Zizelman It was a night to remember not only because of the good food and fellowship of the Scioto Lodge s 26th Annual Top Scholars Banquet, but because of the stars of the event, the top scholars of the Class of 2015 from area high schools. When I was your age, said Worshipful Master Neil A. Zizelman, my grandfather told me I would remember this time as the best days of my life. I m telling you the same thing now. Zizelman expressed wonder at the accomplishments listed on the 35 applications the lodge received for the three $1,000 scholarships awarded at the May 11th banquet. Two of the awards were presented to graduates who have a father or grandfather in Scioto Lodge #6. The lodge has awarded $30,000 to high school seniors since the inception of the program. Zizelman reminded everyone that the scholarship program is funded by the Lodge s Annual Fish & Tenderloin Fry which this year is scheduled for June 5th at the Lion s Club Shelter in Yoctangee Park. The scholars took turns at the podium, introducing themselves and explaining which high schools they were from and which universities they would be attending and which majors they would pursue. Two young men were headed to military academies, one to West Point and the other to Annapolis. The lodge played host to a crowd of nearly 70 guests, including the grads, parents, guidance counselors and principals of local high schools. Even though the weather was unseasonably warm, the group dined in air-conditioned comfort because of recent improvements in the Moll Dining Room. They enjoyed a dinner of seasoned chicken breasts, baconwrapped green beans and rice pilaf with appetizers of fresh shrimp, lobster crostini, deli wraps and fresh fruit. Dessert was crème brulee, a rich custard topped with caramelized sugar. All the food was prepared by volunteers under the supervision of Lodge Secretary Bill Bennett. Bad weather caused a power outage at the tail-end of the banquet which put the Masonic Temple in darkness. The lodge regrets any inconvenience experienced by members of guests who had to use the stairs to exit the building. Tom Castor W.B. Michael A. Ash, Recipient Abby Perry W.M. Neil A. Zizelman W.B. Restaurant features an array of wines to compliment it menu. Ken Moyer and is wife Mary visited many states looking for just the place to start a winery. They settled on the Ohio River near the Village of Manchester in 1972 and purchased the land that today produces the grapes for Moyer Wines. The rustic building on the property has an interesting history. Built in 1926 it first served as a Restaurant and dance hall named " The River By " featuring nickelodeon music, square dancing and bootleg beer during prohibition. Around 1935 amateur boxers, including Ezzard Charles fought in the barn like structure beside the restaurant. The flood of the Ohio River in 1937 put 6 feet of mud in the present dining room. In the late 40's it became a private gambling club called " The Top Hat " and in the 50's and 60's it was used as a truck stop. Ken and Mary opened Moyer's in The initial menu included wine tasting, French bread, bean soup and cheese. Over the next 26 years Mary and Ken expanded the menu and the wine list. With the addition of the deck, diners can enjoy the river traffic of barges, pleasure boats and the occasional paddle wheeler passing by. In1999 Ken and Mary sold Moyer Vineyards to a group of friends dedicated to maintaining the quality, tradition and reputation Moyer's has enjoyed for many years. While dining at Moyer's one can see the vineyards to the north and south of the restaurant. The plantings include the Vidal Blanc grapes pressed for Moyer wine wines and the DeChaunac and Chambourcin grapes blended for Moyer red wines. Moyer wines are produced and bottled in the modern winery below the restaurant. Harvested grapes are pressed on the day picked to insure freshness. The wine making process includes grape de-stemming and crushing by modern Italian equipment, pressing in French presses, and fermentation in stainless steal tanks for two to six weeks prior to aging.
