1 1 of 5 10/12/ :31 AM Sukkot Guide The haftorah for the first day of Sukkot on Thursday brings the familiar words of Zechariah "Then the Lord shall be King over all the earth: on that day the Lord shall be One and God's name One.(Zech. 14:9)" Hazzan Saul Wachs brought an inspiring teaching to our community last week about the radical juxtaposition between the prophetic context of this verse (warfare and impending doom), and the way the rabbis eternalize this verse in concluding our Aleynu prayer. In their re-working, the rabbis establish a dream of tikkun ha'olam (a repaired world) wherein wickedness is no more and people prove capable of using their God-given capacity to change and to grow. Aleynu's message is not about vanquishing God's enemies as in our haftorah. Rather, it is about how we pray three times each day (with Aleynu, evening, morning, and afternoon) for the faith that transformation and redemption are possible. So often, changing words around a text can grant it a fresh context. Our sages believed that our words can change worlds. Enjoy this touching illustration of that point. So may we begin the New Year 5772 with our words shared with each other this Sukkot. It is customary to set aside a partly roasted egg and piece of bread to remain uneaten until Shabbat, reciting the blessing asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu al mitzvat eruv. Light festival candles at home with two blessings (l'hadlik ner shel yom tov and shehechiyanu) no later than 5:51 pm.

3 3 of 5 10/12/ :31 AM It is customary to light a long-burning or yartzeit candle as well (without a blessing) so fire will be available to transfer for lighting candles on Thursday (6:49 pm) and Friday (no later than 5:47 pm) evenings or for cooking during the holiday. Kiddush for festivals should be made in the Sukkah followed by the additional blessings asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu leisheiv basukkah then shehechiyanu. We invite ushpizin, spiritual guests to sit alongside the people we have invited in. (See here for more.) We say hamotzi as usual, over two challot, and additional prayers are included in Birkat HaMazon. If it is raining, we eat indoors. All seven days of Sukkot, we make an effort to eat, drink, learn, and spend free time in the sukkah. Conceptually during this period, our homes become our temporary dwellings and our sukkot are our permanent dwellings. With the lulav cluster held in the right hand and the etrog in the left, the blessing al n'tilat lulav is said with etrog upside down (pitom, flower, facing down). Following the blessing, the etrog is turned right side up. The cluster is waved three times in each of the six directions: front, right, back, left, up, and down.
