The weekend of September we will have a tent set up in the narthex at St. Bernadette to kickoff the six week ministry fair. The booth is dedicated to protecting life...abortion, capital punishment etc. We will also have the WATER WITH BLESSINGS filter on display, as it is saving lives everyday. We will need help from the Knights after each Mass that weekend. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE will start on Sept. 26 and the Knights of Bishop Flaget Council have signed up again this year to pray in front of the abortion clinic at 2nd and Market each Tuesday morning from 10 to11:00 AM. Please join us for this peaceful hour of prayer as we express UNITY in our stand against the evils of abortion. Larry Kessler,
2 PAGE 2 VOLUME 18, ISSUE 10 Grand Knight s Letter Faith in Action - Faith, Family, Community and Life. Let s remember our theme for this year and that we are called to action in our churches through our Faith, Family, Community and Life. Faith: remember to attend mass and other church events like the St Bernadette Bash and weekly mass if not daily. Hitting a morning mass weekly sure would not hurt any of us and besides it would be a good way to start or continue our week. Many Knights already attend the weekday masses at all our parishes so consider helping with your growth in our faith. Family: much like the Holy Family our family units consist of not only your immediate family but your family of friends and community. Extend your families and support those who have lost a loved one, have someone in need due to illness or loss of a job but remember to help support our extended families. Remember to sell or purchase your Kentucky Cup tickets that support families at Gilda s Club and children like Dawson who attended our last meeting. Remember to purchase our allotment of NFL tickets that support charities in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Remember to help beginning next month with the Tootsie Roll collections that we do at retail locations to support those mentally and developmentally challenged. Community: not only our church community but the entire community in which we live and support. Remember the widows and widowers who in our community need our support through actions that help and heal them as they too are suffering the lost of a loved one that leaves a hole that can never be filled. Remember to participate in community events like the parish ministry fairs that will be happening at St Bernadette this month. Here is your time as a Knight to find what other calling, in addition to the Knights is God calling you to do, whether it be the choir, welcome ministry or bereavement. Get involved in your and our communities. Attend the St Bernadette Bash to support our church community. Be the difference and do just one more thing. Life: Don t just recognize that Life needs us to pray for the unborn or for those considering ending a pregnancy but be involved to help with Life like the mission of the Little Way Pregnancy center or Water with Blessings that supports clean water for those who need it the most. Children are dying in Haiti and around the word of illnesses from unclean water so help them through your donations. Attend the Tuesday prayer groups that pray downtown that women will support life and to have their baby s. Support those who have chosen life by donating diapers to the Diaper Bank. So supporting life is not just pre birth but post birth as well. The Act part is the hard part, be involved and step us as Knights of Columbus and say what can I do to support to advance these great causes we are involved in. See you all at our next meeting and remember those Silent Knights who cannot attend our meeting, pray for them as they seek their calls to action too. Together we call accomplish more.just ACT. David Such, GK.
3 VOLUME 18, ISSUE 10 Bishop Flaget Flyer The Pitfalls of Replacing Coverage PAGE 3 You know the old saying, the grass seems greener on the other side of the fence, but we all know that it rarely is. The same holds true when it comes to replacing your existing Knights of Columbus life insurance with coverage offered by another company. Perceptions are deceiving. A move to the greener grass on the other side of the fence might seem like a good one, but it can leave you with less green in your wallet in some cases, a lot less. That s why it pays to remember another old adage, Read the fine print. There are many reasons to keep your existing coverage in force, whether that coverage is with the Knights of Columbus or with another company. I ll focus on the potential pitfalls of replacing coverage here pitfalls that an agent trying to convince you that the grass actually is greener might neglect to mention. First, all life insurance contracts contain a contestability period, which allows the insurer to contest claims made for a period typically two years after the contract is issued. Chances are this is no longer an issue with your current coverage. Second, it s unlikely that you can obtain the same amount of coverage, for the same premium, that you were able to obtain with your existing contract. The two factors that determine how much you ll need to pay for life insurance coverage are age and health. Certainly, you re older now than you were when you took out your current coverage. There s no way around that. And you have to ask yourself, has your health changed during that time? Is your blood pressure the same? Your cholesterol? Have you gained weight? All these factors can affect the amount of coverage you ll get for your premium dollar. If someone encourages you to replace or worse, drop your existing coverage, please call me. I ll show you how your existing coverage is working for you and why replacement is rarely in your best interest. Dwight Frank, Field Agent Knights of Columbus Dwight.Frank@kofc.org
4 PAGE 4 Bishop Flaget Flyer VOLUME 18, ISSUE 10 FAITHFUL FRIAR As a person who has suffered lifetime hearing difficulties, Mark s account of Jesus healing is relevant. The man in the story has a speech impediment and is deaf. Jesus is asked to lay hands on him (a traditional form of healing) but instead Jesus takes me aside, puts his finger into the man s ears and spitting, touched his tongue. Then he looked up to heaven and groaned Ephphatha! or Be Opened! With that, the man s ears were opened, and his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. Talk about immediate results! Often as I offer pastoral care, most particularly the Sacrament of the Sick, I advise the recipient and the surrounding witnesses that the healing is immediate. It is! The sacrament uses the traditional form of healing (laying on of hands) and adds the Oil of the Sick (a sacramental oil blessed annually the Archbishop) to the forehead and hands of the recipient. I am almost always relieved when I think of it that I don t have to spit or put my finger in someone s ears. To the naked eye, nothing essentially changes. The person looks the same as they did before the anointing. In a great number of cases, nothing sense perceivable takes place. Vital signs remain the same. Sometimes, particularly when the recipient is unconscious, there is no discernable reaction. In a small number of cases, something happens such as eyes opening, or an audible sound. This is always surprising, and a gift when it does happen. How is this healing immediate? When the recipient is touched by the priest (who is acting in the person of Jesus Christ) it is Jesus, not the priest, who is making the intimate contact. This, by the way, is the same in all seven of the sacraments. For believers, this tangible experience of the Lord himself, raised from the dead, reminds us that God is never absent and, in fact, intimately present. Or to say it exactly the way Jesus said it, Ephphatha! Father Gary Padgett, Faithful Friar, Bouchet Assembly NFL SWEEPSTAKES TICKETS The tickets are available for $10. If you buy 2 you can get a free one. The proceeds go to The Knights of Columbus Charities of Kentucky, Inc. It is a non-profit corporation and a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization. It was formed in the early 1990 s to promote charitable and educational pursuits, to render mutual aid and assistance to those in need and to support and cooperate with all fraternal, charitable and civic enterprises rendering monetary aid. The membership of this corporation is composed solely of the active membership in good standing of all Kentucky subordinate councils and the Kentucky State Council. All net proceeds from any fundraiser must be distributed to recognized entities and needy individuals based on grant requests received and voted on by the Board of Directors. The Corporation is financially sound with its funds coming primarily from a Sweepstakes fundraiser supported by the jurisdiction s subordinate councils. The officers and directors are continually looking at new ways to increase annual income to fund the many charitable requests that it receives. We need our subordinate councils to continue to keep our Charities Corporation serving those in need by continuing their support of our annual fundraisers. Deadline Deadline for submissions for submissions for the for November the May newsletter is is April October 2, , 2018
