1 TEMPLE BETH TIKVAH HIGH HOLY DAYS 5779 AS WE GET READY TO WELCOME A NEW YEAR Fountain of life, as we begin a new year, let Your light and Your truth come forth to lead us. We look back upon the days that are past and see troubled times and days of celebration. Now we look ahead with the prayer that the new year be one of health and prosperity. When pains and troubles beset us, may we find strength to face them with outrage; and when times are good for us, may we have the wisdom to be grateful for our blessings. Amen. Baruch ata adonai eloheinu melech ha olam, Shehecheyanu v ki-y manu v higi anu lazman hazeh. Our praise to You, Eternal our God, Sovereign of all, For giving us life, sustaining us, and enabling us to reach this season. The Jewish New Year begins with the Ten Days of Awe. The whole spirit of the time between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is one of seriousness and solemnity. We hope that the following information will help your preparation for a New Year full of meaning.

2 YOU CAN T BUY THE HIGH HOLY DAYS AT TBT JUST COME! Everyone is invited to celebrate the High Holy Days as part of the TBT community. Those who are already part of the congregation who have completed all financial commitments from previous years and have paid the first quarter of this year s philanthropic commitment will receive security credentials in the mail during the first week of September. If you would like to be a guest at our High Holy Day services, we welcome you and ask that you call the TBT office (714/ ) or us (info@tbtoc.org) so that we can send your security credentials prior to services. Temple Beth Tikvah believes that finances should never be a barrier to being part of our TBT family or to High Holy Day services. So, we have no set membership fee or ticket price. We ask only that you consider a contribution of your choice to support these High Holy Day services and our synagogue's many other social, educational, and religious programs. See our Philanthropic Commitment Form for suggestions. We would love to have you join our TBT community. Therefore, rather than approaching the services as an outsider, we encourage you to consider your donation as your philanthropic contribution towards becoming part of the TBT family. We ask each family for a $400/year facility fee and beyond that, whatever you can add becomes your philanthropic contribution. Pledging at the Supporter level helps to ensure that TBT continues to thrive. Students and military are welcome at no charge. Those under 18 years of age should be accompanied by an adult having credentials. Those over 18 are asked to show their student/military ID. Security credentials (in the form of a name tag) should be worn at all times while at High Holy Day services. There is no need to share your tag with another family member we are happy to welcome all who wish to join us. Parking: We ask that you park on Acacia Avenue or one of the surrounding streets if you do not have a blue handicap parking pass. That way we can show loving kindness to those who finding walking a challenge. Those with blue handicap parking permits will be able to park on our lower parking lot. Of course you may enter the upper parking lot to drop off your loved ones, and then proceed to park your car. We encourage everyone to carpool! THE MACHZOR (HIGH HOLY DAY PRAYER BOOK) Mishkan HaNefesh We will be using the official machzor of the Reform movement, Mishkan HaNefesh, being introduced to our congregation his year. The machzor can be purchased by calling the TBT office ($45.00 each). You will be able to either pick up your machzor at the TBT office, or as you arrive for High Holy Day services. Although we will have some copies available at the service, we encourage you to purchase copies for your own family s use. If borrowing a book, please be sure to have a credit card on file with the office. As an alternative, you may leave a $45.00 deposit, or your current driver s license, which you may retrieve when you return your prayer book at the end of the service. If you would like to donate a machzor in honor or in memory of a loved one, we will place a book plate in the front of your donated book.

3 PARKING YOUR VEHICLE WE MAKE IT EASY We are excited that all of our High Holy Day services will be at TBT. We understand that you may be concerned about a shortage of parking spaces. Don t worry there is plenty of parking for all! Disabilities: Those having blue disability placards and requiring assistance are welcome to park in the lower TBT parking lot.. As you arrive at the top of Acacia Avenue, turn into the first driveway and show your placard and credentials (name tag) to security. You will be directed to a parking space. Working staff and working lay leaders: As you reach the top of Acacia Avenue, turn in at the second driveway and check in with security for directions to a parking spot in the upper lot. If you are able, please park on Acacia Avenue to allow for extra parking spots for our guests. All other Members and Guests are asked to park on Acacia Avenue. Approximately 50 parking spaces are available on North Acacia Avenue just north of TBT. Park and walk to TBT. Please carpool! S LICHOT Are You Ready for a New Year? Slichot will be observed this year on Saturday, September 1 st. We will have family programming starting at 5:30 p.m. There will be a catered dinner following at 6:30 p.m. (reservation required). At 7:30 p.m., we will have Havdalah, followed by learning opportunities at 8:00 p.m. (see flyer enclosed). Our traditional Ice Cream Social sponsored by the Men's Club will follow. The evening will conclude with the S lichot service, consisting of special prayers asking for forgiveness plus the changing of our Torah mantles from their blue covers to the white. THE TASHLICH CEREMONY During the High Holy Day period, Jews traditionally congregate at the edge of a body of running water and recite the last verses of the Book of Micah, concluding with the sentence, "And they will cast all their inequities into the depths of the sea." By tradition, the seashore, a river or flowing brook, or even a well of spring water may serve the purpose. The rabbis also require that the water should have fish to remind us that we, like the fish when caught in the net, are weak, helpless and are subject to the many ills that beset us in life. After the lines from Micah, some more recently composed prayers are recited. It is customary to shake the 'skirts' on one's garments over the body of water, as if physically transferring the sins into the river so that they may be carried away and not be remembered. The ceremony of Tashlich is purely symbolic in its origin and is observed mainly by Ashkenazi Jews. Tashlich denotes an action emphasizing the yearning to be cleared Tri-City Park of sin and the hope that one may be forgiven. We will observe the Tashlich ceremony on Saturday, September 15 th at 4:00 p.m. at the south side of the lake at Tri-City Park. Tri-City Park is located on the west side of Kraemer between Imperial and Bastanchury. Please come and join us for a short service, songs and the customary "casting" of the bread upon the water. Children will be given bubbles as they symbolically blow away their wrongdoings from the past year. Please do not bring bread with you. We will provide bread crumbs so as to not overfeed the ducks.

4 RECIPROCITY Temple Beth Tikvah participates with other synagogues throughout North America in a reciprocity program. You can attend services at another synagogue if you request a letter of membership from our congregation. Out-of-town guests may attend our services just let us know their names so that we can prepare their security credentials. SHOFAR BLOWING We invite anyone who would like to blow the shofar to participate in our shofar choir on Rosh Hashanah. If you would like to blow the shofar during the High Holy Days, please call the Temple office to inform us of your interest. HIGH HOLY DAY CHILD CARE We are happy to offer child care for children ages 2-5. Those in kindergarten and older will be eligible to participate in our youth programs, which will run throughout the mornings of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. If you are interested in taking advantage of child care, please call the TBT office by August 24 so that we can determine if child care can be provided. TOT & YOUTH PROGRAMS Services for children ages 2-5 will take place on both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur mornings at TBT at 11:00 a.m.. Parents should attend with their children. We encourage all ECLC parents to bring their children to the Tot services; please call the Temple office if you are not a TBT member but would like to attend so that we can prepare security credentials for you and your family. There will be youth services during the day services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Following the junior congregation service, children will be brought into the sanctuary to join their parents. It is important to emphasize that we cannot have children wandering around the facility unsupervised. If your children are not in the youth service, then they must be with you at all times. Please leave children s cell phones at home. A light snack is served to children on both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur mornings. If your child has special dietary needs, please provide your own child s snack. MEMORIAL BOOK One of the beautiful traditions of the Jewish people during the High Holy Days is the remembrance of beloved relatives and friends. During the Yom Kippur Yizkor service, we distribute a booklet listing the names of our dear departed. Members of the congregation may submit names to be included in this specially printed Memorial book. These remembrances should be received in the Temple office no later than August 27 th. If you would like to make a donation in memory of departed loved ones, you may enclose your donation when you return the form to the office.
