Savannah Baptist Association Missionary Rev. Rothell Buddy Wasson Recently, I was asked by Joe Westbury of the Christian Index, What is the greatest thing that is happening in the Savannah Baptist Association? My answer to him was, Building relationships. I am a very relational person and I believe that to truly have a successful ministry, you have to be able to build relationships with those to whom you desire to minister. I believe that the majority of Christ s ministry was based on His building relationships with people and if there has ever been anyone we should mimic, it should be the Lord Jesus Christ. With that being said, I believe that the overall health of Savannah Baptist Association is good. The attendance, as well as the fellowship, at our Pastor s s has been really good. The information that I am receiving from the Churches of the Savannah Baptist Association is that most churches are doing well and the different Ministries of the Association are strong. As an Association, we serve at the pleasure of the Associational Churches. It has been my goal, and the goal of the Association Leadership, to avail ourselves to help the local church in any way. It would really surprise you to know some of the things we are asked, but let me say that it is a joy and a privilege and truly a blessing to help God s churches. Might I say, I m having the time of my life, ministering to His Church. We are still working on our efforts for Evangelism and Missions in the Association. As we embark upon a new year, Evangelism and Missions are at the forefront of our endeavors. Cuba is very much on our radar as our International Mission effort. We know that the Church is of most importance to Jesus Christ and we are aware that the Churches of the Savannah Baptist Association are ministering in great ways where God has planted them. Our desire is to be a ministry that facilitates joint cooperative efforts for His Church. Thank you for the privilege of serving you in that capacity. 11

Savannah Baptist Center Stephanie Carr, Director Mission Statement The Savannah Baptist Center exists to bring glory to God by bringing churches, groups, and individuals together to serve and meet the needs of our community. A community serving a community.through the evolution of ministry The prayer ministry started in April That ministry serves as the common thread through all areas of the Baptist Center. The development process: Prayer ministry volunteers observed ministry situations and opportunities while serving volunteers requested additional training God provided the materials and curriculum mission training class were offered volunteers applied teaching principles through serving at the Baptist Center Clients are empowered and motivated through prayerful encouragement Clients seek and receive work readiness assistance Clients transition from surviving to taking steps of employment and permanent housing Some class participants help to develop a new benevolence policy at their church God is glorified as communication and guidance from Him is the foundation of all ministries at the Baptist Center. Volunteers and mission teams promoted, decorated, taught, served, and provided two meals daily. Children that attended live in neighboring housing, attend neighborhood churches, have participated in our summer camp, were part of our Christmas adopt a family program, and/or are staying in local homeless shelters. Summer Ministry Thank you for your prayers this summer. We are grateful for the teams and mission groups that served with us this summer. The teams joined us for children s park ministry and 4 weeks of VBS summer day camp. They also completed painting projects, yard work, and processed donations. We were also blessed to visit RA/GA camp with three volunteers and presented information to adults and children about God s work at the Center. We are grateful for the offerings and items collected for the Center during Vacation Bible School at our Associational churches. Thanksgiving Food Bags We are thankful for the many churches and individuals who contributed to this project. 25 bags of grocery items needed for a Thanksgiving meal were provided. A $20 Kroger gift card and a Thanksgiving message were included in each bag. The recipients of these bags include ladies who participate in women s ministries at the Center. 12

Christmas 2016 Community Christmas Dinner Thank you to all who served and participated in our annual event. 128 people enjoyed a Christmas musical performance and a wonderful lunch. Approximately 37 Baptist Center volunteers were joined by musicians and choir members from a local church. What great fun, food, and fellowship as we serve our Lord! Christmas Care Packages Thank you to all who participated in this outreach event. Many churches contributed items, made tote bags, assembled bags, and sorted donated items. 125 bags were prepared to share with those who receive services at the Center. In addition to giving a gift to our clients, our goal was to share God s love with our friends and show them the true meaning of Christmas. Thank you! 2017 Spring Break 2017 We want to offer a VBS-type day camp during Chatham County Spring Break If your church would be interested in leading a 3-day camp, Monday 3/20/2017 Wednesday 3/22/2017, please contact us. Summer Day Camp and Park Ministry Please contact us to reserve available dates if your church wants to participate in this ministry opportunity. 13

