11 11 of 21 pp. / doc. no (Spokane District Telegram Sept. 20, 1959) SAGLE We have been privileged to have the following guest speakers from Spokane: Bill Kuntz, Jack Wiedman, and Robert Wilkinson. Oliver Turnbull, an early resident of the Sagle community and a longtime member of the church, passed away at his home in Spokane, June 26, Funeral services were held in the Sagle Church with J. L. (Justin aka Jack) Verhei of Portland conducting the service with interment in the Westmond Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Vera, a daughter, two sons, and ten grandchildren. It was through Brother Turnbull s mother s efforts that the first missionary of the church came to the Sagle community. Elaine Melior and Dennis Cooper of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, were united in marriage at the Methodist Church in Bonners Ferry by V. A. Verhei in the presence of about one hundred relatives and friends. They will make their home at Sonoma, CA. On August 9, after sacrament service, our congregation drove to Elliot bay on Lake Pend Oreille where baptismal services were conducted for three young boys, a teenage girl, and the husband of one of our members. Tommy, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Stecher was baptized by his cousin, Elbert Gunter, and confirmed by Elbert and V. L. Gunter. Donnie, son of Brother and Sister Elbert Gunter, was baptized by his grandfather, V. L. Gunter, and confirmed by V. L. and Elbert Gunter. Bruce, son of Brother and Sister Herman Crabb, was baptized by his grandfather C. D. Crabb, and confirmed by C. D. Crabb and V. A. Verhei. Sherry Sutton was baptized by V. A. We are glad to welcome these new members to the branch (Spokane District Telegram January 1, 1960) SAGLE Delno Crabb, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Crabb, was blessed at the service on August 16, 1959, by V. L. Gunter and V. A. Verhei. On the afternoon of November 21, pastors and counselors met in conference at the Sagle church with seventeen in attendance. Supper was served by the branch Women s Department. A daughter, Sally Ann, was born November 20 to Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Taylor. Family night was observed at the Sagle church on Friday evening, November 11, with a potluck dinner followed by a program presented by the Zion s League and a social hour. *** Patriarch Harry L. Highland, Clinton MO, bestowed a patriarchal blessing on Wayne Louis Gunter on September 6, 1969, at the home of his son, Jerry Highland, in Spokane WA. (Spokane District Telegram Nov.-Dec. 1960) NEW GROUP ARRANGEMENTS [excerpt] In addition to the Spokane District s important missionary obligations in its three missions (Grangeville, Lewiston-Clarkston, and Pullman) and two groups (Bonners Ferry and Orofino), its members and officers should be directing their prayers and plans toward opening new fields. Spokane Valley and Sandpoint are first in the list of prospective areas. (Spokane District Telegram early 1961) DISTRICT RALLIES The pleasant and well-received program initiated last year of area rallies at which nearby groups,

12 12 of 21 pp. / doc. no missions, and branches could gather for a day of worship and fellowship, was carried out again this spring by unanimous request of the groups involved. On April 9, members of the Coeur d Alene, Sagle, and Vay branches met together at the Coeur d Alene church. Morning activities included a prayer service conducted by Sagle Pastor Venus Verhei, assisted by Coeur d Alene Pastor Philip Schierman, and a preaching service with District President Bob Wilkinson as speaker. After a potluck dinner, new color slides showing progress of construction of the Auditorium in Independence were displayed. Brief reviews were given by three district officers of the manner in which church and family should work together in the four aspects of ministry within their particular spheres of interest. Richard Curtis, Religious Education Director, Donna Folden, Music Director, and Tom Sylvester, Youth Leader, presented this overview class related to the rally theme The Seeds of Zion Are Zionic Families. (Spokane District Telegram August 1962) NEWS AROUND THE DISTRICT Moves in, out, and around the district have been almost too frequent to keep track of. A partial count follows. The Spokane Valley Mission regrets their loss of two fine, young families who are having to leave the district because of business transfers, the Glen Winships and Carl Scholtzs. At the same time the mission welcomes the Claude Dutys who have moved from Sagle. Soon on the way to Sagle will be Walter Duty of Spokane, recently graduated from Graceland College, who will be teaching in Sandpoint. We sincerely regret that Herman Crabb of Sagle will have to return to the Spokane Veterans Hospital for further leg surgery after some months of hospitalization for World War II injuries. Prayers on his behalf are solicited. (Spokane District Telegram February 1967) BRANCH COMMUNICATION MEDIA STARTED The new church year has seen some impressive steps taken in the Spokane District to improve communications and awareness of the total church program within branches. Two branches deserve commendation for the high quality of their new branch newspapers or newsletters. Sagle Branch and Lewis-Clark Branch have both started such publications under the direction of pastors Elbert Gunter and Frank Wilcox. Other branches and missions have relied on printed orders of service and pastors letters to provide written communications. Richard Curtis, branch president of Audubon Terrace, has started sending periodic pastoral letters to all members, weekly church programs with announcements of coming events to absent members, and a birthday card to each member at the time of his birthday. Southside Branch s pastor, Tom Sylvester, has published excellent pastoral letters and bulletins to keep in touch with all members (SDOY Newsletter April 1970) CHURCH MEMBER IS VICTIM IN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT Patrick Gunter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harley (Lois) Gunter, received a cut over one eye and other minor injuries when the car that he was driving was hit head-on by another vehicle just a little over a mile from his home in Sagle, Idaho. Three cars were involved in the accident which occurred just before Easter, but as far as we know (and this seems somewhat of a miracle from the condition the cars were in) no one was seriously hurt. (SDOY Newsletter July 1970) OSCAR CASE VISITS SPOKANE DISTRICT Brother Oscar and Sister Alta Case of
