10 SUSAN A. MILLER Susan Alice Waller Miller, wife of Rev. James H. Miller, Jr., died on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. Her memorial service was held at Westminster United Methodist Church, Kinston, NC, by the Reverends Richard Vaughan, Claude Wilson, and Haywood Smith. Internment was at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston. Susan was born in Lenoir County, NC, the older daughter of Roland Lee and Tiffany Stroud Waller. After graduating from Southwood School, she attended Atlantic Christian College (now Barton), majoring in religion and minoring in English. After some graduate work at UNC-Chapel Hill, she taught for several years in Gold Sand, NC and in Grifton, NC before becoming a director of Christian education, first at Trinity Methodist Church in Jacksonville, NC and then at Queen Street Methodist Church in Kinston. In 1950, she was part of a Methodist Youth Caravan to Europe that she remembered as a highlight of her career. It was also during her tenure at Queen Street that she met Jimmy when Bishop Garber sent him to Kinston to begin a new Methodist church on the west side of the city. After a brief courtship, they were married in 1952 at Queen Street by Jimmy s father, Rev. J. Herbert Miller, Sr. and Susan s boss, Rev. Marquis Lawrence. From Kinston, the Millers went on to serve appointments in Snow Hill (Calvary) where their two daughters, Susan and Patsy, were born, Goldsboro (St. Luke), Beaufort (Ann Street), New Bern (Centenary), the Fayetteville District, Raleigh (where Jimmy was executive director of the Conference COM), and Cary (First). At each appointment, Susan used her native talents, tremendous heart, sense of humor (crucial for a minister s spouse), and religious training to assist her husband in his ministry, serving in such roles as director of children s choirs and secretary. Since 1989, the Millers had enjoyed retirement in Lenoir County at Susan s homeplace. All of her life, Susan enjoyed the beauties of God s world, being taught to appreciate these things as a child. She taught her family the names of plants and birds, and her retirement was spent growing flowers, fruits, and vegetables, participating in the activities of the small church she had grown up in, Woodington United Methodist, feeding the birds that visited her yard, playing the piano and singing in the choir as long as she was able, enjoying cultural events with Jimmy, relishing the lives of her daughters, sons-inlaw, and grandchildren, and continuing to bless all with whom she came into contact. The tremendous scope of her influence became evident to her family at the time of her death, when people whose lives she had touched as youth in her MYF programs, children in her choirs, and adults in her neighborhoods and churches came forward with moving tributes. Susan was truly a child of God who met challenges with fight, humor, intelligence, and optimism. She is missed, but the alto section in Heaven is now a lot stronger. Susan Miller Brink 499
