4 P R ESIDENT In 2019 we will be celebrating 150 Years of women in mission in the United Methodist Church. We are looking forward to 150 more years of mission work being provided by the future United Methodist Women. However, in order to make sure that those women will be able to continue after we are gone, we need to see to it that the funds are there to provide for their mission work. The Legacy Fund was set up for that purpose. All United Methodist Women have been asked to contribute a gift of at least $18.69, monthly or annually as well as her pledge. Some have given as a unit and then there are those who have given individually. You can choose how you want to give and how often to the Legacy Fund. For the great work that was started back in 1869 and the great work that is still being done to help women, children and youth everywhere, we must do what we can to see that the mission work continues for years and years to come. Please feel free to ask a District or Conference Officer to come and speak to your ladies about the Legacy Fund. Thank you for supporting the Metro District with our hands on projects at our last two events. Your love for mission shows and we appreciate all you do. Joy and blessings. Michelene Mathews Vice President My beloved sisters, each year we should have great expectations for our Annual Meeting. Why? Our Annual Meeting is not just a business meeting. It is a time of celebration, fellowship, reunion and worship. We invite you to come and help us make this year s the best one yet. The registration form is in this newsletter. Our meeting is Saturday, August 27th. We will be hosted by our gracious sisters at Williamson s Chapel in Mooresville. Our theme is A Story To Tell. Our speaker this year is our conference president, Tonya Lanier. You don t want to miss her. She is always dynamic, insightful, and inspiring. Our scripture is Isaiah 30:21: Whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left, your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk in it. Our 150 year legacy is proof we ve listened for God s voice and we ve done our best to follow God s will. May we continue to be the hands and feet of Christ and by God s grace our story will continue for another 150 years! Your sister in Christ, Dawn Revere, Vice President

6 S ecretary How are you doing with keeping the records for your unit? Do you do the minutes as soon after your meeting as you can so it is still fresh in your mind? Always remember, you are keeping the history of your unit for future generations. Many units are getting their slate of officers together for next year. As soon as you have your election, please send me a copy of your new officers including their contact information. We need name, position, address, and addresses. We will then update the Metro District Database. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Hope to see many of you at the Metro District Annual Meeting on August 27th at Williamson s Chapel in Mooresville. If you need any help, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone or . Mary Jane Sutton Metro District Secretary gmasutton1@gmail.com (cell) Treasurer Remember the Metro District Annual Meeting is coming up in August - please mail me the list of attending names and one check made out to Metro District UMW by August 13th. 7 P rogram Resources Finished a book and not sure where to go next? Check out these 2 books from our reading list. Miss Brenda and the Loveladies by Brenda Spaun Nurturing for Community For Brenda Spahn, entrepreneur and businesswoman, wealth was a lifestyle until a brush with the law threatened to send her to prison. In those dark moments, Brenda made a promise to God. Spared incarceration, a renewed Brenda glimpsed into the lives of women serving time in one of the worst places in America the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women in Wetumpka, Alabama. What she saw prompted a God-inspired vision. With a heart to help and a will that couldn t be crushed, Brenda fought the system and overcame tremendous obstacles to take ex-cons into her own home and help them navigate the alien world of life on the outside. This is the story of Brenda s journey from rags to riches to redemption. It s the story of the first unlikely year of her Whole Way House and of the extraordinary lives of the first seven women who came to call her Miss Brenda. It s a story that testifies to the power of faith and how God changes hearts every day. Coffee, Tea and Holy Water by Amanda Hudson -- Education for Mission Coffee, Tea, and Holy Water takes the reader on an armchair tour of Christianity in our world, across borders and over continents. Amanda Hudson provides a personal touch with cultural curiosities, profound questions about the nature and practice of faith, as she travels to five countries: Brazil, Wales, Tanzania, China, and Honduras. Part reflection, part entertaining travelogue, Coffee Tea, and Holy Water explores everything from each culture s offer of hospitality to life in a Masaai boma. There are lessons to be learned from other countries that are not visible in our own culture, writes Hudson, Questions that are not our questions. Struggles that are not our normal struggles. And yet, when we look around the throne one day at the nations assembled there, instead of marveling at the diversity, I think we will actually be fascinated by what we all had in common. This is a book about the places we meet, what we share, how we can learn to cross borders (geographical, cultural, personal), and learning that the steps to do so make all the difference. Honest, witty, and thought-provoking, these stories come from a young woman raised in the South, who found herself wondering what normal Christianity looked like in other countries. Amanda Dyer 701 Wingard Rd.

