We are pleased to present the Miss Pyramid Lake Pageant. This contest is open to all young women from age 18 to 25, who is a member of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe with a desire to possess the title in the coming year. This title is considered an elite honor to possess as it offers young women an opportunity to become engaged as a role model as well as a Pyramid Lake representative. This program is open to all young women who are presently active in academic pursuit, employed, athletics, and/or in the local powwow arena. You will have an opportunity to participate in application, family involvement, fund raising, presentation, and in the Pageant. Our goal is to promote youth wellness, becoming a positive role model, involved in community awareness, and cultural pride. Upon selection, it is recommended that you begin building a personal portfolio of your accomplishments during the Miss Pyramid Lake tenure. It will serve you in college application, resume support, as perhaps in scholarship application. A short application is required at this time. A complete application is required to enter into the Miss Pyramid Lake Double check and proof read all items. Return pages 2 and 5 with your essay and photograph. 3 Sacred Visions Powwow Royalty Code of Conduct and Expectations for Miss Pyramid Lake Please initial at each guideline upon selection. I will conduct myself at all times in a manner that will not jeopardize the reputation of the Sacred Visions Powwow, my tribal nation and the title in which I hold. I will dress in modest attire at all times for my appearances while representing the Sacred Visions Powwow. Provocative or untidy clothing is deemed unacceptable. I will not consume or have possession of any alcoholic beverages, tobacco, illegal drugs, and or inhalants at any time nor engage in any criminal activity during my tenure. I will be a positive role model for my family, my tribal communities, school, and continue to maintain my integrity and personal wellness. I am single and have no personal dependants (children). I will attend any scheduled Native American event, competition or social powwow, youth conferences in my proximity when able to do so. This includes attending all scheduled meetings, the Sacred Visions Powwow float at the Fernley 4 th of July Parade, the Sacred Visions Royalty Pageant, and the 2011 Sacred Visions Powwow (mandatory) or any Sacred Visions event that may require my presence. When I attend a powwow or other appropriate event during my tenure, I agree to do the following; 1. Pre-register my name and my Sacred Visions title before grand entry with the appropriate committees for recognition 2. Participate in the Grand Entries 3. Become well-versed in public speaking by introducing myself and announcing the 2011 Sacred Visions Powwow when called upon by the Master of Ceremony or Arena Director. initial I will respect the guidance and advisement of the SVP Royalty Committee and its coaches. As a student, I will submit a written essay detailing my accomplishments, my travels, academic endeavors, transcripts, and any other note worthy attributes upon request. I will meet the age as indicated by July 1, 2011 for the category I have selected. I may have the option to withdraw from the competition and agree to return all unsold raffle tickets and proceeds (money) to the Sacred Visions Powwow Royalty Committee. 3

4 I understand that Powwow Crowns are passed down annually. It will be returned to the Royalty Committee after the Fernley 4 th of July Parade to any general repairs and cleaning. I will allow the Committee to inspect the crown upon request. Failure to attend and participate in the Pageant, turn in raffle tickets and the money earned will result in automatic disqualification. Please initial at each guideline. Code of Conduct Penalties If the Crown is found to be damaged, for example, liquid saturation or irreparable damages, I will pay for a replacement. Replacement cost will be determined by the Sacred Vision Powwow Committee which may not exceed $ I understand if it is determined that I have violated the Sacred Visions Powwow Royalty Code of Conduct I will be subjected to coaching and enter into disciplinary status. Disciplinary Status 1. I understand if my conduct violates the Code of Conduct, I will address the issue in a timely manner. 2. Complaints are restricted only to the Code of Conduct; it must be written, dated, and signed to be effectively addressed within proper time constraint. 3. A coaching session will be scheduled whereas the SV Royalty representative will be required to attend. The complaint will be addressed and the representative will have ten business days to submit a written response. 4. Failing to attend a coaching session will result in forfeiture of title, crown and sash. 5. A final decision will be made within ten working days upon receiving representative response letter. If I feel that I am unable to fulfill my obligations or adhere to the Sacred Visions Powwow Royalty Code of Conduct, I will return Crown, sash five days following a final decision upon disciplinary status; or when I feel necessary. The Title, Crown and Sash will be presented to the First Runner-Up. 4

6 PAGEANT PREPARATION ESSAY*: An essay is required for all contestants in the Sacred Visions Powwow Royalty Pageant. Chose one open statement to answer: The importance of youth leadership or The challenges for young Native Americans in the twenty-first century. Reflect upon the effect Pyramid Lake. Your essay must be typed at 12 point using Times New Roman, double-spaced, a maximum of two hundred words using common writing technique. Your essay will be featured in the Sacred Visions Powwow program, a publication. Write clear and concise essay; it will make the best impression for you. Your essay will be due when application is submitted. SPEECH PRESENTATION: All contestants will give an introduction including your family history, and personal goal. Time limit: four minute minimum. A typed copy must be attached to application which will be included in a printed publication. VISUAL PRESENTATION: A standard tri-fold presentation board illustrating your family tree and history will be a requirement to enhance your presentation during the pageant. This visual will belong to you. ROYALTY QUESTIONS will be asked during the pageant. Avoid using I think answers. Answer by saying I believe by restating the question to emphasize your belief. TALENT/SKILL/DANCE DEMONSTRATION: You will be required to demonstrate your talent or skill. It may be anything you were taught as a youngster, something you recently learned, even demonstrating a beading technique, willow weaving, etc. PHOTOGRAPH*: Please attach a 4 x6 color photograph in dance regalia. JUDGING: Local tribal members will be selected to judge the Miss Pyramid Lake and the Sacred Visions Royalty contestants. They will be given a score card/sheet. RAFFLE TICKET SALES: All raffle tickets are property of the Sacred Visions Powwow Committee. Contestants will be issued 100 raffle tickets. Contestants must sell tickets at $1.00 each. Contestants are responsible for all tickets. IF tickets are lost, contestant assumes responsibility and held liable for the cost of tickets and/or money due. Once tickets are sold, the sold tickets and money must be turned in. Additional tickets will be available upon request. PARTICIPATION: For this portion, points will be given in select events but not limited to Pageant rehearsal, Sacred Visions fund raising events, decorating the Sacred Visions 4 th of July Parade Float, or decorating your own parade float for the Fernley 4 th of July Parade. 6
