New Tribe Mission Outline Numbers Day 5: Cain and Abel Genesis 4:1-12 Open Air Campaigners Outline Lesson 12b Introduction: Children, how many of you have a brother or a sister? How many of you have ever had an argument with them? Today, we are going to learn about two brothers, and how one of them hated the other. Plus, we are going to learn how God provided a way of escape so we can be saved from our sins and go to heaven. Upper Left Hand Box H. I. Adam and Eve are now outside the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve decided to have children as God told them to do(genesis 1:28). The first child they had was a son and they named him Cain (Genesis 4:1-2). 1.Draw in Cain by the field. Later, they had another son in which they named Abel. 2.Draw in Abel by the sheep. Cain choose to be a farmer.. 3.Draw Cain with a rake or pitchfork. Abel chose to be shepherd. 4.Draw Abel with a shepherd s staff. 5.Draw in the legs and faces of the sheep. Here is a very important question, which one of these boys is sinful in the eyes of God (Wait for a response). They both are (Romans 5:12-18). Why? Because of the sin of Adam, every boy and girl is going to have a spiritual disease inside of them called sin. We are born with it, and only God has the remedy. So, when God looks at all of us sitting here today, how many of us are good, and how many of us are sinful? We are all sinful (Romans 3:23). None of us are righteous or good in the sight of God (Romans 3:10). The first step in understanding how to be forgiven of our sins is first, to

Lesson 13 B. acknowledge that before a holy and righteous God, we are guilty of breaking God s laws. We have all lied, stolen, disobeyed our parents, and been mean to other children. God sees all of this and says one day we will be judged for every sin we commit (Hebrews 9:27). As the boys grew, Adam and Eve must have taught Cain and Abel about the Garden of Eden and about how they ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. They must have told them about the animals being killed and God clothing them with the animal skins. It was the animal sacrifices that started teaching people about the penalty of sin. As they got older, there came a time for Cain and Abel to bring a sacrifice before God. A sacrifice is usually when an animal is killed and laid upon an altar. Why did God start asking people to have animal sacrifices? Because animal sacrifices are the visual reminder that a)we have sinned. b)the penalty for sin is death. c)we deserve to die. d)we need a substitute. e)the Lamb represents an innocent substitute. f)the Lamb also represents Jesus Christ, who would become our substitute. Upper Right Hand Box C. So when Cain and Abel brought their sacrifices to God, Cain, the oldest, went to God and put some of his fruits and vegetables on the altar 6.Draw in Cain by the left altar. 7.Draw in the vegetables on the altar. Abel came to God and brought an animal sacrifice to God (fat portions: Genesis 4:4) 8.Draw in Abel by the right altar. 9.Draw in the animal sacrifice on the altar. 10.Draw some blood coming down the altar. Not only did Abel bring a animal sacrifice, but the Bible says Abel came to God in faith, obeying God in giving Him the right sacrifice, and trusting in God for his provision and forgiveness (Hebrews 11:4). When God saw what the two boys brought as an offering to Him 11.Draw in the word God in the blue cloud.

Which boy and which sacrifice did God accept? (Wait for a response: Some will say Cain and some will say Abel) The Bible says God accepted Abel. D. 12. In the title write: God accepted Abel. If God accepted Abel, why? 13.Draw in rays of light coming down on Abel as sign of God s acceptance. God accepted Abel, not because he was good, or he was better than Cain, it was because Abel came to God in the right way. What was that right way? Well, I believe that since Abel gave an animal sacrifice, he must have realized that he was a sinner and deserved God s judgment. The animal sacrifice was Abel's way of saying, God, this should be me on the altar. I need a substitute. I need to be saved. Abel came believing in the promises of God and showed it by giving the right sacrifice. E. But what about Cain? Since God only accepted Abel s sacrifice, that means God rejected Cain s sacrifice. 14.Draw a red circle with a line through it over Cain s offering. Cain did not come in faith, and did not give God what was required. This could mean that Cain really didn t care about his sin and what God thought of him. This attitude is what most people have. Deep down they don t care about God. They only care about themselves and doing what they want to do. Is that you? In your heart are you like that? So, kids, I have a question for you. Which one are you? Are you like Cain or like Abel? Do you desire to be saved and have God accept you? Or are you like Cain, and deep down you do not really care about God. Only you can answer that question in your heart before God. Lower Left Hand Box F. Well, after God accepted Abel and not Cain, Cain got very mad. Why, because he was jealous. Have you ever been jealous? I know I have. People get jealous when someone else gets something they want. Did Cain have the right to be jealous? No. God actually told him, If you

