Hope: The First Advent Candle Rdr. 1: Today is the first Sunday in Advent. Advent is a time of waiting and preparing to celebrate Jesus birth. It is also a time for us to work together for peace among the nations, and peace with each other. It is a time for us to walk in the light God gives us.

5 Rdr. 2: As part of our Advent waiting, we will light a candle in our Advent wreath to remind us of the hope this season brings. The round shape of the wreath reminds us of the unbroken love of God. The green branches speak of new life. The candles remind us of the light which came into the world with Jesus. Rdr. 1: Today, we light the first candle. The flickering flame reminds us that our hope is lived out in prayer and action. (Reader 2 lights the first candle) All: Dear God, through your Spirit, you spoke to the prophets of a vision of peace. You spoke to Mary and Joseph of a child who would bring new life to the world. Speak to

6 each of us this day, and fill us with Advent hope as we prepare to celebrate Jesus birth. Amen. There s a Song There s a song of hope in my heart Hope is a gift from Jesus, There s a song of hope in my heart, Hope is a gift from God Alleluia, Hope in my heart is singing praises, Alleluia, Hope is a gift from God. Greeting One The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. All And also with you.

7 The Opening Prayer One Almighty God, All to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. One Let us pray. We pray silently. One Almighty God, All give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility, that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious

8 majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. All Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long. One Remember, O Lord, your compassion and love, for they are from everlasting. Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions; remember me according to your love and for the sake of your goodness, O Lord. All Gracious and upright is the Lord; therefore he teaches sinners in his way.

10 One He guides the humble in doing right and teaches his way to the lowly. All All the paths of the Lord are love and faithfulness to those who keep his covenant and his testimonies. The Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13 (Fr) How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you. And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God

12 Homily Rev. Mark Whittall Open Space The Apostles Creed One Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say, All I trust in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I trust in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

13 I trust in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers of the People: Led by Iain Wallace Confession and Absolution One Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. Silence is kept. One Most merciful God,

14 All we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. One Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

Baptisms We will be having baptisms on Sunday, March 3, If you would like to be baptized, renew your baptismal vows or would like more information about baptism, please contact Rev. Mark.
