SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETTER.iOWME XVI,No. JANUARY, 98 PAGE PRESIDENT'S PAGE GLENN WHITECOTTEN I have been in correspondence with our First Vice President, Ken Tiffin, and our Treasurer, Bey-Jean Haner, regarding the financi.a situation of the Kindred. Coone John Soues' bequest came to $0,0.00. The receipts from the sae of Mayfower Famiies Thro h Five Generations Voume Three George Soue, has come to neary, Thus, the Kindred has witnessed a significant financia eap in the ast two years. Ken Tiffin and Bey Jean Haner are working to invest these funds to advantage and this wi be presented more competey in a subsequent Newseer. Coone John's bequest was, of course, most generous. We, therefore, are indebted to him in yet another way. His thoughtfuness has given the Kindred a sizeabe financia boost. We owe a debt of gratitude not ony to Coone John, but to our Soue Kindred Historian, Dr. ton Terry, the joint authors of Voume Three. I reca their presentation at the 978 Pymouth Reunion at which they gave the copyriht to Voume Three to Soue Kindred in America, Inc. and to the Genera Society of Mayfower Descendants. Their foresight has added immeasuraby to the continuance of this organization, not ony in the ream of geneaogica information, but in terms of financia we-being. For many years, one of our goas has been to present a schoarship. We have a schoarship fund, and thanks to the above named gentemen, it. is growing. The presentation of a schoarship is costy; in addition, the procedures for making awards is a very compicated and deicate process. It is tci be hoped that the methodoogy for awarding schoarships wi be deveoped in time to be presented to the members of the Kindred who wi be present at the 98 reunion. The Cincinnati Reunion - 9 Juy - August 98. I encourage a of you to came Linda Soue Preston has vounteered to be our host, and I have no doubt that this wi be one of the best reunions that the Kindred has ever had -- and there have been some grand reunions in the past. The ocation has the advantage of being centray ocated. Pease mark your caendars NOW and pan to aend. I woud ike to thank a of members of the Kindred who have served as officers. This is a vounteer organization and without the peope who have served in the past, we coud not have continued. In particuar I woud ike to thank our Past President, Fred Soues, of Waco, Texas. Fred has done a superb job for the Kindred; he has twice served as president now on two separate occassions, and in addition he has been our pubisher for many years. Thanks, Fred I

SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETTER VOLUME XVI,No. JANUARY, 98 PAGE The foowing account was taken from the famiy records of;,, Dorothea Wihem Centervie, Massachuses In 678, John Soue married a second wife, another Duxbury neighbor. She was born Esther Nash, daughter of Lt. Samue Nash, and she was the widow of Samue Sampson of Duxbury. She had two young sons, (and two daughters perhaps areadymarried-?. Samue Sampson had been kied in King Phiip's War. Esther, born in 60 was just 6 years od. John and Esther had three sons, Joseph, Joshua, and Josiah, born i n 679, 68, and 68 respectivey. Baby Josiah was our ancestor. Before he came aong, Pigrim George and his good wife, Mary, had both died. He and his own ie brothers never remembered their grandfather as their oder brothers did, and they must often have asked for the taes he had tod of the hard first years, and the ong voyage of the Mayfower. I have found no authoritative ist of John Soue's chidren in t he two sources I have at hand.. Winsor's Hi story of Duxbury, 89, and Ridon's "Soue Famiy", 96. Winsor' s ist is obviousy incompete and inaccurate as is much of his geneaogica materia. Ridon has gathered a great dea of data, without critica anaysis, or reconciing divergent statement s. Thus he says on p. 5, that Joshua was the ony chid of John and Esther Soue, and on p., he a ssigns Josiah, b. 68, to Rebecca who died before i 678. Then on p. 97, he gives another ist of John 's chidren, incuding some not mentioned in the first ist. On p. 0 he quotes from town records, deeds proving John had sons Aaron, Benjamin, James, and John. In these confusing statements certain dates stand out as proved ' definite records: marriage of John Soue and Esther Sampson in 678, births of Joseph, Joshua, and Josiah; and some dates of the oder chidren. On this basis, I have made the f oowing ist -- to which I sha hod unti I find documented corrections. Chidren of John Soue by first-wife, Rebecca Simmons: Aaron, b. 65/, m. 13 SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETTER VOLUME XVI ;No.. JANUARY, i98 PAGE Wihem records, cont'd John and Esther Soue were married in 678, and seed in. the od house in' Duxbury. I ndeed, it is ikey that John had aready been iving there some time. Mary Becke Soue, the Worcestershire ass who had crossed the ocean more than fifty years before to marry her chidhood sweetheart, had died the year before. Pigrim George Soue, nearing 80, and caing himsef "very aged", was ::;ti no doubt head of the househod, enjoying again his precious books, and taking'.in tere st in the doings of his grandchidren. That his son and aughter-in-aw gave him oving Gctre,, he wrote in his wi, for a to see, and know his appreciativeness. George Soue died in amost the ast of the Mayfower company. He was aid to rest among his od friends and neighbors, but the site of that eariest burying ground we do not know for sure. The house was overfowing with chidren, especiay if the new wife brought her Sampson boys aong with her, as is ikey. They began to set out for themseves John Soue gave his boys and-- the girs married. John himsef was busy with his own farm, and with t he civic duties he was given from time to time. He may have carried on his trade of taior, if the one reference I have fond to this is correct. In 6, young Zachariah joined in the expedition to Canada ed by Sir Wiiam Phipps, and died there -- repeating the story of the oder Zachary, his father (or unce who had perished i n the earier Canada expedition. Ony young Zachary was unmarried, and eft no one to foow i n his f ootsteps. When the new century began, in 700, John and Esther Soue must have counted themseves fortunate indeed. He was 70 that year, and she was 6. Their three sons - - now 8, 9, and years od -- ived at home and neped with a the farm wor k, hunti ng, fishing, cearing new and. Best of a they oved boats, and were most often to be found at the shore or out on the water. The oder chidren were scaered by now, married, and in home s of their own. Rache had moved to Middeboro, but t he other girs, Rebecca and Sarah, ived in Duxbury and coud bring their chidren to see the grandparents fairy often. Aaron and his wife, Mary, were iving i n Marshfied, James and John had removed to Middeboro, and both had married Middeboro girs, Benjamin had gone to Pympton. His wife, Sarah Standish, was a granddaughter both of the od Captain of Pymouth and of John Aden. Ony Moses was not yet married, though he was courting Mercy Southworth, and was to marry her the next year. Moses was one of the qui et, industrious sort -- perhaps ike his grandfather Simmons for whom he was named. He became a weathy man and an extensive and owner, with hodings in other towns, even in the far off district of Maine. This and passed to his sons, who seed there, and founded one Maine branch of the Soue famiy. John Soue at 70 was a vigorous an, sti carrying his share of the husbandman's daiy hard work. He woud have been of medium height, stockiy buit, with striaght eyebrows, deepset bue eyes, and a shock of shining white hair. He was outgoing and friendy, fond of chidren, and fu of fun. Perhaps he'd been a good dea of a tease when he was younger. He had a cutivated mind, and probaby enjoyed as much as anything a good ive argument with his sons, or with his thoughtfu neighbors. He was respected by his feow citizens for his integrity, and fairness, so that he became an arbitrator in disputes, executor of wis, guardian of minor chidren.

SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETTER VOLUME XVI,No. JANUARY, 98 PAGE Wibem records, cont d sther, his good wife and companion, woud hve. been the serene kind, with smooth hair, smiing eyes, and a firm chin. She was a knowedgabe housewife, and a wise mother. She was inteigent enough t o share in her husband' s ove of reading - perhaps she coud read hersef though I think she woud have preferred his reading aoud. They knew how to share their prosperity, and kept their home the true center for a the chidren and grandchidren. John Soue died in 707. He had aready given his sons their portions of the estat e during his ifetime. She is buried i n the od cemetery between Duxbury and Pymouth, so near the fence that one has t o go outside the cemetery to read the inscription. Here yes the Body of Mrs. Esther Sou, wife of Mr. John Soue, who died Sept. ye, aged years, 6 mos. 6 days. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Josiah Soue 68 - The three youngest sons of John and Esther Soue must be considered as a unit. To a intents and purposes t hey were tripets. They came into the word withii three year s, and they went out of it, eighty-odd years ater, within three years and a fraction more. For both parents they constituted a sort of second famiy. This was a second marriage for both of them, and each had a set of near y grown, or indeed quite grown up, chidren. Joseph Sou e, b. Juy, 679, d. Juy,, m. Mary, abt. 70. Joshua Soue, b. Oct, 68, d. May 9, 7, m. Joanna Studey, abt. 70. Josiah Soue, b. 68, d. June 5,, m. Lydia Deano, May 5, 70. Coonia chidhoods seem to have varied ite between seements or generations. Besides going to schoo, the boys woud have heped their father on his farm - broad and fertie acres now, not the back-breaking work of cearing vi rgin forest or rock-strewn fieds. They woud have found penty of comrades among the youth growing up in Duxbury, and p enty of interests in the surrounding woods, in visits to neighbor ing town, and most of a, in and on the water. Love of the sea was strong in these three boys. In manhood, they bui t up a business in ship buiding, navigation, and merchandizi ng. They buit the "Soue Feet", incuding two staunch ships t he -Seafower" and the "Dophin", in which they went bank f.ishing, and whae hunting in the North. They were deaers in furs, making purchases from the I ndians in the backwoods of Maine. "My records prove thi ", Ridon says.

SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETTER VOLUME XVI,No. JANTJARY, 9 8 PAGE,5 Wihem records cont' d "The Soue shipyard", he continues, ''was on the west shore of the 'Nook',.and was one of the first, if not the first, in New Engand Whie running a common store, as neary a eary eraft:s did, he (Joshua Soue sod ardent spirits and kept it in stock for his ship carpenters. Perhaps took a sniff himsef to strengthen his oins and stimuate his buckram witha. As Parson Smith wrote, 'a good man, errors excepted."' This was wrien of Joshua, but. might have stood for any one of the three brothers. "When he died", Ridon concudes, "he was buried near the shore where the wid waves roar. " Joshua seems to have been the most prominent of the three men, perhaps he was the most aggressive. Lacking the distinction of being either the edest or the youngest of the "tripets", he had to assert himsef somehow, nd became their eader. At east his name appears in Wi nsor's History in severa connections, his younger and oder brothers scarcey at a. Joshua was a seectman in 7 and again in 78. But ceary a three were in the shipping business together, and a three remained ife-time citizens of Duxbury. Joseph seems to have been the quiet one, perhaps a ie overwhemed by th boisterous brothe rs who so soon pushed him out of his crade. He may have been the studious one, sharing the bookish eanings of his father and grandfather.' He was the ony one of the three whom that Pigrim grandfather ever saw, and even he woud not have remembered the od man. J osiah,i think of as one of the extrovert Soues -- not the east overawed by studious Joseph or by obstreperous Joshua, he woud have hed his own with both. In 70, when the boys were 9,0, and years od, their fathef, John, deeded to them a his ands in Duxbury, and more in other towns. None of the boys were married then, and the deed provided that if either of them died the other two shoud inherit his share. John Soue had aready given ands to his oder sons, who were by this time scaered to other towns of the Od Coony. Aaron, the odest, was in Marshfied. He had married Mary Wadsworth of Duxbury, and are ady (70 had severa sma chidren. James and John had moved to Middeboro, and married there. Benjamin, after a short period in Middeboro, had seed in P\ympton. He had married Sarah Standish, granddaughter of both Mies Standish and John Aden. Benjamin and Sarah founded what Ridon cas the Pympton branch of the famiy. Ony Moses of this oder batch of.john Soue's chidren was sti in Duxbury. He married in 70, Mercy Southworth, daughter of Edward. They were both a year or two past 0 -- a ate age for a coonia marriage. One wonders about their courtship ong drawn out? Late booming? Was she busy at home'? Was he sow-moving ike his Waoon grandfather Simmons, for whom he was named? Lie is known about Moses, but he was a saior and trader, and eventuay moved to Maine, where his sons had preceded him. This was after Mercy's death, and he had married a second wife. The Soue sisters had aso married and gone, but not so far. On their father's death, intestate, in 707, they put in a petition for some of his property and got it. J osiah and Joshua marri ed i n Joseph a i e ater about 70. Characteristicay for quiet Joseph, we know ony the first name of his wife, Mary, no surname, no dates.. They had a famiy of five daughters.

SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETTER VOLUME XVI,No. JANUARY, 9 8 PAGE 6 Wihem Records cont'd Joshua's wife was Joanna Studey, of whose fqrbears I know nothing, but her name sounds ike the vigorods, handsone executive sort of woman Joshua shoud have married. They had a famiy of nine, five boys and four girs, and Ridon is fu of prowess of their descendants. Josiah, on May, 70, married Lydia Deano of the prominent and aristrocratic Deano famiy. She had dark hair and eyes, a sim gracefu figure, and an air of distinction and a mind of her own. She brought a strain of French bood into the Soue famiy -- one wonders where it came out in her descendants. She and Josiah had six chi dren, four boys and two girs. There were, according to Winsor: Jonathan, b. June 705, d. Apr 7 Mary, b. 5 Dec 706 Abisha, b. 5 Nov 708,d. Nov 778 Micah, b. Ap r. 7, d. Nov 778 Nathanie, b. Nov 7 Lydia, b. Oct 79 Ony the first two were born before the death of their grandfather, John Soue, but a were grown up before grandmother Esther's death in. They had a aained midde age before either Josiah or Lydia died. They died within a year of each other, Lydia on November,, at the age of 8, and Josiah on J-ne 5, at the age of 8. The Duxbury of the "tripets" day, was peacefu and prosperous. It was a thriving town, and a port of some consequence. The disappointment of being joined to Massachuses instead of continuing as Pymouth Coony with a charter of their own had ong since been forgoen. Except for mention of companies of miitia maintained, Winsor's History give practicay no data for this whoe haf century. The first rumbins of troube with Engand did not begin ti the "tripets" were od men, and woud have affected them not at a. It was the next two generations who woud beai the brunt of that. Their ifetime was devoted to peacefu progress, to extending Duxbury's maritime industries, and to trading for furs and t i mber in the District of Maine. In this period, many Duxbury men, incuding some of the Soue sons, cousins, and neighb'ors removed to Maine and founded towns and famiies there. It is peasant to think of the three od brothers rounding out their ives together. The yeow haired babies had become, after the mid-century, three white haired od men. Their bue eyes were if anything buer from their sea faring. They were sti hae and vigorous, sti strong in wi and in opinions, sti arguing among themseves over the business, and with a and sundry on maers of genera interest. They were known for integrity, and respected for uprightness. Joseph died first, on Juy 86, acking barey three weeks of being 8 years od. Josiah died about a year ater, 5 June, at the age of 8. Then Joshua, very much the patriarch at 85 and a haf, died 9 May 7. We hope his brothers were buried near him by the shore.

Samue was aso made residuary egatee and soe' executor. However, Samue died in 8, aet., ess than a year after his grandfather --"in Caroina" according to Winsor, so he too may have been in the sefaring business. Samue had presented his grandfather's wi for probate, but there was some dispute among the heirs, and the court appointed persons "to give advice." They (names not given in Ridon, p. 97 report that "having met at the house that Joseph and Samue Soue now dwe in, and heard the parties and after consideration thereon do advise in order for an amicabe agreement among said heirs, viz.: that a the ands and meadows that are given to Joshua and Samue be equay divided between them." Does this mean Joshua, who is not mentioned in the wi (Ridon, p. 96, or Joseph? Evidenty the Soue quick temper and some sense of sight was at work here. And that eaves scouting eaders in a bind, says Bruce Benap, president of the Piteas Area Counci. They can hang onto Soue and not have money to buid a camp on amost,00 acres of secuded and north of Pineas, or ose Soue and have a jump on buiding the new camp. It doesn't ook good for Camp Soue, he admits. Benap says the 00 acres of Camp Soue,. ocated just north of DunE--din, ong has been a favorite weekend arid summer retreat. Its centra ocation to Pineas cities provides ready access for scouts headed to the woods for merit badge training. '.... But at the same time, urban spraw is cosing in on the camp,_ he says, H9uses aready dot the far side.'of the ake and the sounds of city ife can be heard throughout be camp. The DiePoder property sits in the Weeki Wachee Spring area-55 mies removed from P ineas scouts.