Seafarers Ministry 2016 Rev. Everett Tumblin, Director 1: Activity The port of Savannah continues to grow in terms of vessels calling, cargo moved and stored, and opportunities to befriend seafarers from many nations. From October 2015 through 30 September 2016, I performed ministry on 117 days/1049 hours, exceeding last year. One of our Chaplains with International Seamen s House was ill during some of the year and I increased my weekly hours in his absence. Roy Lee, volunteer from New Providence BC, Guyton, assisted on many Thursday evenings, and is very helpful. We boarded 62 vessels, transporting 1389 seafarers on 162 shopping trips and providing shuttle service to our facilities, where WI-FI, computers, phones, snacks, and games are available at no cost to seafarers. I drove 9,051 miles. Thank you, Savannah Baptists, for enabling this witness and ministry. 2. Highlights: Support from churches has been excellent this year and invitations to share the ministry personally was extended by Bull Street, Calvary, Jasper Springs, Immanuel, Bonnybridge, and Isle of Hope. During mid-april, Georgia Baptist Mission Board Women s Ministry/WMU met on Jekyll Island for their Spring Event. This ministry was recipient of 554 hygiene kits (ditty bags) from churches around the state and $110. I am well-endowed for upcoming Christmas/Easter distribution. Hallelujah. These kits each contain practical items, a sweet, and a tract focused on the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, and His salvation. Christmas 2015 provided many doors of witness and ministry. I distributed many knit caps to those in deck work, along with the ditty bags, to hundreds. Bonnybridge BC gave a large donation of Ramen Noodles, popcorn, and cookies, which also gladdened the hearts of many. Several ships expressed great thanksgiving to me personally, including MAERSK WOLFSBURG, MSC LAURA, OSAKA EXPRESS, and MOL MISSION. The hit of the season was the 5 hand-lathed wooden jeeps made and shipped to me by Dan Owens of Albany, GA. I ask if someone has small children and then give them this gift which has JESUS LOVES ME burned on the hood. As the child plays with the jeep, this message is present. New Salem BC has an excellent outreach ministry with hand-carved wooden crosses packaged with the Ten Commandments, the Lord s Prayer, and the Beatitudes in a plastic bag. They have shared these with me and I gave one on September 30 th to a Chinese seaman off MSC KINGSTON, whom I had taken shopping. He has heard of Jesus, but knows little. As he struggles to read the Bible verses and look at the cross, he will learn more. 3. Verse of the year: By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:35 ESV 14

Savannah Baptist Assembly The Savannah Baptist Assembly has been a busy place this year. Along with the usual activities such as camps, church groups, and family reunions, we have also hosted volunteers who came especially to minister to the Assembly and the Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief Chain Saw Training. There were also renovations to the upstairs sleeping rooms in the big house and churches donated money toward a brand new lawn mower. We had an uninvited visitor in October. Hurricane Matthew came through and left a big mess. Several of our buildings are damaged and there are trees down all over the place. Activities at the Assembly have been suspended until it can be cleaned up and repaired so that all of our guests will have a safe place to come to. Please pray for the Savannah Baptist Assembly. We may be a little off our game but God still has big plans for us. 15

Armstrong Baptist Collegiate Ministries Tony Branham, Director A lot has happened since the Savannah Baptist Associational meeting in the fall of Several students served as short term missionaries in India during the Christmas break. Two teams served during spring break. One group assisted with Camp Jackie, which is a weekend camp experience for special needs children. At least one student changed majors as a result of this experience. Another group of 15 students were active with Georgia Mountain Resort ministries. The group assisted with trail ministry, did an afterschool program in a trailer park, taught classes in conjunction with the local High school, did some painting, and whatever else Keith Ivey needed the group to do. The BCM exceeded its goal of $5500 for BCM summer missions. Seven students went all around the world through BCM Send Me Now summer missions, representing Armstrong and the Lord Jesus. A number of salvations and lots of great stories of how God was at work around the world were the result. On the home front, an average of 100 people attended the weekly lunch program where students were challenged to grow in their faith. Thanks to our local churches, we had 27 lunches during the year. Fifty students were involved in discipleship where a high level of accountability was expected. Lots of weekly activities and fun events took place. A number of international events, fellowships, outreach activities, and intramural activities were a part of the overall plans for the year. Some students graduated and new leaders stepped in to fill their shoes. Discipleship continues to take place week to week. Students are being challenged to share their faith on campus. Learning how to live a life for Christ continues to be an important part of the ministry of the Armstrong BCM. 20

Disaster Relief With the onset of Hurricane Matthew on October 9, 2016, the Savannah Association became the command center for Disaster Relief. Because of this ministry, many people in Savannah and the surrounding areas received free tree removal. The many churches and businesses in the Savannah Community stepped out and donated time, money, and supplies to make sure that the Disaster Relief volunteers were housed and fed during the time they were here. During the weekend of October 21-23, there was a call for volunteers to help. Many Disaster Units from across the state joined us, including BSU students and many of you. Thank you for your willingness to work together in Christ s name. Statistics Volunteer Days 1194 (That s approximately 57 Disaster Relief volunteers for 21 days.) Tommy Pirtle reported the enrollment of messengers. There were 21 churches, 80 messengers, and 32 guests present. Rev. Albert Hill presented the 2016 budget. It was voted on and passed. Assembly committee members and Center trustees were presented and approved. Rev. Buddy Wasson presented a plaque to Rev. Albert Hill, stating appreciation for his faithful service this year as moderator. Bro. Albert thanked SBA for allowing him to serve. Rev. Buddy Wasson challenged the group about the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary extension. It may be moving its location in 6 to 9 months but we are not sure yet. We have Bachelor s and Master s Degree Programs. As in any new extension, we are in a 5 year probation period. We currently have 3 students for Leavell College. If we do not grow student-wise, we will not be able to continue. We have reached out and had radio advertisements. God wants us to pray for students. Rev. Wasson asked the group to commit to 30 days of prayer for the extension and that students would come. He mentioned that pastors of churches of under 250 in membership have access to a scholarship. He asked them to stand if they were willing to pray. Rev. Wasson prayed, thanking God for those who committed to 30 days of prayer. Bill Gammon gave presentations for VBS. Chevis Oaks and FBC Garden City went ahead of year before. Higher Ground, South Newington, and North Salem also received awards. One church hit it out of the box. Godley Station received a large painting as the Savannah Baptist Association achievement award. Bro. Bill challenged churches that VBS is greatest tool for reaching families. He is concerned to see reports with no salvations listed. Families are brought to you that need to hear about Jesus. Children hear so think about the families. Rev. Buddy Wasson recognized the new pastors of the Savannah Baptist Association. Three months ago, 13 churches were without pastors. Now there are 7. Welcome and we will help you any way we possibly can. New Pastors are: Rev. Phillip Campbell Windsor Forest Rev. Doug Cone Interim at Whitemarsh Matthew Gallant minister of music and youth South Newington Rev. Andy Hammack at Victory Dr. Gary Lewis at FBC Rincon Rev. Robby Norman Corinth Evan Powel youth at Immanuel 39

Rev. Jason Rowe at Bloomingdale Ethan Scott students at Woodlawn Rev. Albert Hill encouraged pastors to come to pastor s conferences on Mondays. The Commissioning Service for Stephanie Carr was started. Rev. Albert Hill, as Moderator of Savannah Baptist Association, presented Stephanie Carr as a candidate for commissioning. He stated that a Stewart must be found faithful. She is faithful and has a heart for God. Susan Bragg read the letter of commission from the SBC trustees, recommending Stephanie Carr to be commissioned. The vote was unanimous. Rev. Stan Stones spoke. He said that God has brought this center through so many things that could not have happened if it was not God s will. We believe that it is God s will that Stephanie Carr lead the center. Pam Crovatt read a letter from Beth Ann Williams, Ex. Director of state WMU. Johnny Bowen shared three points with Stephanie. This is the individual that God placed here to do the work of the Center. He quoted Hebrew 11:6. She is not here to please people, but to please God. God called and equipped her. He reminded her to always please and seek God. Look unto Jesus. In ministry there will be ups and downs. You must put your full trust in Him and allow Him to lead you. Don t you ever forget where you came from. We have a close tie because of where we are from. He had a hat from West Virginia. Frank Nuckolls, from GBC, brought greetings from Dr. J. Robert White. Thank you for missions to cooperative program. We come to set aside and commission Stephanie Carr. We set her apart to serve as a missionary in Savannah. We are all commissioned to be on mission to Christ as we go. We go in the power of Christ to make a difference with him. We are commissioned to work along beside her to make a difference in the lives of people here in Savannah. I challenge everyone to remember that we all are commissioned to work together in the mission field to honor and serve God as we go. Rev. Buddy Wasson charged the candidate. Why are we commissioning Stephanie Carr? IMB is no longer commissioning missionaries. Now GBC is making up the difference. We still want her to be commissioned. Bro. Buddy asked Stephanie to sit up front. He charged the candidate with Phil. 1:1 and shared things to be in the ministry. This is part of his B series. 1. Be faithful - Continue to be faithful to God, His calling, and your family. 2. Be friendly There will be times when you don t want to be friendly. Be friendly even when it is not easy. You are representing Christ, the Center, and the Association. 3. Be firm It is not always easy but sometimes you have to stand your ground. It s ok to say no. You will be pulled every which way if you did not. We will help you. 4. Be forgiving People will say or do things to hurt you. It is not easy to be forgiving but we have to. Don t let it get in your soul where you carry it around. 5. Be fresh Don t become stale. Have new energy and new thoughts. 6. Be fearless Sometimes it is easier to cower down but we have to stand. God s power will help you. His holy spirit protects us. 7. Be fervent Be on fire for Jesus Christ always. Don t let anything put that fire out. 8. Be yourself Don t let people change you. We love you the way you are. Rev. Wasson invited trustees and leadership of GBC and Association to come forward and pray with Stephanie. Rev. Wasson presented Mrs. Carr with a commissioning certificate, a Bible, & a gift card. 40
