Freer (FrDoug@StPioParish.com) Silverius Galvan, Deacon (deaconsil@comcast.net) John Paglione, Coordinator of Education and Liturgy (pags711@aol.com) Marta Barkhausen Business Manager (Marta@StPioParish.com) Ginny Mielnicki, Parish Secretary Rectory Office Hours: Monday through Friday 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM Weekend Celebrants: Fr. Paul Engel, O.F.M. Fr. Kevin P. Ashe Masses: Saturday: 5:15 pm Sunday: 8:00 am, 9:15 am, 11:30 am Confessions: Saturday 4:30 to 5:00 PM Marriages: This great sacrament of vocation is a joyous time, but also a time of very serious spiritual preparation. The responsibility assumed by the couple and the Church is significant. While many focus on the day of the wedding, we seek to prepare for the second day and beyond. The Bishops of NJ have adopted a policy to assist in this preparation. Attendance at Engaged Encounter, Pre-Cana, or another approved marriage prep program, and individual sessions with a priest or deacon are required of all couples. Couples should contact the Rectory one year in advance of the intended marriage, and before finalizing other detail particularly reception facilities. Baptisms: The Church shares the joy of families in the birth of children, and, with their parents takes seriously the responsibility of bringing them up in the faith. Parents seeking baptism for their children are to attend Baptismal Prep Class. This can be arranged by calling the parish office. Parents should be registered members of the parish. Godparents, those who represent the church in the life of the child, must be practicing Catholics, if they are married, they must have been married in the Church, practice the faith regularly, and must obtain a sponsor certificate from their home parish. Please choose Godparents with these criteria in mind. Anointing of the Sick: This sacrament is given for those facing serious illness or surgery, and for those of advanced years. If you or a family member is planning to enter the hospital, please see one of the priests following Mass or call the rectory if you would like to receive this sacrament. Funerals: Please call the Rectory.

3 From Father Doug: Hope and excitement enfold around us as Christmas draws near. Advent offers a time of quiet, in contrast to the clamor and celebration, if even a bit of stress, that accompanies the final days toward the one day when almost everyone remembers the birth of a child many years ago. It is a tremendous opportunity for believing Christians to tell people what this child means to them. It is our invitation to take an open mic if you will, a time when it is almost politically correct to speak openly about Jesus. Even the most hardened secularist might say, Oh, let them talk about Jesus, after all, it s Christmas. Acts of generosity large and small remind us of the greatest act of generosity, God s gift to us of himself. Advent does offer hope. Hope that God still speaks to us in the Christmas story. It offers hope that God still cares for and loves each of us more deeply than we can ever know. It reminds us that God longs to open our blind eyes to see that there is goodness around us. It challenges us to open our ears to hear the call of the angels proclaiming the birth, the praise of the shepherds, and the musings of the Kings who came to find answers to all their questions. Advent challenges us to look for what is good in the world, signs that Christ is drawing near even now. When we look to the future, as bleak as the world might try to pain that picture, it is a beautiful picture, for we wait not for the end of what we know, but the fulfillment of what we don t know, when God will be all in all. Advent offers us hope to confess our sin and to receive the grace of absolution, to profess our faith and to receive a deepening of our awareness of God with us, and to celebrate with joy the coming of God in the flesh at Bethlehem. It is a very exciting time to look ahead to God s triumph, to look back to the gift of Bethlehem, and to look around at the joy that this birth brings even to those who forget what they are celebrating. May these days of approach to the manger bring you hope, joy and eager expectation to greet again the wonders of Christ s most sacred birth. Prayer to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception O most Holy Virgin, Immaculate in body and spirit, look kindly on me as I Implore your powerful intercession. O most Holy Mother, receive my prayers as I present them to God (state you intentions) O Mary, Mother of Jesus and our Mother you intercede for us with your Son. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you. Amen Holy Day of Obligation Friday, Dec. 7th Vigil Mass 5:15 PM ~ Saturday, Dec. 8th 8:30 AM ANNUAL FRIENDSHIP DINNER JANUARY 1ST 1:00 PM 4:00 PM Parish Hall If you can donate a cooked Turkey Breast/Spiral Ham or can volunteer time or monetary donation it is greatly appreciated. 5 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 2ND, 2018 THE PROMISE OF JUSTICE We are in fairly good company when we ask God for justice. Often enough we hear and agree with the lament of the people of Israel asking God why the wicked prosper. However, when we call out for justice, we usually want someone to get his or her comeuppance. God s justice is something other than this, of course. God s justice comprises a wonderful rightness between God and humankind. Today, Jeremiah looks ahead to a time when a just one will sprout from the shorn-off stump of Jesse of the house and family of David. Life was not fair in Jeremiah s time. Israel s kings held the promise of God s fidelity, but it was difficult to see how God s promise could be realized through them. Nevertheless, Jeremiah lifts his voice and announces that the Promised One will come. Luke s Gospel echoes that announcement, and Paul is filled with sturdy encouragement. And so Advent begins with a promise. THE THREE COMINGS OF ADVENT There are three distinct comings of the Lord of which I know: His coming to humankind, His coming into humankind, and His coming against humankind. St. Bernard: Third Sermon for Advent TODAY S READINGS First Reading The days are coming when the L will fulfill the promise made to Israel and Judah (Jeremiah 33:14-16). Psalm To you, O Lord, I lift my soul (Psalm 25). Second Reading Abound in love for one another and for all (1 Thessalonians 3:12 4:2). Gospel Stand erect and raise your heads; your redemption is at hand (Luke 21:25-28, 34-36). SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: First Sunday of Advent; Hanukkah begins Monday: St. Francis Xavier Tuesday: St. John Damascene Thursday: St. Nicholas Friday: St. Ambrose; First Friday Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day Saturday: The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
