2 PROGRAMS FOR EIGHTH AND NINTH RS AT TEMPLE SINAI For our post-b nei Mitzvah students Temple Sinai offers two informal educational teen programs that take students out of the classroom and into the community for unique learning experiences: the eighth grade Teen Foundation and ninth grade Netivot/Pathways program. Run directly by Rabbi Millstein and Temple Sinai s new Rabbi-Educator, Rabbi Beth Kramer-Mazer, these ground-breaking, high impact programs have proven to be very engaging for teens, tapping into their desire to make a difference in the world, experience new things, all while hanging out and having fun. For the past several years the majority of students who become bar/bat mitzvah at Temple Sinai have chosen to participate in them instead of dropping out of Temple! The Teen Foundation and Netivot/Pathways programs are NOT Religious School classes. There is no Hebrew High or other classes for students in eighth and ninth grade. Registration for the Teen Foundation and Netivot/Pathways program is handled separately through Sally Collins in Rabbi Millstein s office. Those with students in eighth and ninth grades will receive a separate with more detailed information and registration materials later in the summer. These programs begin in October after the High Holidays. EIGHTH TEEN FOUNDATION Combining elements of teen philanthropy, community service and leadership development, this cutting edge youth program was pioneered six years ago at Temple Sinai as a way to engage our 8th graders in doing important mitzvah work while having fun hanging out together. The Teen Foundation teaches about tzedakah (charity), gemilut chasadim (deeds of kindness) and tikkun olam (repairing the world) through site visits to local not-for-profit organizations doing great work in our community. The students learn about the needs of others in the community who may not have what they do. They learn what our local not-for-profit organizations (both Jewish and secular) do to help those in need. They gain experience volunteering at these organizations and decide to whom they would like to make grants from their Teen Foundation at the end of the year. The Teen Foundation typically meets twice a month, from October through May, on Sunday afternoons from 5 6:15 p.m. and Fridays after school, from 4:00 5:30 p.m., with occasional special mitzvah opportunities taking place at other times. Requested tax-deductible donation: $ This money goes to the Teen Foundation to be distributed by the students as grants to local not-for-profit groups at the end of the year. The Temple does not charge a registration fee for this program. NINTH NETIVOT/PATHWAYS PROGRAM AND CONFIRMATION As students begin high school they meet many challenges. We are all well aware of the academic challenges. However, for a young person the challenge of developing one s personal identity of determining what is important in life and who one wants to be may be far more significant. Understanding where one s Jewish background, community and faith fit into one s overall identity is a critical aspect of one s personal development. The primary goal of the Netivot/Pathways program is to expose our students to various pathways for developing their adult Jewish identities. We seek to help them grapple with developing their own approach to being a Jew, one that can sustain them into adulthood. From October through March, students will engage in an activity with us approximately 3 times each month in the following format: One Sunday a month, the entire group will meet together for a discussion on a topic related to teens and identity. Once a month each student will participate with the group in a volunteer program at Brightview Assisted Living in Tenafly on Friday afternoon. (Students can apply for community service credit from their high school for this work.) Once a month, we will take the students on a trip or activity where they can experience something that will help them develop an aspect of their Jewish identities. Those students who participate consistently in our ninth grade Netivot/Pathways from October through March will be eligible to be confirmed at Temple Sinai at a service that takes place on the Festival of Shavuot, Sunday morning June 9, Students who participate in confirmation will meet weekly on Tuesday evenings in April and May to prepare for this special service. Registration fee: $ This fee goes to offset the cost of the numerous trips, food and special programs
