Welcome to St. George s Cathedral Anglican Diocese of Ontario The Rt. Rev. Michael Oulton, Bishop Advent Procession with Carols December 2, 2012

Welcome! The symbolism of this Ancient Service is that of moving from darkness to light, from the hope of the Old Testament to its fulfilment in the New. Christ s coming into the world has brought light to mankind. The service starts in darkness and as it unfolds the church is gradually filled with light. Enjoy your time of worship, reflection and singing! For Visitors and Newcomer Would you like to receive our weekly enewsletter? Give your address and name to a greeter with a red lanyard, or it in to the Cathedral Office at office@stgeorgescathedral.ca. (You may withdraw from our enewsletter at any time with no questions asked.) Members of the Cathedral Tour Guides will also be on hand to tell you about the history and architecture of the building. What else would you like to see in this section? Tell a greeter, and we ll try to include it for the next visitor! Lunch by George provides a warm, safe place to have a morning snack and a healthy lunch 5 days per week. They would love to talk to you about their activities and opportunities for volunteering. See their display at the back of the Cathedral. Interested in singing? Talk about the many options with choir members, parents from the children s choir, and Michael Capon, our music director. Questions about the Anglican Church? See the display of Everything you always wanted to know about the Anglican Church but had no-one to ask at the back of the church. 2

Advent Procession with Carols Presiders: Dean Mary Irwin-Gibson, Bishop Michael Oulton Welcome and Announcements Choir and Clergy enter Cathedral; please stand, as you are able Advent Responsory GP Palestrina I look from afar: and lo, I see the power of God coming, and a cloud covering the whole earth. Go ye out to meet him and say: Tell us, art thou he that should come to reign over thy people Israel? High and low, rich and poor, one with another, go ye out to meet him and say: Hear, O thou Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a sheep, tell us, art thou he that should come? Stir up thy strength, O Lord, and come to reign over thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Choir and clergy process in, to the Opening Hymn Opening Hymn: O Come, O Come Emmanuel (CP 89) O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appear. Refrain. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel. O come, O Wisdom from on high, Who orders all things mightily; To us the path of knowledge show, And teach us in her ways to go. Refrain. O come, O come, great Lord of might who to your tribes on Sinai s height In ancient times once gave the law, In cloud and majesty and awe. Refrain. O come, O Key of David, come, And open wide our heavenly home; Make safe the way that leads on high, And close the path to misery. Refrain. O come, O Dayspring on high And cheer us by your drawing nigh; Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, And death s dark shadows put to flight. Refrain. O come, Desire of nations, bind In one the hearts of all humankind; Bid our sad divisions cease, And be Thyself our King of Peace. Refrain

Bidding Prayer Presider Beloved in Christ, as we await the great festival of Christmas, let us prepare ourselves so that we may be shown its true meaning. Let us hear in lessons from Holy Scripture how the prophets of Israel foretold that God would visit and redeem his waiting people. Let us rejoice, in carols and hymns, that the good purpose of God is being mightily fulfilled. Let us celebrate the promise that our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, will bring all people and all things into the glory of God s eternal kingdom. The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the Gospel preached to them. But first, let us pray for the world which God so loves, for those who have not heard the good news of God, or who do not believe it, for those who walk in darkness and the shadow of death; and for the Church in this place and everywhere, that it may be freed from all evil and fear, and may in pure joy lift up the light of the love of God. All These prayers and praises let us humbly offer to God; and then let us join together in the words which Christ himself taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. First Reading: Jeremiah 23:5-8 The prophet proclaims God s promise of the coming of a Messiah for the Jews. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: The Lord is our righteousness.

