3 In response to last year s devastating Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, and earthquakes in Mexico, Catholics across the United States have contributed nearly $59 million to relief and recovery efforts. Initiated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), special collections and funds were launched last year to support humanitarian relief efforts as well as to provide pastoral services and financial support to rebuild facilities in dioceses impacted by these disasters. The devastation wrought by last year's unprecedented disasters continues to impact the lives of our brothers and sisters in the United States, across the Caribbean, and in Mexico. We are profoundly grateful to the dioceses that took up special collections or made donations, said Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi, chairman of the USCCB Committee on National Collections. The support of parishioners is an act of charity and a reflection of love for neighbor. We ask for continued prayers of support for the people affected by these historic natural disasters. As of mid-may 2018, US dioceses have remitted the following amounts for relief efforts: Hurricane Harvey: $37.2 Million; Hurricane Irma: $12.8 Million; Hurricane Maria: $6.1 Million; Mexico Earthquakes: $3.5 Million. Here at Christ the King Church, parishioners contributed just more than $16,000. Humanitarian relief and recovery efforts are being provided by Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) and Catholic Relief Services (CRS). CCUSA is receiving 50% of Hurricane Harvey funds and 30% of both Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria funds; CRS is receiving 20% of Hurricane Irma funds. Initial funding from the special collections supported immediate needs such as food, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. Long-term disaster recovery is currently underway. CCUSA recently distributed $13.5 million to nine Catholic Charities agencies in Texas and Louisiana where Hurricane Harvey affected countless people. In response to Hurricanes Irma and Maria, CRS worked with Caritas Havana in Cuba to provide roofing and mattresses to affected families. In the British Virgin Islands, CRS, Caritas Antilles and the British Red Cross set up a joint cash program to help 740 families buy essential items. In Dominica, CRS and Caritas Antilles distributed 750 hygiene kits, 1,590 tarps, 920 buckets and 660 water filters to more than 600 families in four communities in the hardest-hit southeastern region. In the Dominican Republic, CRS partners provided 1,970 families with vouchers for food, hygiene and living supplies, and 330 families with hygiene kits. Teams also worked with the local health ministry to raise awareness about health and hygiene, particularly the danger of waterborne diseases and other health risks. Two Mexico earthquakes days apart killed nearly 500 people in September 2017 and destroyed homes, infrastructure and utilities, CRS, Caritas Mexico and local partners constructed transitional shelters and distributed 2,859 tarps to vulnerable families. They set up communal cooking facilities to ensure daily hot meals and provided living supplies, including kitchen sets and locally made clay ovens. CRS and its partners also arranged counseling for 1,040 children and young people dealing with grief, distress and trauma from the earthquakes. Moving forward, CRS will train people to build back better using disaster-resilient construction techniques, and to maintain their shelters. In four communities, community-based disaster response teams are being trained in first aid. This outreach was done through CRS's direct fundraising efforts. Remembering those who have passed can sometimes bring up memories that are not so easy to remember. Pain and disappointment may accompany thoughts of what was or might have been. Talking with someone about those feelings can make them easier to bear and give comfort. A Stephen Minister will listen with compassion and a nonjudgmental ear. Call Carol Hartley at ( CTK_StephenMinistry@verizon.net), Larry Bartley at ( LJBJR@cox.net) or call the off ice at for more information. REFLECTION Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity In today s Gospel, we hear Jesus declare together all three Persons of the Trinity. Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. When we speak of the Trinity, two different theological words are sometimes used: immanent and economic. The immanent Trinity is the life of the three Persons within themselves, the inner harmonious relationship between Father, Son, and Spirit. The term economic has its roots in the Greek word oikonomia, roughly meaning household management. The economic Trinity is our three-personed God s relationship with creation; it is creation and redemption and ongoing relationship with us. Made in the image and likeness of God, we are called to imitate God s immanence by giving and receiving love with one another in community. We also imitate the economy of God when we go out, when we extend our love and care in a life-giving way. Go therefore? Every believer is sent on mission. Every believer is invited to follow Jesus and the Apostles to the nations, to the margins, to the people who require a little extra reach. This could be a distant relative, the residents of your local homeless shelter or even the forgotten neighbor next door! When we love well, we create something beautiful-a relationship, a holy moment, a foretaste of heaven. This Trinity Sunday, take some time to examine the relationships in your life. How well do you love those nearest to you? How well do you reach out to those farther away? How are you creating something beautiful?

5 Quotes of the Week That you are gay doesn t matter. God made you like this and loves you like this and it doesn t matter to me. The pope loves you like this. You have to be happy with who you are. Pope Francis, in a conversation at the Vatican last month with Juan Carlos Cruz, a survivor of Chilean clergy sexual abuse, as reported by Cruz during an interview with the Spanish daily El Pais, published last week. Speaking about the Chilean bishops all 34 of whom have since offered their resignation to the Pope Cruz stated: They had basically told [Francis] that I was a pervert They had told him that I didn t believe, that I was an enemy of the Church. I told him that it enraged me, because I continue to believe, loving the Church, thinking that this can change. I explained that I may not be the reincarnation of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, but I m not a bad person, I try not to hurt anyone. Gonzaga was an Italian aristocrat who became a member of the Society of Jesus, the same religious community as Francis.) ************************************************* Jesus would have said that. Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, when asked for his reaction to Francis s words to Juan Carlos Cruz. Dolan added, What [Francis] says is beautiful. ************************************************** The world s 7.6 billion people represent just 0.01% of all living things. Yet since the dawn of civilization, humanity has caused the loss of 83% of all wild mammals and half of plants. From an article in The Guardian (May 21) summarizing a new study, The biomass distribution on Earth, published last week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. LECTURE Michael Pakaluk, author, Professor of Ethics, contributor to the Boston Pilot, member of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas, will be speaking at St. Pius V church, Eaton St. Providence, on Wednesday, June 6 at 7pm. His topic will be The Appalling Strangeness of the Mercy of God. Suggested donation $ For more information call Congratulations to the URI Class of 2018! Last Sunday s commencement, the 132nd at the University of Rhode Island, marked the graduation of more than 3,800 students! Special congratulations to those graduates who were part of our Catholic Center community. They will be greatly missed! Know that the Catholic Center at URI will always be a home away from home for you! It s hard to believe that another academic year has come and gone. Now we ll begin our regular maintenance schedule at the Catholic Center. I wanted you to be aware of a few things: The Catholic Center will operate on a modified schedule, which means that it will be closed on weekends. Due to regular maintenance, the building may not be accessible, even during the week. The 8pm Mass has concluded until the Fall. Next year will see a return to the custom of suspending the 8pm Mass when URI is not in session. If you frequent the 8pm, please be certain to check out the schedule which has been posted at our website. Visit: rhodycatholic.com/sunday-8pm-mass-schedule/ Mass on Memorial Day will be held at 9am in the Catholic Center chapel. The 12pm daily Mass moves to the church on Monday, June 4, and will remain there through the months of June, July and August. There will be no public services or liturgies in the Catholic Center chapel throughout those months. Lastly, a word of special thanks to Fr. Jared, the parish staff and all of you for the support and encouragement the Catholic Center has received throughout this past year. I look forward to updating you on all that we have planned for next year as the end of the summer approaches. Until then, be assured of my gratitude! -Fr. Joe
