1 Jesus proclaimed, If anyone thirst, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water. John 7:37-38 Swift Creek Presbyterian Church Volume 26 Issue 5 October November 2017 From the Pastor: Responsibilities of Membership Have you ever heard the saying, Membership has its privileges? Well, here s another saying. In the church membership has its responsibilities. Every year the leadership of our church is elected by the congregation. As I recently explained in our Inquirers class, the Presbyterian Church does not have a congregational form of government where all the members vote on every major decision of the church. Nor is a Presbyterian an Episcopal led church. The word Episcopal literally means Bishop. The Presbyterian Church is not governed by Bishops; we are governed by elected bodies. In the local church, the governing body is called the Session, and it consists of nine elders and I am the Moderator. The Diaconate oversees congregational care and supervises a lot of the work of our committees. And our Trustees oversee the upkeep, repair, and maintenance of our building and grounds. And it is the responsibility of the congregation to elect the men and women who serve in these offices. There will be a congregational meeting on Sunday October 1 at 12:00 noon after the 11:00 service. I encourage you to make every effort to come and participate in this meeting and fulfill your responsibility as a member of our church. Here are the nominees that will be presented by our Nominating Committee. Elders Susan Osborne Randy Hinson Chris Lacks Deacons Betsey McMahon Bea Sabo Rick Burfoot Amy Jordan Trustees Hogie Harrell Kim Ratliff Jay Carawan In Christ s Service, David

4 Page 4 October/November 2017 On a Mission We have selected March 17 to March 24 as the dates for our return mission trip to Haiti in 2018 (our third year in a row!). The team will provide an after school Vacation Bible School program for local Haitian school children, help families with light repairs on their homes and serve in other ways that materialize as the date approaches. The cost is approximately $1,500 (all inclusive). Scholarships are available so please keep that in mind as you consider joining the team on this exciting mission. If you have ever considered going on an international mission trip, this is a great trip to get your feet wet! We now have many people (young and more mature) that have gone on the trip; so there are plenty of folks around from which to ask questions if you have concerns or reservations. You can also call our trip coordinator, Mike Anderson, at The deadline for commitment is December 1 st. Please express your interest on the signup sheet in the Commons if you are remotely interested. We will be taking a local mission trip to Shalom Farms ( at the intersection of Route 288 and Robious Rd on October 28 th from 9 am 12 pm. The farm produces fruits and vegetables for the poor, including families in Richmond. The farm is run by groups of volunteers, who show up during their assigned times and perform various activities at the direction of the farm owners. It s a family-friendly event so please consider joining us signup sheets will be in the Commons shortly. Save the date of February 24, 2018 for our annual Stop Hunger Now (now called Rise Against Hunger) meal packaging event at the church. This will be our sixth year, and we will once again prepare over 25,000 meals that will be sent to some of the most needy children in the world. Again, if you have never been before, this is a fun, hands-on local missions project. The Missions Team met on September 24 th to discuss planning for the above events and to review a draft of the 2018 missions budget. The next missions meeting is December 10, 2018 and we would love to have anyone join us that has a heart for missions. Finally, a grateful thanks to the many people who volunteer weekly and monthly for our Friends Feeding Friends and Meals on Wheels programs. For information or interest in participating in any of our missions programs, please contact Greg Herceg at

6 Page 6 October/November 2017 Pastoral Nominating Committee (PNC) Update The PNC was nominated by the congregation on June 25 th and the 7 members are Craig Amis, Hilary Burgess, Herb Foster, Greg Herceg, Joy Moody, Traci Wakefield, and Anne Walker. Orientation for the group took place on July 23 rd as leadership at the Presbytery of the James (POJ) laid out the process that all POJ churches follow when seeking to find its next Installed Pastor. In a nutshell the process is as follows: 1) Prepare a Mission Study of our church (somewhat of a strategic plan) 2) Submit the Ministry Information Form (in essence, our job posting) 3) Receive and review candidates applications/resumes 4) Conduct site visits and interviews 5) Make offer and elect Installed Pastor The team s first official meeting was on September 5 th with meetings occurring about once per week. The immediate focus is on the preparation of the Mission Study, which serves as a tool to discern the ministry vision in which God is leading SCPC. It is from this vision that SCPC will identify the gifts and skills for the next Installed Pastor to lead us into that future. The PNC will be seeking input to complete the Mission Study, including a congregational survey to be distributed in the near future. The PNC asks for prayers and patience as it works through the process of calling the third Installed Pastor in SCPC s history. The process it is following is tried-and-true but it is not uncommon for it to take a year or more for a church to find the right fit. In the meantime, we are absolutely blessed to have an Interim Pastor of the quality of David. Contributed by Greg Herceg ANGEL TREE IS COMING! As the holiday season approaches, it is time to think about helping others, and Angel Tree is a wonderful opportunity to do that. For those of you who have not been at SCPC for past Christmas seasons, Angel Tree is a program of prison fellowship that affords us the chance to share Christ's love with the families of prisoners. This program connects parent(s) in prison with their children through the delivery of Christmas gifts on the parent's behalf. Angel Tree provides us with the names of local children, and each child receives two gifts. One is a clothing item and the other is a toy or fun item the child desires. We will need volunteers to purchase and wrap the gifts, deliver the gifts to the children, and/or work the Angel Tree table for one of two Sundays in November. More information about this volunteer opportunity will be coming soon. Please think about how you and your family may participate in Angel Tree and help children whose lives have been impacted by incarceration.