G. do what is right, will you not be accepted? Genesis 4:7 But instead, Cain refused to listen to God and did something very bad. Cain said, Hey Abel, let s go out and walk around in this field. Genesis 4:8 Upper Triangle in the Lower Left Hand Box 15.Draw in Cain in Abel by each other. While they were together out in the field, Cain actually killed his brother Abel. 16.Draw Cain killing Abel. What a terrible thing Cain did! This was the first murder in all of history. Do you think God let this go by? No, God came to Cain, just like he did to Adam when he sinned and said, Where is your brother Abel? (Genesis 4:9) 17.Draw in the word God in the blue cloud. 18.Draw in the arrow facing toward Cain. What did Cain say? Did he admit his sin and fall on his knees and beg God for a second chance? No. 19.Draw in Cain with his hand up towards God. Cain responded to God and said, Who am I, do I have to be looking out for Abel all the time? Why should I care? (Genesis 4:9b). What do you think this kind of answer was? Humble, or arrogant? Yes, it was very arrogant and sinful. God said to him, What have you done? Listen! Your brother s blood cries out to me from the ground. Genesis 4:10 20.Draw in the blood on the grass. Children, nothing is hidden from God s sight (Hebrews 4:13). One day if you do get saved from your sins, you will stand before God and He will expose everything you have done. And then you will be thrown into the Lake of Fire forever (Revelation 20:11-15). How do you know you are guilty? First, let s review What is sin?

Sin is anything we do that God says in wrong (1 John 3:4). Now kids, what did God say was the punishment for disobeying Him? (Wait for a response) Yes, that s right. Death. Kids, when you do something wrong at home, you might get yelled at, sent to your room, or have the t.v. taken away. But when we sin against God, it is very serious. If you disobey your teacher that is serious. If you disobey your principal at school that is serious. If we were to disobey a police officer, we think of that as being more serious. How much more serious is it when we rebel against God s authority. And because God is the Creator, God told Adam and Eve that their punishment was death. Kids, how many bad things did Adam and Eve do to deserve the punishment of death? (Wait for an answer) They only did one sin. This is very important to understand. Remember what I said in the beginning - that to go to heaven you have to be perfect. Well, like Adam and Eve, it only takes one sin to keep us out of heaven. Let s all take a test. How many of you have ever told a lie? Raise your hands (Wait for them to all raise their hands. If someone doesn t raise their hand, say, How come you are not raising your hand, I think your lying right now. Smile as you say this.) If you would be honest kids, you would admit you have lied more than one time. Probably many, many times. Here is another one How many of you have disobeyed your mother (Wait for them to raise their hands)? Disobeying your mother is like when she asked you to do something and you don t do it. If you have been punishment by your mother, you know you have not always obeyed her. Here is another one How many of you have ever been mean to another kid, like someone at school or your brother or sister (Wait for them to raise their hands)? Here s the point kids, Adam and Eve only disobeyed God one time and they were given the punishment of death. He have all admitted here that we have sinned once, twice and even three or more times. Just like Adam and Eve got in trouble with God, we are in trouble with God. This is why people die, because the penalty of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Adam and Eve were now separated from God and someday their body would die, and their soul would go to hell.

Special note: Don t be afraid to tell children the truth about their sin and the punishment for sin. Without this bad news, the good news of Christ s death won t make sense. I have never seen a kid freak out when they are confronted with sin, death, and hell. It is often the very opposite. Children either don t understand yet, don t think they are that bad of a person, or they honestly do not care. It is rare if a child hears this message and wants honestly to be saved from their sins. Just like Adam and Eve sinned and were separated from God and deserved to die and then be in hell, we too have sinned and will get the same punishment from God. Right now, you are separated from God and if you died without having your sins forgiven, you would be in hell forever. Is there any hope for forgiveness? Is there a way to be saved? Thankfully, yes there is! Do we have to bring a lamb like Abel did? No. God has already provided the lamb for us! Who is this lamb who came to die in my place? First, let s understand this The only way to be forgiven is for someone to be punished for all the bad things we have done. Literally, someone has to die for us. But here s the problem, can I die for you (Point to a child)? The answer is no. I can t die for you because I have sinned too. I deserve to die for my own sins. Well, can you die for me (Point to another child)? Again, the answer is no. Why? Because you have disobeyed God and deserve to be punished too. What we need is someone who has never sinned. Not even once! Does anyone here know anyone like that (Wait for a response)? Children, the only perfect one is God. Only He could die for us. But, do you think that because we have rebelled against God He would die for us? Well, kids, here is what is called the gospel message or good news!! The Bible says, For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son John 3:16 What this means is God is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God is Spirit and we cannot touch or see him. But God did the miraculous and came down to earth and gave Himself a human body. Literally, God took on flesh and bone. (John 1:1-3, 14). God can do this because He can do anything (Luke 1:37)! The human name God gave Himself is Jesus Christ (Luke 2:11, Matthew 1:21, Mark 1:1).

