1 december 2017 C O A S T S I D E L U T H E R A N C H U R C H Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Hebrews13:1-3 As Christmas approaches, I can t help but think about angels or those messengers from the Beloved revealing Divine Presence, call, and hospitality. It s powerful to hear ways in which people touch one another like the gentle caring man who tended Marge McConn s body on the morning she died, all the while quietly singing Amazing Grace and other hymns. I imagine she loved it! Her daughters did! Together they ALL sang This Little Light of Mine as the sun rose and her body was carried out. What a simple yet powerful gesture. I don t think that memory will ever be forgotten. Nor will the many ways in which angels have been at work here at CLC. Some gave abundantly to Adopt a Family; others donated money so gift cards could be purchased for the children and the homeless who come to the community breakfast. Then there was the annual Budget Meeting where you were asked to consider, in conjunction with Abundant Grace Coastside Worker, hosting the homeless on rainy days this Winter in the FOG house. You went one step further: you voted to host the Rainy Day Project on site in the West Wing when possible in order to provide a comfortable and warm respite. What a gift this congregation continues to be in the name of Jesus providing hospitality, mercy, and love! As you are angels for those in need, you too will experience the angel in our midst in each stranger who often becomes a friend, no matter how brief the encounter. It s never a one way street! What s Inside? 1. Pastor s Greeting 2. October Treasurer Report and 2nd mile giving 3. Marge McConn 4. Mt Cross Retreat 5. Christmas Pageant, Community Sing, Generosity Abounds 7. December Calendar A special thank you to our staff who continue to give above and beyond what is ever asked of them. We are so blessed by their dedication, wisdom, and expertise. We have been masterfully served! I want to especially thank Marian Lacey who has served as our office administrator for over 4 years! What a jack of all trades and angel she has been for us through the years. I m very grateful to all our staff. We wouldn t be who we are without them! I d also like to thank our council, Teresa Adam, Walter Rau, Bill Strom, Michelle Runge, and Suzanne Mau for the many ways they have served. Much has been happening of late and you all have made the difference! Thank you. May God bless us all this holy season! Pastor Dawn Blessings from the staff of Coastside Lutheran Church In this season of reflection, we thank God for you. May the light of Christ shine brightly upon you, your loved ones, and this congregation. We are blessed to know and serve God with you through this community of faith. Warmest wishes: Pastor Dawn, Marian lacey, Liesl McPherrin, David Borac, and our nursery staff: Socorro & Dania.
2 OCTOBER 2017 TREASURER S REPORT OCTOBER 2ND MILE GIVING California Lutheran University Founded in 1959, California Lutheran University is home to more than 2,810 undergraduate and 1,316 graduate students who come from more than 61 countries and represent a wide variety of faiths. Our dedicated, accomplished faculty works with small classes of students who are openminded about ideas, about people, and about faith and are seeking to grow as individuals, to discover their purpose, and follow that purpose to transform their community and the world. 3 In Memory: Marge McConn Some members of Coastside Lutheran attended Marge s Celebration of Life on November 9th at Skylawn. Pastor Dawn was able to lead the ceremony as well as her burial. The family is very grateful to all. Here follows the memorial from the HMB Review. Marjorie Erickson Jama McConn lifted her eyes to the hills on Nov. 4, 2107, at the young age of 94. Born in Quincy, Ore., to Lydia and Matt Erickson. Following graduation from Claskanie High School in 1941, she moved to Portland where she met Alexander Jama at a USO dance. They married on July 27, The newlyweds moved to CA and built their first home in Millbrae where their daughters, Susan, Kathy and Joan were born. During this time, Marge became a founding member of Calvary Lutheran church in which she remained active her entire life. In 1960 the family moved to Capuchino Drive and welcomed their 4th daughter, Larissa. While being a busy mother, she still found time to enjoy her pastimes of fishing, travel and gardening as well as being a Girl Scout Troup leader for 16 years. She was also a very active member of her church and PTA. In 1959 she married Neil McConn and moved to Nevada City, CA, becoming active in Peace Lutheran Church. They spent their summers fishing and the winters traveling. Following Neil s passing in 1991, she returned to the Bay Area and resided in Half Moon Bay. Marge became a docent at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, delivered Meals on Wheels with her partner Richard Hock for Senior Coastsiders and taught the memers