Dear Friends, The generosity of our donors continues to astound us especially during what are still difficult economic conditions. We are encouraged by each gift that is given to help local people in need. Whether it s a large or small gift, rest assured that the gift is appreciated and will be used wisely to assist our less fortunate neighbors. It is an honor to serve the people of the Midlands. However, I hope you will recognize that The Salvation Army is not only our ministry; it is your ministry, too. As you donate funds, time and talents, you are serving the least of these. You are on the team. You are part of the Army. So we are optimistic about our future in the Midlands as we unite ourselves in service to uplift and provide hope to the hopeless. In 2010, here are just a few things that your Salvation Army was able to do at the hands of our staff and volunteers: Served nearly 47,000 meals to the homeless and hungry of our community Provided utility bill assistance for 633 households Sent 68 children and youth to summer camp for a week Distributed 3,642 clothing vouchers Distributed 150 furniture vouchers Assisted 8,969 individuals during the Christmas season Provided clothes, shoes and school supplies for 126 children Your generosity allows us to continue this important work. We are thankful for your support and charitable giving. The good work of The Salvation Army presses onward because of you, the Army behind the Army. Many Blessings, Majors Roger and Melody Coulson Area Coordinator/Corps Officer, Coordinator for Women s Ministries/Corps Officer 01

Dear Friends, The unprecedented economic downturn of the last couple of years has placed hardships on Americans as few have experienced in modern times. We pray that the corner has been turned and burdens start to ease. However, there remains far too many men, women, and children in our Midlands community who continue to struggle at a level most of us will never experience. Loss of jobs, inability to pay utility bills, provide a well balanced meal, obtain decent clothing or other basic needs, and the rising number of foreclosures or inability to pay rent are the primary reasons that most individuals and families turn to The Salvation Army for assistance. The Salvation Army provides basic social services with provisions for clothing, furniture, rent, prescription medication costs, utilities and food boxes. Kitchen staff and volunteers serve meals to the homeless and hungry seven days a week. Emergency help for fire victims is available by providing temporary shelter provisions and items from the Family Store. Underprivileged children are sent to summer camp and are given new well-fitting clothes to begin each school year with confidence. Most importantly, The Salvation Army church provides spiritual comfort through Bible study, worship services and special programs. Your generous donations of time and money fuel these efforts. The Salvation Army works tirelessly to stretch its dollars as far as possible. We take our responsibility seriously, serving with faith, hope and compassion. The Salvation Army needs your help now more than ever. Your contributions of time as a volunteer, and contributions of money, clothing, furnishings and other goods are needed to help fund and provide services. Please join my family in supporting this wonderful effort with your financial support, time and prayers. Sincerely, Steven M. Anastasion Advisory Board Chairman 02

Christmas Hargrove: Touched by a Single Act of Kindness The Salvation Army extended a hand of friendship to Christmas Hargrove and her family when they first moved to town about fifteen years ago. In fact, a single act of kindness made an impact on Christmas in a profound way. Now she joins The Salvation Army in extending the hand of generosity to help others who are in need. I just remember people coming that morning with a box of food and a plate of cookies, she said with a smile. The Salvation Army provided food to the Hargrove family at their home when some I see The Salvation Army of their items turned up missing during a move from Richmond, as a safe haven and as a Virginia to Columbia, South Carolina. family. Christmas Hargrove Basically, whenever the doors are open, I m here, said the twenty year old. Christmas goal is to one day become a Salvation Army officer. She currently takes Human Services classes at Midlands Technical College and plans to assist at a Corps for one to two years before entering Evangeline Booth College, the School for Officer Training in Atlanta, Georgia. I see The Salvation Army as a safe haven and as a family, she said. You have your bumps in the road, but when it all comes down, you know that you re loved. 05

Helped by the Woodyard Fund: Michelle Zeigler (Re-published article from The State newspaper) The story below appeared in The State Newspaper on Monday, February 1, The Salvation Army is grateful to The State for allowing the story to be re-published in this Annual Report. Posted on Mon. Feb. 01, 2010 Woodyard fund: Woman wants to return favor When I get back on my feet, I d like to contribute the fund to help others By SARAH PETERMAN Special to The State Michelle Zeigler was visiting the Salvation Army recently when a notice about the Woodyard Fund caught her eye. I saw a sign offering help to pay your electric bill and I was curious, Zeigler said. The 45-year old had good reason to be. Her power bill had increased by more than $60 following a cold December. Living on a fixed income, Zeigler wasn t sure how she would make ends meet. So she spoke with someone at the Salvation Army about the Woodyard Fund, which helps families struggling to keep their heat on during the winter months. When my budget changes, I worry, said Zeigler, adding that had the Woodyard Fund not been available to help pay her heating bill, it would have affected how much money she had for food. While Zeigler hasn t applied for funding before, she found the application process simple and learned later that same day that she would be eligible for help. I was very happy, Zeigler said. Lord know I needed it. Since receiving support from the Woodyard Fund, Zeigler said it has motivated her to want to do more for the community. When I get back on my feet, I d like to contribute to the fund to help others like I ve been helped, she said. The Woodyard Fund traces its origins to 1816, when the Ladies Benevolent Society provided firewood to families in need. The society turned management of the charity over to the Salvation Army around the turn of the 20th century. Through the fund, eligible households get vouchers that can be redeemed at businesses that provide heating services. The Salvation Army reimburses the businesses for the amounts of the vouchers. Zeigler said knowing the fund is there for her and others is a comfort. It is good for the community. It shows service and that somebody out there cares, Zeigler said TheState.com and wire service sources. All Rights Reserved. 06

Volunteer Spotlight: Delray Jones Behind the double doors leading into The Salvation Army Family Store sales floor is a dimly lit, wide open warehouse space where donated clothes, furniture and household items arrive before customers are given access to them for purchase. Here, items are processed and priced before their transfer to the front of the store. This back room is one of the places where Delray Jones feels most at home. In fact, he volunteers there every Saturday, and his smile always lights up the room. In 1997, Jones, 55, came to The Salvation Army looking for help with an alcohol addiction. At the Army, he spent over six months in a program where he was mentored and cared for by warm, loving people. This was the first time I did something for myself, said Jones about seeking help. When he finished the program, he walked out with a smile on his face because he knew that his life had been changed. I re-met God in the program and learned that God has an answer for everything, he said. Since 1999, Jones has been a Family Store volunteer, sorting clothes, filling the bailer, driving the forklift and whatever they need after that. Volunteering at the store has helped him stay sober and he delights in the time he is able to spend helping others. He was once asked by someone if he received a paycheck from The Salvation Army for his work at the Family Store. But Jones views his compensation with an eternal perspective. I get paid by Him, he said about his relationship with God. Delray Jones is a humble volunteer whose presence and work at the store is a beautiful picture of the mission and work of The Salvation Army. He has donated hundreds of hours and his service is much appreciated. 07