Therefore, the days are surely coming, says the Lord, when it shall no longer be said, As the Lord lives who brought the people of Israel up out of the land of Egypt, but As the Lord lives who brought out and led the offspring of the house of Israel out of the land of the north and out of all the lands where had driven them. Then they shall live in their own land. Anthem: People look east. The time is near (traditional) Arr. Barry Ferguson People look East. The time is near of the crowning of the year. Make your house fair as you are able, trim the hearth and set the table. People look East, today: Love the Guest is on the way. Furrows, be glad. Though earth is bare, one more seed is planted there: give up your strength the seed to nourish, that in course the flower may flourish. People look East, today: Love the Rose is on the way. Stars, keep the watch. When night is dim one more light the bowl shall brim, shining beyond the frosty weather, bright as sun and moon together. People look East, today: Love the Star is on the way. Angels announce to man and beast him who cometh from the East. Set every peak and valley humming with the word, the Lord is coming. People look East, today: Love the Lord is on the way. Hymn: Your kingdom come! on bended knee (CP 116) Your kingdom come! on bended knee the passing ages pray; and faithful souls have yearned to see on earth that kingdom s day. But the slow watches of the night not less to God belong; and for the everlasting right the silent stars are strong. And lo, already on the hills the flags of dawn appear; gird up your loins, you prophet souls, proclaim the day is near: The day in whose clear shining light all wrong shall stand revealed, when justice shall be throned in might, and every heart be healed; When knowledge, hand in hand with peace, shall walk the earth abroad; the day of perfect righteousness, the promised day of God 5

Second Reading: Isaiah 40:1-8 The prophet proclaims good news to the Jews in exile. Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord s hand double for all her sins. A voice cries out: In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. A voice says, Cry out! And I said, What shall I cry? All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever. Anthem: The Yearning Craig Courtney There is a yearning in hearts weighed down by ancient grief and centuries of sorrow. There is a yearning in hearts that in the darkness hide and in the shades of death abide, a yearning for tomorrow. There is a yearning for the promised one, the firstborn of creation. There is a yearning for the Lord who visited his own, and by his death for sin atoned, to bring to us salvation. Emmanuel, within our hearts, the yearning. There is a yearning that fills the hearts of those who wait the day of his appearing. There is a yearning when all our sorrows are erased and we shall see the one who placed within our hearts the yearning.

Hymn: Herald! Sound the note of judgement (CP 111) Herald! Sound the note of judgement, Warning note of right and wrong, Turning us from sin and sadness, Till once more we sing the song. Sound the trumpet! Tell the message! Christ the Saviour King has come! Herald! Sound the note of gladness! Tell the news that Christ is here; Make a pathway through the desert For the one who brings God near. Sound the trumpet! Tell the message! Christ the Saviour King has come! Herald! Sound the note of pardon! Those repenting are forgiven; God restores the wayward children, And to all new life is given. Sound the trumpet! Tell the message! Christ the Saviour King has come! Herald! Sound the note of triumph! Christ has come to share our life, Bringing God s own love and power, Granting victory in our strife. Sound the trumpet! Tell the message! Christ the Saviour King has come! Third Reading: Zechariah 2:10-13 The prophet proclaims salvation for all nations. Sing and rejoice, O daughter Zion! For lo, I will come and dwell in your midst, says the Lord. Many nations shall join themselves to the Lord on that day, and shall be my people; and I will dwell in your midst. And you shall know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you. The Lord will inherit Judah as his portion in the holy land, and will again choose Jerusalem. Be silent, all people, before the Lord; for he has roused himself from his holy dwelling. Anthem by Children s Choir: Lo, he comes! John Horman Refrain: Lo, he comes! Sing we Hosanna! Lo, he comes, let us sing to the Lord! Enter his gates with shouts of thanksgiving, into his courts with songs of praise. Come, let us march in glad procession, loud Hosannas now we raise. Refrain. Open your heart and welcome the Saviour. Join with the song that has no end. This is the day for which we have waited; the coming of our Lord is surely at hand. Refrain.

