1 Advent Evening Prayer Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Nicollet, Minnesota December 12, 2018 Suggested silent prayers: Hymns 305 and 274 all rise (see page 54 in the hymnal for music) M: ( ) Jesus Christ is the Light of the world, C: ( ) The light no darkness can overcome. M: ( ) Stay with us, Lord, for it is evening, C: ( ) And the day is almost over. M: ( ) Be our light and scatter the darkness, C: ( ) And hear our evening hymn of praise.

2 M: Blessed are you, O Lord God, King of the universe, who led your people Israel with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. Enlighten our darkness by the light of your Christ. May his Word be a lamp to our feet and a light for our path, for you are merciful, and you love your whole creation. We, your creatures, glorify you: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. C: Amen. All sit to sing Psalm 141:1 2, then pause for brief meditation. C: PSALM 85 page 97 in the front of the hymnal Pastor sings the first line; all sing the indented, second line. All sign the refrains and Glory be to the Father... After the psalm is sung, brief silence is kept for meditation. M: God of love and faithfulness, you showed favor to your people by sending your one and only Son to be our Savior. Grant us to trust in him as our gracious Redeemer and so enjoy the peace he came to bring, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. (spoken) M: Let our prayers be acceptable in your sight. Come and help us in time of need that we may sing your praise in holy joy now and forever, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen. LUKE 1:26 56 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town 27 in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a 28 descendant of David. The virgin s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind 30 of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, 31 Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and 32 give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will 33 give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end. 34 How will this be, Mary asked the angel, since I am a virgin? 35 The angel answered, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old 37 age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God. 2 3

3 38 I am the Lord s servant, Mary answered. May it be to me as you have said. Then the angel left her. 39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill 40 country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary s greeting, the baby leaped in her 42 womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child 43 you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord 44 should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached 45 my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished! And Mary said: My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit 48 rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me holy is his name. 50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. 51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered 52 those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down 53 rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the 54 hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has 55 helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers. 56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home. M: ( ) The Lord will come again in glory. The Spirit and the Church cry out: Come, Lord Jesus, come. O, for such a mind as Mary s, Thinking psalms, as notes combine; Quick to learn, by speech or silence, (John 2:1 12) When the water flowed as wine! 2. O, for such a love as Mary s, Costly, pure, enduring long, Sharing threats and thorns and darkness When most helpless, thus most strong! 3. M: ( ) For the well-being of people everywhere, for the growth of your church in all the world, especially for new efforts to reach out and connect with believers in Rwanda and Burundi, and for the strengthening of all who serve and worship here, we pray, O Lord; C: ( ) Christ, have mercy. M: ( ) For John Maas family, for those recovering from surgery, for all whom we love who suffer depression, for your blessings that come with every stage of life, and for joy in doing your will, we pray, O Lord: C: ( ) Lord, have mercy. M: ( ) For our governor, Mark Dayton, our representative and governorelect, Tim Walz, and for all our public servants who work day and night to bring protection, justice, learning, and health to this and every place, we pray to you, O Lord; C: ( ) Lord, hear our prayer. M: ( ) For favorable weather and safe roads, for clothing and food, for health of body, mind, and spirit, and for final deliverance from the darkness of all sin and every form of evil, we pray to you, O Lord: C: ( ) Lord, hear our prayer. M: ( ) For the faithful who have gone before us, who have shared with us your good news, whose souls are now at rest in your heavenly kingdom, we give you thanks, O Lord; C: ( ) Thanks be to God. M: ( ) In thanksgiving for your many and varied gifts to us, we now commend ourselves to your care. Be our shield and strength, O Lord. C: ( ) Amen. 7
