Dr. James B. Simons The Trumpet July/August 2018 One of the hallmarks of the Episcopal Church is that, unlike our mother church (The Church of England) our founders placed a high value on lay participation at every level of church government. Consequently, parishes have vestries, diocesan conventions have lay deputies and so does the General Convention which is our highest legislative body. The General Convention consists of two houses, Deputies and Bishops. Every Bishop (even those who have retired) have the right to sit in the house and every diocese has four lay and four clergy deputies. On certain matters the laity and clergy vote separately. Convention in 1785 the rules stated that three Bishops were needed to there were two houses was The General Convention considers resolutions on a variety of issues but nothing becomes the policy of the church unless the resolution is passed in the exact same language by both houses. In other words, the authority of Bishops is far from absolute. At it s beginning the General Convention was a modest affair but over the years, as the church is now composed of 110 dioceses, the House of Deputies has grown to nearly 900 members and The House of Bishops to well over 200. I have been told that when we meet it is the largest legislative body in the world. Convention meets every three years and this year it is meeting in Austin Texas. While the legislative days start on July 5th and end on July 13th most deputies need to arrive several days in advance. During the course of those 9 days the convention will deal with resolutions covering everything from Prayer Book Revision, to immigration policy, to reuniting with the church in Cuba. This will be my 10th convention as a deputy and my 4th chairing the Committee on Dispatch of Business. This committee is responsible for making sure that every resolution comes out of committee in proper form and is placed on the appropriate calendar for the House to consider. It s a huge job but one which I have enjoyed. I ll leave for Austin after church on Sunday, July 1st and return on Saturday, July 14th. Please keep the Convention, our deputation, and me in prayer. Peace, Jim 2

A reception will follow. The Trumpet July/August 2018 I HEARD THE OWL CALL MY NAME book, I Heard The Owl Call My Name, in Canada. It was relatively unknown until an American publisher picked it up in 1973 and soon it went on to sell over a million copies and was made into a TV movie. The book is the story of a young Canadian Anglican priest who is assigned to an indigenous people s parish in coastal British Columbia. It is a touching and often poignant exploration of faith, friendship, and cultural understanding. I reread the book recently and thought it was worth recommending to you all and offering an evening to discuss it. At 160 pages it s a relatively easy read. Copies will be available in the church office mid-july and those who wish to discuss it will gather in the Smith House at 7PM Wednesday, August 29th. A sign up sheet will be posted in the Smith House. Please mark your calendar and plan on joining us. JBS CHURCH SCHOOL BEGINS Sunday, September 9th If you are new to St. Michael's or know of a family that might be interested in joining us in the Fall please contact Erin McNeill ( ). Dan Giovannelli, Executive Director of CWHH, said that some last minute touches are needed on these houses, before they can be occupied. Depending on your interest, as well as your physical ability, you are welcome to join this year s team. Participating on a Build Team is a great way to meet people from our parish. A Build Team is composed of no more than 20 people, and participants must be at least 16 years of age. A sign-up sheet is located on the bulletin board in the Smith House. Directions and other important information will be sent to participants. Deadline is July 22. If you have questions, please contact Anne Bush ( ) or bushah1@comcast.net. 3

We appreciated the help of Joanne Copeland, Amy Henson and Laura Varga, with a guest appearance by Sam Off for help with the sandwiches, in manning the booth. We could not have done it without you. Gratefully, Lisa and Bobbie. 4
5 68th ST. MICHAEL S COUNTRY DAY FAIR ~ THANK YOU!! many parishioners, who spent hours planning and actively participating in the day s events. gourmet makes when arriving at The Fair. A special thank you goes to the respective chairpersons, Ann Woodall, Peggy Vale, Lisa Laskow, Bobbie Off, Cindy Purnell, and Nan Rost. table greeted the early bargain hunters. For the lovers of picnic fare the Belavic family ran the Smokehouse Grill. Years ago Tom Nimick introduced crepes to The Fair, using a secret recipe with a very special sauce. Sandy Fryer, with the help of her daughter, Jessica Yates carried on the tradition. Thank you! The laughter of children could be heard on Saturday, June 9th, as they discovered all the activities especially designed for them. Melissa Zimmerman reported that Wood Bridge was very busy with sand art activities. Sharing a tent with Wood Bridge, Patty Jones and Ann Hewat painted young faces with unique designs. Julie Follansbee walked throughout the fairgrounds creating balloon sculptures. Erin and Adam McNeill, with the help of volunteers entertained youngsters with a variety of age appropriate activities. This year s new attraction, Andy Scott s Side Car ride became a popular destination for the young and the young at heart. Thank you! Liz Williams chaired the Peruvian Handicraft booth, featuring beautiful crafted creations from the artisans of Peru. Susan and John Parks, one of the missionary families that we support, brought these unique items to our attention. Hopefully, these exquisite designs will be a part of future fairs. One does not need to travel far to see beautiful clothing. Once again, Muriel Wilder, created lovely American Girl doll clothes. Speaking of beautiful things, Janet Wood Bridge Books, Toys, and More, evolved from last year s Wood Bridge Wee Cycle Kid s Closet. Under the guidance of Beth Scott, Wood Bridge parents donated no longer used children s furniture, toys, and books. The Book Nook, under the guidance of Shelley Miller and her committee, sold lots of reading material, and now it is time to think about restocking. Susan Williams chaired The Potting Shed, stocked with annuals and perennials, as for their garden. Thank you! Several years ago, Erin McNeill introduced to us the Adelphoi students, who have become a very integral part of The Fair team. These students and their counselors help to setup and tear down booths, move heavy objects and boxes, and help with any other job that needs to be done. Without their help, The Fair could not continue as we know it. Thank you for your community service. A special thank you goes to all the people, who volunteered to make The Fair a success. Quietly, as The Fair ends, our custodian, Rick McLauglin, whose guidance and hard work was greatly appreciated. Bill Morrow, former custodian, continued as night watchman in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Miss Stephanie lovingly watched over the wee ones, so parents could shop or work. Rex Ashbrook, once again agreed to be the treasurer, and his expertise was greatly appreciated. Lastly, a special thank you goes to St. Michael s staff, Father Jim, Belva, and Debbie, whose input and guidance was very helpful. Jan Carlin, chairperson Anne Bush, co-chairperson 5
