1 Scottish Rite News For the Valley of Dallas July, Your Chairman attended the Anson Jones Award ceremony and Scholarship Banquet on June 3, 2006 at the Fort Worth Scottish Rite Bodies and heard the speech given by the Anson Jones Award recipient, Brother Robert Glasgow, 33 o. He was very impressed with the role Masons have played in forming and building this country and the great state of Texas. The significant contributions of Masons to the statehood of Texas is a story all Texas Masons should share with their friends and brethren.... I want to do three things during my remarks. First, I want to talk about the History of Masonry for those of you who are not Masons. Second, I want to talk about the contributions of Masons to this Nation and This State, to include the contributions of Anson Jones, the First Grand Master of Masons in Texas. WHAT IS MASONRY Masonry originated with the building of King Solomon s Temple in 993 B.C. Our Masonic history teaches us that the stone masons of that time had achieved a level of expertise in the application of architecture and geometry that produced the great Gothic cathedrals of the Middle Ages. 150,000 stone masons spent 7 years building King Solomon s Temple, and it is said that they were so organized there was never any controversy, contention, or discord among the workers at the Temple at any time during this 7 year period. King Solomon was the first Grand Master of these masons. And it is said that the building when completed, was fitted with such excise niceties, it resembled more the handiwork of the Supreme Architect of the Universe than that of human hands. As most people of this time were uneducated and could not read or write, the Masons developed a system of words and handshakes to identify themselves as they traveled around the different cities and countries working on temples and cathedrals. They were not a religion or a secret organization, but just a craft of skilled workers helping other workers advance in stone masonry. In the 17th century Freemasonry emerged in England as a fraternal order based on the principles and organization of the medieval stone masons crafts. At that point it was no longer a requirement that a person had to be a stone mason for membership. The present day Masons simply believe that there is or should be a code of conduct among men that make good men better, and creates an environment where all people can live together in peace, harmony, brotherly love and fellowship, as did the workers at King Solomon s Temple. One of the most important tenants in Masonry is charity. Our charitable activities are most notable, and it is estimated that Masons spend $3 million per day in charitable activities. You scholarship recipients are benefits of this charitable function of Masonry. We are not a religious organization. Although we do believe that to be a member you must have a belief in a deity. A particular religious faith is not a pre-requisite to become a Mason. Masonry is not a secret organization. We have private meetings among our members to take care of our Masonic business. There is simply no mystery about masonry, and our teachings, principals, goals, and charities are well known to all. We are simply a fraternal organization attempting to make ourselves, our members, our communities, our state and our country a better place for all. HOW MASONRY HAD ITS INFLUENCE ON THIS NATION The principles of Masonry are embedded in the creations of this Nation and this State. The United States Declaration of Independence contains these famous words: We Hold These Truths To Be Self-Evident, That All Men Are Created Equal, That They Are Endowed By Their Creator With Certain Inalienable Rights, That Among These Are Life, Liberty, And The Pursuit Of Happiness. That To Secure These Rights, Governments Are Instituted Among Men, Deriving Their Just Powers From the Consent Of The Governed. These are basic tenets of Masonry. Masons were the drafters of the Declaration of Independence. 54 men signed the Declaration of Independence...24 were lawyers; 11 were merchants; and 9 were farmers or plantation owners. These were not wild-eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. By their actions, our forefathers in Masonry gave us a free and independent America. Who were these great American Masons? They were George Washington (Grand Master of Virginia), Benjamin Franklin, (Grand Master of Pennsylvania), Paul Revere, (Grand Master of Massachuset) John Adams, John Hancock, and James Monroe, among many others. But other Masons had a hand in the success of this nation: a) 14 Presidents - George Washington through Gerald Ford. b) 42 Supreme Court Justices; c) Business leaders: Henry Ford and Andrew Mellon; d) Great Americans: Mark Twain, Charles Lindbergh, Gene Autry, Douglas MacArthur, John Glenn and many of the military leaders and political leaders. e) Black leaders: Prince Hall, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, Thurgood Marshall, and Booker T. Washington. f) Great Artists: Irving Berlin, Rudyard Kipling, Wolfgang Mozart, and John Philip Sousa. There are simply a lot of Masons who have developed the culture of this Country, in government, military, education, and the arts. How Masonry Had Its Influence On This State Anson Jones, the first Grand Master of Masons in Texas, and the last President of the Republic of Texas, is credited with being the father of Masonry in Texas. Twenty-Two Masons signed the Texas Declaration of Independence at Washington on the Brazos on March 2, The Preamble states: When a