Decorate your bikes or dogs or children; or just come out and visit with your neighbors, enjoy the music and our annual, special little parade with Ed Lynch, our longtime Master of Ceremonies, who always leads a most respectful service. Tom Greene: Always a Pleasant Greeting Tom Greene, longtime Lake Elizabeth Drive resident, age 93, passed away on June 12th. A veteran of World War ll, he met and married Sabina in England, and post-war became a support agent for veterans, then a probation officer in Westborough, MA. An active volunteer for the Red Cross, United Fund and Boy Scouts, Tom was active in local politics and kept abreast of the latest technology, too. Friends remember him as an avid bridge and tennis player. He would ask about you and your family when you saw him, and it was apparent how important his family was to him. In 1978, Tom and Sabina retired to Craigville, which many of his children and grandchildren continue to enjoy. His son, Tom, shares these thoughts on his father s affection for the Village: Summers in the idyllic village of Craigville were one of my father's greatest joys. My parents first brought the family to Craigville in All of us have so many wonderful memories; fishing in Lake Elizabeth, exploring Turtle's Paradise, crabbing in the Centerville River or battling it out on the Craigville courts. My dad loved that he had been able to give us this special place and he loved watching his grandchildren carry on the Craigville traditions. Our community will surely miss Tom s good energy. The Catholic Mass in the Craigville Tabernacle on July 20th will be dedicated to Tom. Our sympathies go out to all his family on their loss. 1

2 Tabernacle Bell Will Ring Again Soon Each summer, the first Sunday morning Tabernacle service in Craigville marks a milestone on our faith journey together in community. Over the next ten weeks, we will welcome an inspiring collection of preachers, liturgists, and musicians guides for this journey. Mark your calendars the services all begin at 9:45. As it has for more than a century, the Tabernacle bell will ring at 9:30 and 9:40 to call the community to worship. Rev. Dr. Herb Davis will preach this Sunday. If you know Herb from past summers, you know we re in for a treat! Or, if this will be your first Sunday morning worship in the Tabernacle, bring an open heart, an open mind, and a thirsty spirit, ready to be filled with love, wisdom and prayer. Herb will be ably assisted by liturgist, Dr. Roger Hansen, and ushers and greeters, Jim and Valerie Lane. Uplifting music will be led by Ginny Henderson. The Tabernacle will be graced by beautiful flowers arranged by Myra Gooding. All things are ready. The CCMA Religious Activities and Tabernacle Committee and your Interim 2013 Tabernacle Administrator and Interim 2013 Tabernacle Executive Assistant have prepared this summer s Sunday morning services, holding fast to the history and tradition of the Tabernacle and profoundly grateful for the ministry of Rev. Dr. Carl Schultz, for many years the summer Worship Director. During this interim summer, our most important responsibility will be to listen to all the voices of the community. Share with us:: What do you envision for the Tabernacle? What do you love about worship, and what drives you nuts? We all want and need feedback, and will provide many opportunities for your comments. The Committee has selected hospitality as this summer s theme. I Googled Hospitality Bible and Community and got more than 4.6 million hits plenty of food for thought! My first thought: Thank God, worship doesn t take place on the Internet! It takes place when two or three (or a multitude) gather together and Christ is in their midst! We ll gather this Sunday come join in the celebration! -Steve Brown, Interim 2013 Tabernacle Administrator The 2013 Craigville Theological Colloquy From Monday, July 15 th through Friday, July 19 th Christ s Mission in the 21st Century: Sent Forth to Be God s Blessing will be considered by the Colloquy. For 30 years, Craigville has offered a unique opportunity for pastors, teachers, seminarians and laity to gather for a week in theological conversation and Bible reflection. Welcome to all. -Our reminder from Gabe Fackre TAB/BAB Open for Your Reading Enjoyment Damon has dusted the shelves in the Tabernacle narthex, Ed has touched up the hung sign stored in his garage, Don and Sally have collected books, and Mary has decreed that this season's TAB/BAB [TAKE A BOOK/ BRING A BOOK] free revolving lending library is about to commence another summer season. Damon faithfully unlocks and relocks the doors daily. Hours are 9:00-3:00, 7 days a week until Labor Day. -Don Overlock Craigville Retreat Center: Welcome to New Staff The United Church of Christ, Keene, NH will be in the Sunset Lodge from June 28 th to 30 th. The Marion Vuilleumier Memorial Service will be in the Tabernacle on Sunday, June 30 th, at 11:00 AM. The Vuilleumier family and friends are staying at the Craigville Manor and Marshviews June 28 th to