4 PARISH MINISTRIES SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 8:30 a.m. Holy Communion In the Church Using liturgy from Evangelical Lutheran Worship It is celebrated on the first Monday in September. In many other countries, May Day (May 1) is the day working people are honored. Most of Europe celebrates May Day. For many, Labor Day symbolizes the end of summer. As of July 2016, there were more than 159 million people in the civilian labor force in the US. September 5, New York City held the first Labor Day parade. It is estimated that 10,000 workers participated (US Census Bureau). Not all employers supported the idea, but many union workers took the first Monday in September off anyway. Some unions levied fines against workers who did go into work. At the time, workers received time off for Christmas, the Fourth of July and every other Sunday Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day a legal holiday President Grover Cleveland and the US Congress made it a national holiday. -CNN Fast Facts For children in Kindergarten 6 th grade We are pleased to announce that Sue Ann Averett and Cindy Smith will be taking the leadership role with our Jr. EYC group! They will be assisted by Samantha Houston, Corey Jackson and Alex Watson. Jr. EYC will begin their programming year later in September. Watch future communications for all the details! 10:45 a.m. Holy Eucharist In the Church Using liturgy from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer 5:00 p.m. Holy Eucharist In the Chapel Using liturgy from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer Time to get creative and paint pottery! Wednesday, September 20 5:30 7:30 p.m. ECW will meet at Wet Paint, located at 4344 Mall Drive (just a few buildings down from Hobby Lobby). Party room will open at 5:30 and close at 7:30. Attendees can come anytime that is convenient but should expect to paint for about an hour. Refreshments will be provided but you are welcome to bring your favorite beverage. Pottery pieces range from $1-$80 and includes all paint, glazing and firing. It s going to be fun so don t miss out on this one! Ultreya is a Spanish word, derived from the original Latin, meaning Onward! It was in common use by pilgrims to greet and to encourage one another along the way. This word is now used by the Cursillo community to signify the meeting which is held after a Cursillo experience. This meeting may be between Cursillistas from one or several communities. In a climate of friendship, members share their life experiences based on the three tenets of Cursillo life i.e. prayer, study and action, or based on a passage from Scripture. If you have attended Cursillo and would be interested in joining an Ultreya group at All Saints, please call the office at

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3 Saints Brew will be having an open house to celebrate our 10 th anniversary. Plans are in their initial stages and if you wish to assist with the celebration please contact me. The Open House will take place between the hours of 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. while we serve breakfast to our guests and supporters. United Way is beginning its fall campaign. As a United Way agency, please, when asked to contribute say yes. Saints Brew can be noted as the agency you would like your pledge to support. All the United Way agencies need the support of our surrounding counties to continue to provide services. MUTEH (Mississippi United to End Homelessness) will soon have an employee full-time in the Tupelo area. This will be a great service for our homeless individuals. I have been told that the MUTEH employee will come to Saints Brew to assist our homeless guests in getting housing and wrap around services. I wish to thank all that have contributed food products, made a monetary donation or donated their time to keep Saints Brew functioning. Without all of the contributions everyone has made this ministry could not continue. A huge thank you is extended to the Tupelo Elvis Presley Fan Club, which donated numerous coffee mugs when asked. We currently could use donations of cereal, sugar, coffee, canned fruit and creamer. Cereal is not ever purchased but our guests frequently eat both the hot breakfast and cereal. -Mona Warlick Serving a full, hot breakfast to those in need JULY 149 volunteers served 1,406 meals Since 2010, we have served 138,692 meals Critical needs: Coffee and cereal. Other needs: Creamer, sugar, and canned fruit.
