Open communication with your child is a key factor in helping to keep him or her safe. It is important to start talking about safety matters with children from a young age. Let children know that you want them to tell you if anyone touches them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable or sends them inappropriate messages or pictures online. Role play different safety-related scenarios to help teach skills such as saying no, telling a trusted adult and resisting peer pressure. You can use our Family Discussion Cards to help jump-start these important conversations:

6 Weekly Readings Sunday July 15, 2018 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Amos 7: / Psalm 85: 9-10, 11-12, / Ephesians 1: 3-14 / Mark 6: 7-13 For today and the following six Sundays we read from Paul s Letter to the Ephesians, whose theme is captured by these words: In the Church Christ fulfills and reveals his own mystery as the purpose of God s plan: to unite all things in Christ (Ephesians 1: 10; Catechism of the Catholic Church, 772). Our reading today presents a beautiful hymn praising God the Father who has chosen us in Christ and blessed us in the Spirit with every spiritual blessing from all eternity. In the First Reading, God calls Amos from his ordinary life as a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores to become a prophet carrying God s Word to God s people. Amos task is to challenge the people to repent and return to their covenant relationship. In today s Gospel Jesus sends out the Apostles in pairs to share in his ministry of preaching and healing. Called to preach repentance, they have no visible means of support, but God s grace was with them as they drove out many demons and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. This is the first of two places in the New Testament where healing occurs in relation to anointing with oil. The Letter of James shows the early Church continuing Jesus instruction to heal those who are sick: Are there any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord (James 5: 13). Today the Church continues this instruction in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Like the prophet Amos and the Apostles, we have been chosen to be the Son s coworkers in continuing God s plan of bringing healing and grace to a broken world. 1.) To what is Paul referring when he says: In him we have redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions? 2.) What significance do you see in Amos being a shepherd? 3.) Like the Apostles in the Gospel, have you been able to step forward in total reliance upon Christ s grace? If not, how might you build the trust to do so? The Permanent Deacon... The Church is always seeking candidates to become permanent deacons. What are the requirements for a man who wants to become a Permanent Deacon? Applicants for the Diaconate should be men who already demonstrate: A dedication to revealing God s love A sense of self-confidence and self-esteem A trust and understanding of others An ability to lead with love and speak the truth A willingness to learn and grow A life of prayer The applicant must be no younger than 35 years of age at the time of ordination (and, therefore, no younger than 31 years of age at the time he begins his preparation). The younger man, who may have a wife and family, is especially urged to be very prudent in applying for the permanent Diaconate. The married man s first responsibilities are to his wife and family, and his work for the support of his family. Nothing not even the Diaconate must ever jeopardize his fulfillment of those responsibilities. An extensive, formal education is not required. An applicant does not need a college degree. It is expected that an interested applicant would have sufficient intellectual ability to fulfill the academic requirement. If the applicant is married he must be in a stable marriage and his request for admission must have the full and enthusiastic support of his wife and family. The applicant must be a man with a proven record of service to the Church. He must have a wholesome love for, and desire to serve, the Church under the direction of the bishop. Finally, even though others may recognize the qualities described above, or even though the suggestion to pursue the permanent diaconate may come from another, it is the individual candidate who must have a strong personal conviction of his call and abilities. No one should be ordained simply because someone else wishes it. In short, a man seeking admission to the office of deacon should truly desire that ministry, believe that God has called him, and have already demonstrated that he is a good Catholic Christian and leader.