8 S piritual Growth Hello Ladies I want to thank all of you who attended the 2016 Prayer Breakfast. It was a wonderful day and Tonya gave a great message. Cold Springs was such a gracious host. The food was amazing and the Ladies Ensemble was beyond any group I have heard recently. I want to thank all who helped in any way to make it a special day. I received 140 evaluations and they were mostly on the high end. In the future please fill out the evaluation sheets as they help to plan next year s event so we don t make the same mistakes. We had 226 people attend and 239 made reservations. Our next big event is the Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska June 10th and 11th. So make your reservations now. We need all of you there. I would like to give your units a LUV visit so give me a call or and I will see you soon. Love and Blessings, Shirley Hafey Spiritual Growth Coordinator Metro District H W C. sphafey@hotmail.com Membership, Nurture & Outreach Sisters! I am encouraging the Metro District Units to plan for a Mission Walk. Our overall number of walks and donations has been very low in the past. You can walk inside or outside. You can solicit sponsors and collect donations from your Sunday School Class, family, friends; not just the UMW members. All the donations go to mission. Jesus commanded us to minister to the needs of others. This is a great way to let Christ shine through us to others. Have you invited someone to your unit meetings, district or conference events? We have ladies in our churches, your co-workers, communities, families and friends who are not United Methodist Women. Because a lady is a member of the United Methodist Church does not mean she is a United Methodist Woman. They have to be invited! They have great ideas and some would like an opportunity to serve in our mission purpose. We have opportunities for all! We need to tell the story of our organization: where we have been and where we are going. What is our purpose and how do prospective members fit in. MOST IMPORTANT: TELL YOUR STORY! What does the purpose mean to you? How have you grown in your faith? Tell of your relationships and projects. Schedule a LUV with your Nurturing Partner. Remember the Feel the Love campaign ends August 24th. Get your name in the drawing for a nice gift at Conference Annual Meeting. WE are counted in-now let s count OTHERS in! 9 Social Action Aldersgate UM Church hosted the WNCC Domestic Violence Training in April. On this Saturday morning 50 participants listened to Julie Owens of Faith Trust Institute and other domestic violence survivors discuss its effects and how to move toward prevention. Let s test our domestic violence I.Q.: What are the signs of abuse? What are some of the safety issues? What are some of the religious issues? How should we respond? What is the value of the faith community in addressing domestic violence? The training and sharing from survivors was very moving. My sisters, we have much work to do. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it s the only thing that ever has. --- Margaret Mead Peace and love, Earonita F. Strong Coordinator for Social Action stronge@carolina.rr.com.

10 Mission, Education and Interpretation I am wearing a happy face and feeling quite proud to report that 379 health kits were collected at the Prayer Breakfast and delivered to the Mission Response Center in Terrell, N.C. on May 4th, Each kit is valued at $ each which makes our hands on mission project equal $ 4, from our district!! In addition, the Metro District collected $ to give to the Response Center for the purpose of delivering our health kits to those in need on the mission field. A most sincere thank you to everyone who participated and contributed. The results of our giving to missions was awesome and I am feeling so proud to be a United Methodist Woman. This extraordinary effort proves that we are putting our LOVE into action. We also will be collecting kits at the Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska on June The truck will be there around Noon and I am sure we will get lots of help from all the M E & I s in our district and conference. Mark your calendars to attend our 2016 Mission u on July 21 to July 24, 2016 at Pfeiffer University, Misenheimer Campus. Registration opened May 1, 2016 and all registrations must be postmarked by July 1st. Invite your friends. Mission u helps us prepare for our Mission Study for next year. We will choose from the following three topics: The Bible and Human Sexuality, Latin America or Climate Justice. Mission U has been described as some of the very best lay faith education offered by the United Methodist Church. Please remember and make note that the 2016 Conference Love Offering, A Gift to Undesignated Mission Giving, may be brought to our Annual Celebration at Lake Junaluska. As you know, our mission giving is a way for us as United Methodist Women to make our faith become truly alive!!