To prove Jesus was God, Jesus performed some awesome miracles like rising children and adults from the dead (Mark 5:35-43, John 11). Jesus did public ministry for three years, and at the age of thirty-three, Jesus knew it was time to do what he came to accomplish. People made up lies about Jesus and had Him arrested. They decided He should die and took Him outside of a city called Jerusalem to have him crucified. 21. Draw the cross. Crucifixion is a horrible way to die. Romans soldiers actually took Jesus and hung him on the cross. 22.Draw Jesus on the cross. Then they took large nails, and nailed the nails through his hands and through his feet. 23.Draw the nails by the hands and feet. And for six hours Jesus was nailed to the cross, suffering and dying. Why would Jesus the Son of God allow this to happen to Him? The reason is that God came to earth to take the punishment we deserve on Himself. This is the only way God could save us. The only way God could forgive us was if someone died in our place. The Bible says, Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. Hebrews 9:22. Therefore, when Jesus died, he bled and suffered in our place. 24.Draw in the blood dripping down from his hands and feet (A very powerful effect). The Bible says clearly, But God demonstrates his own love for us in this; while we were still sinners Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 Kids, I have a question for you to help you better understand what Jesus did for us. What do you call it when someone comes into your classroom and takes your teacher s place (Wait for a response)? Yes, that s right. It s called a substitute. A substitute is someone who takes the place of another. In this place, Jesus is our substitute. He died in our place. He was innocent. We are guilty. Instead of us dying, Christ died for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3). After six hours, Christ died and they took him off the cross. 25.Draw over the body of Christ on the cross with the black paint to make the cross beams look thicker, making it look like the body of Jesus is gone.

After they took Jesus down from the cross, they laid His body in a tomb. But the story doesn t end here. After three days, Jesus came out of the tomb and was alive again! Jesus rose from the dead! 26. Draw yellow lines coming out of the tomb representing light. 27. Draw the arrow coming out of tomb pointing towards heaven. And then, after forty days of being on the earth and showing his wounds to his friends, Jesus went back up into heaven to be with God the Father, and He is still there today. Well, kids, what does this mean for us today? And how can we be with God and go to heaven? God sees our hearts and he knows what we think and believe. We need to put our faith or trust in Jesus as the Son of God who died for our sins, rose from the dead, and is the only one who can save us from sin, death, and hell. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him, will not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16 What are you trusting in today to go to heaven? Remember, are you like Cain or like Abel. Cain is in hell. Abel is in heaven with Jesus Christ forever. Do you believe that you are a good person, or that you have not done that many bad things? If you are, then you are trusting in yourself. Today, stop trusting in yourself and realize you need to be saved from your sins, and put your trust in Jesus Christ today as your Savior. When you do that, Jesus will come into your life and forgive all your sins. Invitation: Kids, I am going to give you an opportunity to talk to Jesus about your sins just like the man did that was hanging on the cross next to Jesus. The Bible promises that when you talk to God, he hears everything you say. You can talk to God out loud or in your heart silently. Right now, I am going to give you an opportunity to talk to God in your hearts. Tell Jesus who you believe He is, and what you want Him to do for you. Do you like your sins, and want to keep living in disobedience to God, or do you want to be saved from your sins and have Jesus come into your life? Just like the man on the cross, why don t you talk to Jesus in your

own words, and trust in Him as your Savior. Let s all close our eyes and bow our heads and I will give you a minute of silence. Wait for a minute or two, or until you see kids opening their eyes and looking around. Close in prayer with something like this Dear Jesus, we thank you today for teaching us about who you are and what you have done for us. Continue to help these boys and girls understand how you died for their sins and rose from the dead so they can go to heaven. Thank you for your love for us and please watch over their lives. In Jesus name, amen. Tell the kids that if they have questions about anything you said, they can go and see the appointed counselors to talk about Jesus with them. Questions to ask children when they come for counseling 1.What made you come over and want to talk to me today? 2.What did you pray to Jesus when everyone was quiet? If you are not sure if the child understands, you can ask 1.Do you believe in God? 2.Do you believe in heaven? 3.How do you hope to get there? If the child looks confused or doesn t know what to say, that s okay because the gospel message is like a seed that needs to be planted and watered. Many times when children hear the gospel it is the first time. So, the child only caught some of the truth that was taught. Pray for the child that they will hear the gospel again in the future and better understand. If the child gives a good works answer like: I told God I wanted to do better, or I told God I m going to be nice to my Mom or brother or sister, simply say, That was great that you prayed to God today. However, I think I can better help you understand how to go to heaven. At this point use the wordless book you have been trained in or go over the drawing with the child. May God bless you in your evangelistic service for Him. Resources:
