2 Rabbi s Message Tekiah! The blast of the shofar announces that the new Jewish year has begun, calling us to introspection and repentance. The unique, reverberating sound of each individual blast calls us to examine a different aspect of our life. Tekiah is a long, steady blast. It is the blast of purpose, representing the moments of meaning, joy, and fulfillment in our lives. When we hear the tekiah sound, we reflect on our life goals. Are we living the life we want? Shevarim is three short, broken blasts. Shevarim, meaning broken, represents the brokenness in our lives. We regret moments of anger and harsh words, mourn tragedy and loss, and reflect on illness and missed opportunities. Teru ah is nine short, rapid blasts. The staccato notes quicken our heart rate. They represent the constant activity of our lives- the calendar full of dates and appointments, the long to-do list of errands and tasks. When we look at the pattern of blasts, we learn about our lives: Teki'ah Shevarim Teru'ah Teki ah;; Teki'ah Shevarim Teki'ah; Teki'ah Teru'ah Teki'ah Our lives will undoubtedly include the brokenness of shevarim. As humans we are always in need of repair. Our lives are also constantly in the motion of teru ah- we work, raise families, volunteer, take care of our homes and those we love. Yet we pray that the tekiah of purpose surrounds us always, supporting us in moments of brokenness and keeping us grounded in the day-to-day bustle. Then may we merit the promise in Psalm 89:16: Praised is the nation that understands the quavering sound of the shofar. Shana tova, may 5775 be a year of peace for us all, Rabbi Nicole Luna 2
3 President's Message Here come the High Holidays! I hope you are looking forward to the High Holidays as much as I am. Once again we are planning a highly participatory set of services. Among the myriad of tasks that go into our Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur observances, congregation members will be chanting, singing, speaking, blasting (shofars), slicing (apples), pouring (honey), furnishing (floral arrangements), greeting, and catering. Before we ve even begun the holidays themselves, my thanks goes out to everyone on the ritual practice committee, the membership committee, the programming committee, the chair of our house committee, the education committee, everyone who serves on the board, and of course Rabbi Luna for all the advanced planning of our services, our membership renewal, the beginning of our school year, and so much more. We are an active and vibrant community, which is particularly apparent during our High Holiday season. We invite numerous folks to perform an Aliyah during the High Holidays. For those of you who would like more information and an example of an Aliyah performed, please see our instructional video and cheat sheet on our website: Of course by now you have returned your membership renewal or new membership materials (if not, there s still time: get your paperwork and payments in as soon a possible). Our membership dues and the Yom Kippur Appeal pledges are how we keep the synagogue doors open. We operate as a lean non-profit organization; membership dues and appeal pledge donations are typically just enough to cover expenses; every membership and donation dollar counts. I hope 5775 is a year filled with joy for everyone in our community. Abbie Brown 3
4 Donations Honor a friend, relative, or congregant with a Simcha Contribution! Donations to Congregation Bayt Shalom are a wonderful way to recognize a simcha, honor or memorialize family or friends, or just to contribute to CBS. These contributions may be made at any level. Simcha recognition includes B nai Mitzvah, Births, Weddings, Anniversaries, Graduations, Birthdays, or any joyous occasion. Honoring can be for specific achievements or for long-term accomplishments. Remember a loved one s yahrzeit with a donation in his/her memory. The funds are used for the operation and programming of the synagogue, including religious education, building improvements, and helping those in need. August Donations In memory of Ruth Newfield - Miriam Russ In honor of Bat Mitzvah of Emma Dembo - Max and Svetlana Valdman and Family, Pete and Diane Stein and Family, and John and Rosalie Hutchens In honor of Bat Mitzvah of Hannah Steinberg - Pete and Diane Stein and Family In honor Katie Needell earning Girl Scout Gold Award - Pete and Diane Stein and Family In support of Congregation Bayt Shalom Drs. 5 Announcements Challahs for Rosh Hashanah This year, celebrate Rosh Hashanah with a fresh, delicious, homemade honey or raisin challah baked by members of CBS. Proceeds will benefit Congregation Bayt Shalom. Order by September 7. Pick up at CBS on September 21, 11 a.m.-noon. To order, please use the order form at the end of the Shofar. Silent Auction Bayt Shalom is looking for a few volunteers to organize and run a Silent Auction. The purpose of the Auction is to raise funds to balance the congregation's budget. Previous experience is not necessary. Desire to have fun and do something good is mandatory. All interested should contact Max Valdman at maksimv@gmail.com. Todah Rabah Todah rabah, thank you so much to Paula Blumenfeld and Joe Gantz for generously matching all donations from CBS members to Israel in the month of August. Their offer encouraged CBS to actively support Israel and raised much needed funds. The Jewish Federations of North America's Stop the Sirens fundraising campaign is ongoing as Israel continues to protect and defend her citizens: Introducing New Members Barbara & Tom Kane Barbara was born in Brooklyn, NY, and moved to Miami, FL, when she was 12. Tom spent his entire childhood in Atlanta, GA. They met at Florida State University as music majors while performing in an opera orchestra. They married during their senior year at FSU. Tom worked mostly as a computer programmer and Barbara was an economist and music teacher. Tom and Barbara moved to Tarboro, NC, in 2003, to finish up careers as music teachers and are now both retired. We wish to join CBS as we realized that there was a large spiritual gap in our lives. CBS is not only the closest temple, but also has a very warm, friendly, and welcoming membership. We have so much to learn and have found that Rabbi Luna and the other congregants want to help us along the way. Tom and Barbara on Pike s Peak! 5
6 Oneg Opportunities! I d like to say that the request for oneg volunteers has been extremely successful and all dates were filled right away. But that would be untrue. In point of fact, the oneg volunteer list is full of open opportunities. Please, go to the link and sign up for an oneg: Scroll down the web page to see the oneg calendar. Let s focus on filling September and October. Once those are filled, move on to November and December dates. Thank you! If you or a loved one is in the hospital and would like a visit, please let Rabbi Luna know (rabbi_luna@baytshalom.org, ).