government has ceased to protect the lives, liberty and property of the people, from whom its legitimate powers are derived, and for the advancement of whose happiness it was instituted; and so far from being a guarantee for their inestimable and inalienable rights, becomes an instrument in the hands of evil rulers for their oppression. Again we see the masonic principals in this Declaration of Independence in Texas: These were the signers of this Texas Republic Declaration of Independence: Sam Houston - Anson Jones - Stephen F. Austin - William B. Travis - James Fannin - Thomas Rusk - Juan Seguin - Lorenzo de Zavala. By the time of annexation into the United States in 1846, Masons had served in nearly every major governmental post in the Republic of Texas. All of the Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the Republic of Texas were Masons. In 1844, two years before annexation, George K. Teulon, Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Texas, stated in a speech in Boston: Texas is emphatically a Masonic Country. Our national emblem, the Lone Star, was chosen from among the emblems selected by Freemasonry, to illustrate the moral virtues - it is a five-pointed star, and alludes to the Masonic five points of fellowship. James David Carter, a Masonic historian, writes: Freemasonry was without doubt the single most important social institution in early Texas. The first public building erected in a new community was the familiar two-story Masonic Lodge. The first floor ordinarily served as the school classroom and town meeting hall, while the lodge room occupied the upper floor. The Grand Lodge of Texas at one time was, and still may be, the 4th largest Masonic Grand Lodge in the World. There is simply no question that Masonic principles were the guiding light for the creators of this Great State. The questions we face today are: a) How do you keep a legacy alive; b) How do you preserve the Masonic traditions of independence, democracy, personal liberties, self-government, and free public school education. c) Are we as dedicated to our State and Nation as were the signers of both the U.S. and Texas Declarations of Independence. d) Are we willing to risk our lives and personal wealth to preserve the type of democracy created by our Masonic brothers who created this Nation and Country. Some of you in this audience can stand up and shout yes, as you have placed your life on the line for the service to your nation in World War II - Korea - Viet Nam - and the Middle East. One time in the history of this country there was a cold hard winter at a place called Valley Forge. There were a lot of farmers gathered there fighting a war against the greatest army in the world at the time, headed by General Cornwalish. All of the American soldiers were volunteers. They had no uniforms, no food, no cover from the harsh weather, and no ammunition. During the cold winter, human nature being what it is, the farmers wanted to go home to see their families, just to eat and get warm. A follow named Payne stood up in the midst of the army and said these famous words: Don t just be a summer time soldier - Don t only be a sunshine patriot. Are we going to follow the foot steps of our Masonic ancestors or are we going to be summertime soldiers and sunshine patriots to our country, our state, and our fraternity? That is my challenge to my Brother Masons... Thank You, Brother Glasgow

The exhibit is on display in the Hall of State at Fair Park. Audie Murphy is the centerpiece of a display featuring Texas Heroes. The Texas Heroes exhibit will be be displayed from Memorial Day through Labor Day, 2006, admission is free and the Historical Society expects more than 200,000 visitors to view the exhibit during that time. After the war s end, Murphy also received several French and Belgian decorations for valor. He fought for eight campaigns in Sicily, Italy, France and Germany, participated in two amphibious assaults, in Sciily and southern France, and was wounded three times. Walker, 33 o IGH, Executive Vice President and Administrator of Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, was the featured speaker at the Dallas Scottish Rite Library and Museum Scholarship Banquet in April. We presented $1, scholarships to 33 deserving young people that evening. At the banquet, Brother Walker offered to set up a luncheon and tour for those young people and their families. The Luncheon was held on Saturday, June 10, 2006 in a private dining room at the hospital with 8 of the students and their parents attending. After lunch, Brother Walker gave a short history of the hospital and showed a film of a group of patients on a ski trip to Winter Park, Colorado. All of the patients were missing at least one limb but learned to ski or snow board like pros. The film highlights the positive attitude TSRH instills in its patients. The students and families then were taken on a guided tour of the facilities including a full explanation of many of the programs, from how prosthetic devices are made, the difference between orthotics and prosthetics and a trip through the many laboratories including some of the learning disabilities labs and the game room. As always, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children served a gourmet meal and presented a highly professional approach to all present. It was a great day. It appears that at least one new Mason will be coming out of this group. Let s all do whatever we can to raise the awareness of Masonry, especially Scottish Rite Masonry to the public.
