3 Simchat Torah Tuesday, October 6 9:00 am Shacharit Service with Hakafot 6:00 pm Fes<val Mincha 7:16 pm Havdalah Parallel High Holiday Kol Rinah ROSH HASHANAH DAY 1 WARM-UPS (8:30-9:10am) Option 1: Niggun and Neshamah for a New Year Rabbi Micah Buck-Yael and The Torah refers to Rosh Hashanah as Yom Zikhron Teruah/a remembrance of horn-blasting, which Rabbi Alan Lew, z l translates as the day of blowing the shofar to bring us to a state of mindfulness. Rabbi Micah Buck-Yael and Rabbi Tracy Nathan will guide us in using Jewish meditative techniques of melody, breath, and quiet presence, so we might bring ourselves into more-wakeful being as we begin our High Holy Day journey. No Hebrew knowledge, musical ability, or meditation experience needed. Join us to sing, listen, sit, and prepare to approach the New Year. Option 2: Why is This Yontif Different From All Other Yontifs? (or Therefore, Therefore, Therefore: Stages of Redemption in the High Holiday Amidah ) Rabbi Noah Arnow The Amidah on the Days of Awe contains three consecutive paragraphs, each of which begins Uv chen/therefore. What is special about these prayers, what do they mean, and how do they encapsulate the High Holidays and make them different from other holy days? We ll sharpen our minds, engage our spirits, and warm up our voices as we explore some words we ll say many (13+ times!) over the High Holidays. TORAH STUDY FOR ROSH HASHANAH DAY 1 (10:15-11am) Sarah and Hannah - A Cautionary Tale and a Model of Spiritual Practice Sarah and Hannah each long for a child and handle that yearning in very different ways. As we explore these texts, we will glean what they have to teach us about how we navigate our own deepest yearnings for ourselves and our world. MUSAF STUDY AND WORKSHOP ROSH HASHANAH DAY 1 (12:15-1pm) Revolutionary Prayer Rabbi Micah Buck-Yael
4 The most basic forms of Jewish prayer are based upon an act of civil disobedience, as told in the Haftarah we read today. Hannah, a childless woman struggling to survive in a male-dominated household and society, enters into the sanctuary space and addresses God directly out of the fullness of my anger and my pain. Her sacred words express her own personal pain and need, but also connect her own struggle within her family to the struggles of others around her. In the past year, our city has been at the center of our country s outpouring of pain and anger, and at the center of a nationwide movement to address the complexities of race, inequality, policing, and history. The Black Lives Matter movement has generated writings, poems, songs, and rituals that are revolutionary prayer in the same mold as Hannah s. We will encounter some of these writings, and explore what it means to be part of a community experiencing such pain and division. SHACHARIT STUDY FOR ROSH HASHANAH DAY 2 (9-9:45AM) Avinu Malkeinu (Our Father, Our King): Renewing our Metaphors Rabbi Noah Arnow Avinu Malkeinu is among the most familiar and common sets of metaphors for God, especially on Rosh Hashanah. These metaphors also raise questions about gender, power and hierarchy, among others. Together, we ll study these metaphors, these names of God, and consider their resonance as well as alternatives. We ll also think about how to pray this prayer meaningfully, with intention and focus. TORAH STUDY FOR ROSH HASHANAH DAY 2 (10-10:45AM) Will this be on the Final Exam? Rabbi Micah Buck-Yael The dramatic tale of the Binding of Isaac defies simple explanation. It is meant to leave us shaken, unsettled, and unsure. The Torah reports that this episode took place because God tested Abraham. But what was the test? And did Abraham pass? Some interpreters have identified this as a glorification of absolute unquestioning faith. Others read it as a condemnation of religious fanaticism, or a story of family trauma, or of identity-formation. All these meanings and more are carried in the text. We will examine some of the meanings given to this story, and their possibilities for our lives and communities on this day. MUSAF STUDY AND DISCUSSION ROSH HASHANAH DAY 2 (11:45AM-12:30PM) Spiritual Practice of Forgetting As a people, we Jews place a high value on memory. And yet, for all our emphasis on remembering, there is also a time and place for forgetting. Join in exploring texts from Torah and our Hassidic masters on the spiritual practice of forgetting in the service of teshuva and forgiveness.
