2 Welcome to worship at Christ Church Cathedral For hearing assistance, headsets are available. Please see a Greeter at the entrance to the Church. The service of Advent Lessons & Carols in Procession is a particularly Anglican rite. Using liturgical material developed over a period of centuries, it moves from darkness to light, reflecting our journey toward the Nativity of our Lord. Throughout the Service, processions move in all directions of the compass, symbolizing the spreading of the light of Christ to every corner of the world. * Please observe silence in the Cathedral prior to the Service * ORGAN RECITAL BY MATTHEW LARKIN Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland Es ist ein Ros entsprungen J. Bach Johannes Brahms ADVENT LESSONS & CAROLS IN PROCESSION All stand as the procession appears Introit: Let all mortal flesh keep silence Edward Bairstow Hymn Come, thou Redeemer Puer nobis nascitur Please join in singing verses From God the Father he proceeds, To God the Father back he speeds; His course he runs to death and hell, Returning on God s throne to dwell. 6. O equal to thy Father, thou! Gird on thy fleshly mantle now; The weakness of our mortal state With deathless might invigorate.
3 7. Thy cradle here shall glitter bright, And darkness breathe a newer light, Where endless faith shall shine serene, And twilight never intervene. 8. All laud, eternal Son, to thee Whose Advent sets thy people free, Whom with the Father we adore And holy Ghost forevermore. A Bidding Prayer The Very Rev d Shane Parker Dean of Ottawa First Lesson Isaiah 6:1-8 The Rev d Canon Michael Fleming Canon of St.Andrew Carol Twas in the year that King Uzziah died Old Melody arr. A herald voice is sounding; Christ is nigh, it seems to say; Cast away the dreams of darkness, O ye children of the day! 2. Wakened by the solemn warning, let the earth-bound soul arise; Christ, her Son, all sloth dispelling, shines upon the morning skies. 3. Lo! The Lamb, so long expected, comes with pardon down from heaven; Let us all, with tears of sorrow, pray that we may be forgiven. 4. That when next he comes with glory, and the world is wrapped in fear, With his mercy he may shield us, and with words of love 5. Honour, glory, might, and blessing to the Father and the Son, With the Everlasting Spirit, while eternal ages run.

And lo, already on the hills the flags of dawn appear; Gird up your loins, ye prophet souls, proclaim the day is near: 4. The day in whose clear-shining light all wrong shall stand revealed, When justice shall be throned in might, and every hurt be healed; 5. 5 Carol The Record of John Orlando Gibbons Hymn On Jordan s bank Winchester New 1. On Jordan s bank, the Baptist s cry announces that the Lord is nigh; Awake and hearken, for he brings glad tidings of the King of kings. 2. Then cleansed be every breast from sin; make straight the way for God within; Prepare we in our hearts a home where such a mighty guest may come. 3. For thou art our Salvation, Lord, our Refuge, and our great Reward; Without thy grace we waste away like flowers that wither and decay. 4. To heal the sick stretch our thine hand, and bid the fallen sinner stand; Shine forth, and let thy light restore earth s own true loveliness. 5. All praise, Eternal Son, to thee whose Advent doth thy people free, Whom with the Father we adore and Holy Ghost for evermore. Seventh Lesson Matthew 1:18-23 The Rev d Canon Lydon McKeown Honorary Assistant, St. Stephen s Ottawa Carols Righteous Joseph English Carol, arr. Timothy Piper Tomorrow shall be my dancing day English Carol, arr. David Willcocks Offertory Lo! He comes with clouds Helmsley 1. Lo! He comes with clouds descending, once for favoured sinners slain; thousand thousand saints attending swell the triumph of his train. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Christ appears on earth to reign.
6 2. Every eye shall now behold him Robed in dreadful majesty; those who set a at nought and sold him, pierced and nailed him to the tree, deeply wailing, deeply wailing, deeply wailing, shall the true Messiah see. 3. Those dear tokens of his Passion still his dazzling body bears, cause of endless exultation to his ransomed worshippers: with what rapture, with what rapture, with what rapture gaze we on those glorious scars. 4. Yea, amen, let all adore thee, high on thine eternal throne; Saviour, take the power and glory, claim the kingdom for thine own: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Thou shalt reign, and thou alone. Advent Responsory Priest: My soul waits for the Lord; in his word is my hope. People: My soul waits for the Lord; in his word is my hope.
