harbor in order to bring the disarming presence of God to the whole world. Ships are made to sail, to leave the harbor. If we don t see what or who God is giving us now, if we do not see what we were given at Baptism and/or Confirmation, if we are not encouraging others in their mission, let us begin again today in love with Christ Jesus. Let us ask to see in our prayer, when with our friends, while we go about our daily business, the Lord who makes all things new speaks to us there. The Tuesday evening Mass at Holy Spirit is cancelled due to 8th Grade graduation at Christ the King at 6 p.m. The Wednesday evening Mass at Holy Spirit will be 8th Grade graduation. Starting Wednesday, May 23, all weekday morning Masses will be at Christ the King at 7:45 a.m. for the summer. After May 23, we will need adult volunteers to water it, one person/family per day, for the summer weeks. If you can take a day, Wednesday Sunday, please call the Parish Office to volunteer. BUS TRIP-SAVE THE DATE-AUGUST 11 The Men s Ministry is having a bus trip to St. Meinrad Abbey and the Benedictine Convent in Ferdinand on August 11 and will be from 8 am until 8 pm. There will be tours at each of the destinations. We will be having lunch in Jasper and dinner at the Brewery in Ferdinand. Cost is approximately $50 per person. Final details will be announced in June. CTK LAUNDRY VOLUNTEER NEEDED We are in need of people willing to do laundry a month or two at a time for Christ the King. The work includes: purificators and hand towels washed and ironed twice a month (more often if there are any extra holiday masses or funerals). The laundry does include altar linens and server robes. Those are much less frequent. Steaming on occasion is good enough for most decorative altar cloths unless they are soiled with wine. Server robes are done (as a whole) two to three times a year although cleaning one or two occasionally if they look stained around the neck might be necessary. ANNUNCIATION PRESCHOOL/PRE-K ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS Attention Gabriel Garden and Learning Tree Pre-K students. For the first time, low-income families in Vanderburgh County will have access to a highquality prekindergarten education for their 4-year-old children, AT NO CHARGE, thanks to the On My Way Pre-K program! Applications are now available for families whose children will be 4 years old by August 1, 2018, and starting kindergarten in the 2019/2020 school year. Space is limited, so families should apply soon at STATE CHAMPS! The Indiana Academic Super Bowl competition was held on Saturday, April 28. Annunciation at Christ the King's English team placed first at the area competition, and they were also named state champions in their division. BLESSING OF THE GARDEN On May 10th after the all school Mass, everyone gathered in the Holy Spirit Community Garden for a special blessing. Fr. Alex with Fr.