of her newest church, Coastside Lutheran, how to make Chrismons for their Christmas Tree. Marge lived a full and wonderful life in which she dedicated herself to her family, her church and her community. She will not only be remembered for her love and selflessness, but also her delicious apple pies. She will be forever missed by her daughters, Suksan Ballard (Jim) of Hernet, Kathy Valentine (Sonny) of Oakland, Joan Jama of Pescadero and Larissa Jama of New Orleans. Also by her grandchildren Sea Ballard, Alex Ballard (Candi) and children. A celebration of life took place Nov. 9 at Skylawn Memorial Park. Mother would be honored with a remembrance of flowers or a donation to Coastside Lutheran church. Adapted from The Half Moon Bay Review, Nov., 8th edition. 4 YOUTH CORNER Four middle school youth Elle Rau, Liliana DeBode, Jayda Bodas, Ella Ebert as well as Pastor Dawn went to Mt Cross for the Sierra Pacific Synod Youth Committee (SPYSC) Jr High Retreat on November It was the first time for all these youth and they had a great time. It was even possible to go bowling and have dinner in Santa Cruz prior since it was Veterans Day on that Friday. The weekend consisted of a great speaker who told his story and his faith. The youth also had a lot of opportunity to build community, pray, play, and grow in faith with other middle school youth from all over the synod. The girls in their cabin were from Holy Cross in Livermore. Thank you, Patricia Bodas, for staying Saturday night so Pastor Dawn could preach Sunday. Bless You! CLC Newsletter December pg.4

6 YOUR GENEROSITY & WHERE WE STAND GOING INTO 2018 This year, we purchased Target Gift Cards and Safeway Cards from the funds you so generously donated to Children in Need. These cards will be distributed to the families of the Community Breakfast. We also bought Subway Gift Certificates to distribute to the homeless. Thank you Marian and Eric for your extra efforts to make this possible! Ellen Taylor (with Dan s support) headed up Adopt a Family again this year. Folks signed up and bought the gifts/clothes and necessities for 10 people in need based on what they asked for. All who donated presents gave above and beyond again this year! Bless you and thank you for making Christmas extra special for those struggling! We also held our annual budget meeting on December 3rd. Our budget deficit as of the budget meeting amounts to $2,250.41, and we have yet to receive December s giving. We are in very good shape, but are asking that each family consider, as able, increasing their giving by 1 or 2%. That would make all the difference and start us off in a very good place for We also paid off our mortgage this year. What an accomplishment. In essence, we have no debt. We are a very healthy congregation from a financial standpoint. Your generosity continues..at the budget meeting, those present voted in favor of allowing Eric DeBode and volunteers from Abundant Grace and other churches and groups on the coastside, to open the West Wing as a temporary Rainy Day Shelter going forward and into the end of March or so end of the rainy season for the homeless. A light lunch, plus tea/coffee/hot chocolate will be available and the homeless can dry off and come in from the rain for a few hours. On Thursdays, Sundays, and early Saturdays when the West Wing is in use, the homeless will shelter in the fog house. Coats, umbrellas, rainy day gear in general will be stored in the fog house and distributed to the homeless as needed during these times. Thank you Greg for the great idea and offer to make a lattice for the temporary porta-potty! CLC, you, generously opened your hearts to the plight of the homeless on the coast and are prepared to use this space on rainy days and the day after during this winter season. Efforts will continue until a more permanent solution is found for the homeless in our midst. God is at work in our community here at CLC. ELCA Good Gifts ELCA Good Gifts go beyond your regular congregational offering to support the ministries of the ELCA that mean the most to you and your loved ones. Together, we can do more than we ever could alone, making a huge collective impact on the needs of our church and the world. If your gift is in honor of a friend or loved one, it s easy to tell them about it! Visit a card for a selection of printable cards. Give online or through the mail and you may request that a printed card for each of your gifts be mailed to your home. Please allow two weeks for delivery when ordering online, and three weeks for delivery when ordering through the mail. The ELCA s approach to ministry starts with listening. After our congregations and global companions identify local needs, we partner with them as they develop local solutions. As a long-standing, unwavering presence in nearly 90 countries, including the United States, we steer clear of one-size-fits-all answers and have enormous respect for local context, local expertise and local ingenuity.
