4 PARISH MINISTRIES 79 th GENERAL CONVENTION July 5 13, 2018 Austin Convention Center Austin, Texas The General Convention is the governing body of The Episcopal Church that meets every three years. The theme is The Jesus Movement: Loving, Liberating and Life-Giving. The Joint Standing Committee on Program, Budget and Finance invites comments on the proposed budget for the triennium. You can also view a draft agenda, along with other details at WEDNESDAY JUNE 27 5:45 p.m. Parish Hall Invite a friend and enjoy the fellowship with your parish family. Bring a dish of food to share. Childcare provided. We must discover the power of love, the redemptive power of love. And when we do that, we will make of this old world a new world. Love is the only way. Jesus did not get an honorary doctorate for dying. He wasn t getting anything out of it. He sacrificed his life for the good of others, for the well-being of the world, for us. That s what love is. Think and imagine a world when love is the way. Because when love is the way, we actually treat each other like we are actually family. When love is the way, we know that God is the source of us all. And we are brothers and sisters, children of God. My brothers and sisters, that s a new Heaven, a new Earth, a new world, a new human family. -The Most Rev. Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, USA May 19, 2018 FROM THE FLOWER GUILD If you d like to give the flowers on a particular Sunday, the 2018 flower chart is available at the entrance to the church. Yet, there is more work to be done, said Ron Glusenkamp, campaign director. We re inviting individuals, congregations, synods and our partners to join us as we rally and make additional gifts to these life-giving ministries. Learn more at elca.org/campaign. All children ages 3 years thru 6 th grade are invited to bring a friend and jump in to the fun! For online registration forms, visit Registration forms are also available in the church on Sundays and in the office during the week. We will need older youth and adults to jump in too and help in areas such as group leaders, snacks, and games. If you can help in any of these areas, please contact Amber Buckley or Michelle Hester. SUNDAY LECTIONARY SUNDAYS ~ 9:30 a.m. South breakout room of the Parish Hall The Sunday Lectionary Class is a Christian education offering for adults that meets every Sunday year-round. This gathering features a presentation on selected texts from the scriptures appointed for the day s liturgy, followed by lively discussions as the class wrestles with the readings to find meanings for today. The presentations and discussions aim to be enlightening, nourishing and challenging (and many say they re frequently entertaining as well). With participants ranging from the outspoken to the quiet listener and everything in between, there is a place for everyone seeking to hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. All are welcome, especially visitors and newcomers. Contact the church office to be added to the group s weekly list. Lay persons face the difficult and often subtle task of interpreting the richness of the church's faith in a complex and confusing world. They need a theological education which supports their faith and also teaches them to express that faith in day-to-day events. As the emphasis on lay ministry has grown, EfM has come to play an important role by providing a program that develops an informed and knowledgeable laity. The EfM program is preparation for the ministry to which we all are called. It is that vocation for which we pray at the end of the Eucharist: "And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord." Areas of study include, the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, Church History and Theology, Ethics, and Interfaith Encounter. Enrollment for the academic year 2018/2019 is now open. Tuition is $375 for the year (includes books). For more information, contact Ken Murphree or Tommie Moore.