Hymn: Break, day of God, O break (CP 99) Break, day of God, O break! The night has lingered long. Our hearts with sighing wake; We weep for sin and wrong: O bright and morning star, draw near; O Sun of Righteousness, appear. Break, day of God, O break! The earth with strife is worn; The hills with thunder shake; Hearts of the people mourn: Break day of God, sweet day of peace, And bid the shout of warriors cease. Break, day of God, O break, Like to the days above! Let purity awake, And faith and hope and love. But lo! We see the brightening sky; The golden morn is drawing nigh. Fourth Reading: Luke 1:26-35, 38 The angel Gabriel announces that Mary will give birth to the Messiah. In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, Greetings, favoured one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I am a virgin? The angel said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born of you will be holy; he will be called Son of God. Then Mary said, Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word. Then the angel departed from her.

Anthem: Dixit Maria Hans Leo Hassler Mary said to the angel: behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word. Hymn: On Jordan s bank the Baptist s cry (CP 103) On Jordan s bank the Baptist s cry announces that the Lord is nigh; awake and hearken, for he brings glad tidings of the King of kings. Then cleansed be every breast from sin; make straight the way for God within, prepare we in our hearts a home where such a mighty guest may come. To heal the sick stretch out thine hand, and bid the fallen sinner stand; shine forth, and let thy light restore earth s own true loveliness once more. All praise, eternal Son, to thee, whose advent doth thy people free; whom with the Father we adore and Holy Ghost for evermore. For thou art our salvation, Lord, our refuge and our great reward; without thy grace we waste away like flowers that wither and decay. Fifth Reading: Mark 1:1-8 John the Baptist announces that the Messiah is nigh. The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. 9

Offertory Anthem: How lovely are the messengers Felix Mendlessohn How lovely are the messengers that preach us the gospel of peace! To all the nations is gone forth the sound of their words, throughout all the lands their glad tidings. Offertory Hymn: Hark the glad sound the Saviour comes (CP 98) Hark the glad sound! The Saviour comes, The Saviour promised long; Let every heart prepare a throne, And every voice a song. Christ comes the prisoners to release, In Satan s bondage held; The gates of brass before Him burst, The iron fetters yield. Christ comes the broken heart to bind, The bleeding soul to cure, And from the treasuries of grace To bless the humble poor. Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace, Thy welcome shall proclaim; And heaven s eternal arches ring With thy belovèd name. Sixth Reading: Matthew 1:18-23 Matthew tells of the birth of the Saviour. Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means, God is with us.

Anthem: Zion Hears The Watchmen s Voices Arr. J.S. Bach Zion hears the watchmen s voices, with gladness all her heart rejoices, she eager wakes to greet the day. See, her Lord from heaven descending with grace and truth and power unending; her daystar dawns with brightest ray. O come, thou blessed One, Lord Jesu, God s own Son, Hosianna! We follow there thy feast to share, and taste the joys beyond compare. Glory now to God we render, who reigns on high in heavenly splendour; let every tongue in praise unite. Lo, we enter heaven s bright portal to join the song of saints immortal with angels round thy throne of light. No mortal joy an e er with heaven s true bliss compare; Alleluia! Rejoice below, io, io! Sing out in dulci jubilo. Seventh Reading: Revelation 22:1-7 In a vision, John sees the completion of God s promises. Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign for ever and ever. And he said to me, These words are trustworthy and true, for the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place. See, I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book. Responsory and Collect for Advent Sunday Bishop People Bishop People Judah and Jerusalem, fear not nor be dismayed. Tomorrow go ye forth and the Lord he will be with you. Stand ye still and ye shall see the salvation of the Lord. Tomorrow go ye forth and the Lord he will be with you.

Bishop People Bishop People Bishop All Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. Tomorrow go ye forth and the Lord he will be with you. We wait for your loving kindness, O Lord. In the midst of thy temple. Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility, that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen The Blessing Recessional Hymn: Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending (CP 114) Lo, He comes with clouds descending, Once for favored sinners slain; Thousand thousand saints attending Swell the triumph of His train: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