July 2 nd. The Koehler Family is returning to Craigville for their annual weekly stay at the Inn June 29 th to Aug 6 th. The Dunlap Family Biennial returns to Craigville, and will be staying at the Sunset Lodge July 3 rd to 7 th. Damon s new assistant is Joe Laperle, and they are very busy getting the grounds and buildings ready for the summer. Cassie Marischen is the new reservations person, and she is doing a great job with reservations, and busy updating our website. Austin Peters is our new chef. He has worked previously at Lancaster Seminary in Pennsylvania, as well as in private schools. Please help us welcome them all to Craigville. Cindy Smith will be our summer front desk person; she has worked for us for a few years now in various positions. Alison Bissett is still in charge of the housekeeping department. She is also doing a great job on the flower boxes and vegetable gardens around the Center s buildings. -Mary A Woodbury, Director, Craigville Retreat Center 2

3 A SERVICE OF MEMORY The Religious Activities and Tabernacle Committee will host an Evening of Remembrance again this year on Friday, July 19 th at 7:30 PM in the Tabernacle, for members of the Craigville Community and their family who have passed away. Please speak to Alice Brown or Myra Gooding or so that we can remember your loved one in the Service of Memory or to list their name in this year s program of honor. Those families who would like to are asked to present a memory, thought, poem, or story about their loved one in either the written or spoken word; and/or an instrumental or vocal presentation. For those who wish their loved one to be remembered in name only, names will be read by a Committee member and printed in the program. All are welcome to participate and attend. Dress is comfortable summer casual and the spirit of the evening will be contemplative; the service will be informal and will not follow a traditional worship model. There will be no homily or sermon and no offering will be taken. -Rev. Joanne Hartunian, Chair, Religious Activities and Tabernacle Committee Let Us Know About the Tabernacle On Sunday, July 7 th, the Religious Activities and Tabernacle Committee will meet following worship for a meeting to evaluate how we are doing. Please share your joys, what you've enjoyed about worship thus far, and how we can improve upon your worship experience in the Tabernacle. 4 Red Lily Pond Project s Vision: A Healthy Pond As summer begins and the community welcomes one another after a long winter, I thank our Board of Directors for the many hours members dedicated over the winter to sustain the vision of - and progress toward - a healthy pond. In this first Chronicle of the summer season, it s important to reiterate the rationale for the Red Lily Pond Project, and the tangible steps toward this vision. For the vision to become a reality, six things need to happen: 1. Full sewering of the Craigville neighborhood to reduce nutrient flow; 2. Repairs to the fish ladder to prevent erosion; 3. Replacement of the collapsing culvert with a footbridge at the 40 steps; 4. Enlarge the culvert beneath Lake Elizabeth Drive; 5. Increase the water flow at the causeway; 6. Restock the ponds with herring; The scientific consensus that documents the need for these six steps is clear. This year, for the first time in many years, experts from the Town, County, and State have worked closely and regularly with members of our Board and scientists from the Association to Preserve Cape Cod ( the Pew Charitable Trusts ( and the Herring Alliance ( The science is sound. The challenge to moving toward completion is now primarily political and financial. Like all politics and finance, long-term success depends on the patience to stay the course with our eyes on the prize. The Red Lily Pond Project is not alone in this effort dozens of nonprofit organizations across Cape Cod are working with us to meet these challenges. This effort must continue, and will depend upon clear communication, strong advocacy, and, most of all, a well-informed community. Our goal for the summer is to keep the community well-informed while providing some fun events to inspire an even larger circle of care. Details will be shared in future Chronicles and at the CCMA/CCOA Annual Meeting on July 13 th.!steve Brown, RLPP President Craigville Cottage Owners Plan Great Summer Welcome to Summer! We began the summer with the dedication of the bench in remembrance of Davis Plunkett. His family was present, and many of us toasted him with a libation in our coffee cups. The view from the bench on the embankment in front of his house is lovely, and as we sit, we can remember our good friend who always had a word to say as we walked by. A special thanks to Jim Lane who got the necessary permit, Alan Shoemaker who selected the bench, and Scott Schofield who installed it. The Icebreaker will be held at the Hansen house on Friday, July 5 th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Bring your favorite drink and an hors d oeuvre