6 CHRIST THE KING Celebrating Reformation 500! 3 Things You May Not Know About the Reformation The Reformation created a demand for all kinds of religious writings. Readership was so great that the number of books printed in Germany increased from about 150 in 1518 to nearly 1,000 six years later. While reformers rejected marriage as a sacrament of the church, they expanded the role of the church in marriage. Couples took an oath before God and the ceremony was moved from outside the church on the doorstep a medieval practice to inside the sanctuary in front of the altar. Luther composed more than 40 hymns in his lifetime, and in 1529 wrote and composed the tune for what became known as The Battle Hymn of the Reformation today called A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. Reprinted from Living Lutheran July 2017 issue SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 Council Meeting Notes On Saturday, August 12 Christ the King held a potluck where members gathered for fellowship and discussion of the All Saints /CtK joint task force recommendations for our congregations. Following the larger meeting, the CtK church council held their quarterly session. Highlights from this meeting include: Voted to approve the recommendations of the task force and move forward toward a formal partnership agreement between CtK and All Saints. Appointed Michelle Hester to serve as the CtK representative on All Saints vestry. Appointed Toni Hill to serve as the CtK representative on the All Saints budget committee. Appointed Emily Jackson to serve as the CtK representative on the All Saints worship committee. Welcomed Rufus Van Horn as the newest member of CtK s council in his position as the All Saints representative. Voted to host Beer n-brats for both congregations on Wednesday, October 25 to commemorate the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation. Beer-n-Brats was such a success last year that the council hopes to make this an annual event. 8:30 a.m. Holy Communion In the Church Using liturgy from Evangelical Lutheran Worship 10:45 a.m. Holy Eucharist In the Church Using liturgy from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer 5:00 p.m. Holy Eucharist In the Chapel Using liturgy from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer CHRIST the KING COUNCIL Precious Hill, Jimmy Hill, Rufus Van Horn, Corey Jackson, Emily Jackson, Flo Poplin and Joshua Hester.
7 CHRISTIAN FORMATION The Sunday Lectionary is a Christian education offering for adults led by Les Alvis, that meets every Sunday year-round at 9:30 a.m. in the south breakout room of the Parish Hall. This gathering features a CATECHESIS of the GOOD SHEPHERD Sundays 9:30 a.m. presentation on selected texts from the scriptures appointed for the day s liturgy, followed by lively discussion as the class wrestles with the readings to find meanings for today. The presentations and discussions aim to be enlightening, nourishing and challenging (and many say they re frequently entertaining as well). With participants ranging from the outspoken to the quiet listener and everything in between, there is a place for everyone seeking to hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thoughtful engagement with the Christian tradition helps us to see God at work in our lives and in the world around us. All are welcome, especially visitors and newcomers. Contact the church office to be added to the group s weekly list. Education for Ministry will begin their studies in September. Pam Carman and Ken Murphree will be returning as co-mentors of the group which includes Deanna Alford, Margaret Barshaw, Virginia Chambers, Cristel Cody, Harry Dieckmann, Beth Harris, Michelle Hester, Emily Jackson, and Jeff Tomlinson. Registration for EfM has now closed for the 2017/2018 academic year. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a mainstay at All Saints. For 3-year-olds to those in the sixth grade, it is a Montessori approach to the religious formation of children, rooted in the Bible and the liturgy of the church. It also adheres to the educational principals of Maria Montessori, whose philosophy was to teach children with an emphasis on independence, freedom within limits, and respect for a child s intrinsic desire to learn. Each atrium or classroom is led by an adult catechist with a minimum of 90 hours of training. Our certified catechists are: LEVEL I: Natalie Bullock, Tricia Edmonson and Joellen Murphree. LEVEL II: Mary Howard King, Marrion Winders LEVEL III: Kamme Riddle, Stacy White ASSISTANTS: Ashley Arthur, Sue Ann Averett, Tori Darsey and Emily Jackson. This group is strongly committed in helping your children deepen their relationship with God and Jesus the Good Shepherd while helping them to participate more fully in our liturgy. Josh Westmoreland returns to guide our 7 th 12 th graders through topical, yet Bible-based lessons based on current events and other trending subjects that have an immediate relevancy to youth. What better way to capture the attention of a young person than to discuss things that are important to them, to talk about what they are talking about. This class meets on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in the Sr. High Sunday School room.