to share. This is a wonderful way to begin the summer. If you have forgotten to pay your dues, Willie Shoemaker will gladly accept your $250 check as you arrive. Remember, your dues are needed to help our community meet its needs. Once again, special thanks to our volunteers and the Events Committee for providing us with a wonderful summer. Thank you, Willie Shoemaker, for putting in new flowers for the summer at the bulletin board. They are lovely.!lee Williams, CCOA President P.S. Many, many thanks to Willie and Alan Shoemaker for the wonderful spread for the dedication of the bench in remembrance of Davis Plunkett. It was a wonderful affair, and the family truly appreciated it. CCMA Dues Appreciated Your Christian Camp Meeting Association dues are due! You can mail them in, leave them at the Retreat Center Office or get them to Nancy Hansen. Hi to all, This is your chance to move into our unique village. Your family will create memories to treasure forever!! If you have been visiting for summers, now you can own a slice of heaven: 387 Lake Elizabeth Dr. has a large, lovely lot to build or renovate existing home. We call it "Charlie's House." Charlie Needham lived there for 25 years and truly loved the tranquility of the village; especially, the quiet and beauty of this end of the village all year round. The price has been reduced to $199,000 and is listed with Nik Atsalis at Paul Roberts R.E. ( or visit Please call me also if you wish with any questions: Thank you and happy summer! -Lesley Schultz Faber Houston, We Have a Problem And it starts with a P, and it comes from dogs, but it s not pee get the picture? PLEASE the CCOA has done their part to make it convenient to pick-up after your dog in the Village by installing 4 pet stations, complete with plastic bags. Anywhere that your dog can reach on a leash is fair game where somebody can step, in this little Village, so don t think that you and your pet can continually hide the poop. Even the tall grassy areas around the Tabernacle are frequented by many people, and dog poop is so unsavory on a summer s day. Please be a responsible pet owner, and pick it up. 5

6 Around the Town If you unlock it, lock it up again! It s the Tabernacle that we are referring to in this case. If you have a key to the Tabernacle, and you unlock it, please make certain that you lock it up again when you leave. Obviously, we would not need to remind you if there was no cause for concern. This is important, so we need your cooperation; thank you! WANTED: Used children's books in good condition for a children's library in Jamaica that I have started. Call Carole D'Alessandro at or drop them off at 34 Summerbell Ave. Books for any age level or of any type (simple readers to young adult fiction) will be GREATLY appreciated. WANTED: The Religious Activities and Tabernacle Committee is looking for someone who will prepare a Word Document File of pertinent Tabernacle information gathered from several sources. Community Service credits offered to students. Approximately 1-2 hours of typing depending on proficiency and speed. Documents are dated and scanning will not produce a clean readable copy. Contact joannehartunian@gmail.com. The Travel section of the Boston Globe on June 9, 2013 featured Barnstable, and readers were encouraged to see the Craigville Retreat Center, with our bungalows with gingerbread trim and a tabernacle built in 1871 along with Four Seas Ice Cream, of course. FEATHER / FUN FACTS: CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR By DEBBIE ALMY Every home that has a furnace, or any source of heat that is considered a fossil fuel must, by state law of MA, have at least one carbon monoxide detector in the house. A fossil fuel is any natural product of the earth that is used to create heat, so that includes oil, kerosene, gasoline, coal, charcoal and natural gas. However, no one has bothered to inform the general public that the detectors have a shelf life of 7 years, and no matter how new the batteries are in the detector, it will fail or wear out. At 1:20 AM recently, my CO detector started to chirp with an ear splitting volume that would wake anyone out of a sound sleep. I hopped up, took the detector downstairs, but stood there thinking, how can I tell if the detector is working correctly or not? Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas which kills many people every year. A person cannot tell if the poisonous gas is in the air until they begin to get very sleepy, nauseated, vomiting and experience general fatigue. If the amount of the gas is high enough, people will pass out, never to regain consciousness. Unlike when a smoke detector begins to sound off and you can tear around your house sniffing frantically to see if there is any smoke, there is absolutely no way to check on carbon monoxide gas. So what is one to do? I called the fire department and informed them that the detector was chirping, not screaming, and asked their advice. They said they would send a truck out right away and I asked them to not have the whole squad arrive and they assured me they were only sending one truck. Within a few moments three large fireman were marching through my house with meters in their hands checking out all spaces, with a zero reading on all the meters. That is when I found out that no matter how new the batteries are in a carbon monoxide detector, unless it is within 7 years old, it has died a natural death. They also said that a smoke detector will work fine for years as long as it has fresh batteries in it, for the two detectors work very differently. Now try to go back to sleep at 1:45 AM after all this commotion! So be warned to check the date on the detector, for the next day when I went to purchase a new one, the manufacturer s date was 2011, so I have written on the detector in magic marker when to replace it next. I guess my question to be asked to the fire departments and authorities is, why don t they inform the general public about the shelf life of the CO detectors, as they are constantly reminding people to change the batteries in their smoke detectors? It sure would save people from going through a sleepless night as I did. *************************************************************************************************************************************** INCLUDED WITH THIS EDITION ARE THE SUMMER PAINTERS CALENDAR, THE SUMMER EVENTS CALENDAR, THE SUMMER TABERNACLE PREACHING SCHEDULE, AND, BY SPECIAL REQUEST, THE WELCOME TO CRAIGVILLE POSTER. 9 !"#$%&"'(%'$)*+,-+##"'-+##*,"' Cape Cod, Massachusetts - Established in 1872 This is a unique Village enjoyed by young and old, guests and residents. It is a special community of some ninety homes and the Craigville Retreat Center in which all religious denominations are welcome. Founded in 1872 as a camp meeting ground, Craigville maintains a quiet family environment blended with Retreat Center activities. Please respect this environment and do not litter, or dress in a manner inconsistent with a family-oriented community; we suggest wearing cover-ups over bathing attire. We all live in close proximity here, so kindly avoid excessive noise between 10 PM and 8 AM, and bear in mind that your neighbors are within earshot of many sounds such as loud stereos, power equipment or barking dogs. Please exercise consideration for all. MOTOR VEHICLES & BICYCLES - There are many young children in this village. Please drive slowly and carefully, observing all the safety rules and signs, including 15 mph speed limit signs, stop signs, one-way streets and no parking areas. Cars should be parked out of the traffic lane, and not on both sides of a narrow road. Bike riders must observe all traffic regulations as well. The two parking lots should be utilized when possible. OUTDOOR FIRES - Proximity and age of Village buildings makes fire our most feared disaster. Please exercise extreme caution and be alert to the direction barbeque smoke or fumes take. Open fires are prohibited. DOGS - Barnstable Law requires that dogs must be on a leash when off their property, and please keep them off the Midway and the Green. Remember to clean-up after your dog and be alert to excessive barking. HISTORIC POST OFFICE - No longer a Federal operation, the sale of gifts, clothing and cottage sundries supports our historic building. Open 8:30AM-12:30 PM summer weekdays and Saturdays. REFUSE CANS & CLOTHES LINES - Kindly be discrete about refuse cans (to be covered securely) and clotheslines, and avoid draping towels over fences and porch railings. TENNIS - Use of the tennis courts is restricted to 8:30 AM until 8 PM. Players should wear appropriate tennis clothes. Craigville Tennis Club members and Retreat Center guests may arrange court time at the Tennis Shack. LAKE ELIZABETH/RED LILY POND - Please avoid using detergents that contain phosphates, as they promote unwanted weed growth in Lake Elizabeth-Red Lily Ponds. We also discourage feeding the ducks, swans and geese, because they become dependent on the handouts and it also pollutes the pond. PROGRAMS - There are many programs available to all through the Retreat Center. Evening Tabernacle programs are open to the public. Tabernacle services are held each Sunday during the summer at 9:45 AM, with many notable clergy officiating. Membership information at Craigville's private beach is available at the Office in the Lodge. PLAYGROUND - Swings and slide provided for young children for use from 8 AM to 10 PM. MEMBERSHIP in the Craigville Tennis Club, the CBA Association Beach, the Red Lily Pond Project Association, and the Christian Camp Meeting Association is invited. If you own property in the Village, we hope you will join the Craigville Cottage Owners' Association. WE HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR STAY IN THIS VERY SPECIAL PLACE! We invite you to peruse the Community Bulletin Board outside the Craigville Post Office and consult the Craigville Chronicle, the weekly summer newsletter, to find out about current Village activities and upcoming events.
