1 October 2018 C O A S T S I D E L U T H E R A N C H U R C H H A L F M O O N B A Y Walk in Beauty: Pilgrimage of El Camino de Santiago, Spain, North Coast Route No one is ready for the Camino, but the Camino is ready for you. Wes Granberg-Michaelson I leave this Friday to walk the Northern Coast of Spain known to be one of the loveliest paths to journey out of the 39 different caminos, or Way of St James lead to Santiago de Compostela. I love the idea that despite all the planning one never feels ready to expect all that is to come but that the Camino is always ready for whoever walks it! As Pastor Sue stated during Sunday s blessing, Remember you and those you travel with will not be tourists. You are pilgrims. You will receive many blessings on this pilgrimage and the most memorable ones will be those that are unplanned and unexpected. I relish that and appreciate all your prayers as I too will hold you in my heart and prayers with every step I take. I ll be with 16 others, including my husband plus guides and lead by an experienced retreat and pilgrimage leader. It s her words I share with you below plus our itinerary so that you too can travel with us in mind, spirit, and meditation. May God bless us all this pumpkin month of Half Moon Bay!! It is an inward and outward journey of spiritual significance and with devotion. A pilgrimage is not a walking vacation or seeing the sights, or being a tourist in the sense of being entertained. This is a different kind of journey; it is a pilgrimage, not a tour. You won t be rushing from site to site to get it all in. You will be rooted in the daily act of walking in a particular place: the ancient path of El Camino de Santiago. I love pilgrimage because I love the intimacy of walking. Planting my feet on solid ground and moving at human pace. In our crazy busy lifestyle, the immediacy of life is often lost on us. While walking we begin to slow down, allowing our heart and head to catch up to our feet, experiencing the world at three miles an hour. We begin our journey in one of the world s most beautiful cities, Madrid with an outstanding array of worldclass museums, restaurants, and parks. We end our journey in Santiago de Compostela, a medieval city with many beautiful and inspiring buildings, monuments, monasteries, churches, as well as fabulous Galician cuisine, music, and shopping. Music pours off the streets and out of cafes. Becoming a pilgrim doesn t mean removing yourself from life, but immersing yourself in the vibrant pulse of the world with practices to keep you centered. Come not to take, but to receive. Don't be a tourist, be a pilgrim! Buen Camino! By Valerie Brown, JD, MA, PCC, Pilgrimage Leader and Courage & Renewal Facilitator C L C O c t o b e r p g. 1

8 New This Fall! Tuesday, November 13 at 7:30-9. Join Pastor Dawn at It s Italia to discuss Accidental Saints by Nadia Bolz-Weber. In Accidental Saints, New York Times best-selling author Nadia Bolz-Weber invites readers into a surprising encounter with what she calls a religious but not-so-spiritual life. Tattooed, angry and profane, this former standup comic turned pastor stubbornly, sometimes hilariously, resists the God she feels called to serve. But God keeps showing up in the least likely of people a church-loving agnostic, a drag queen, a felonious Bishop and a gun-toting member of the NRA. Meet at It s Italia at 7:30 on Tuesday, November 13. Plan to buy your dinner, appetizers, dessert or just come for coffee. Bring your friends and join in this lively discussion! Accidental Saints is available at the library, and in paperback and audiobook format. Thursday, November 1 at 6:15-7:15. Engaging the Word: The Bible Library and Living Word of God We think of the Bible as a book but it is really a collection of books (like a library!) of many different genres written over the course of millennia. But the Bible is also the living word of God that speaks to us in our time and culture. Join Pastor Sue for a one hour, whirl-wind tour of the Bible. We ll look at the different kinds of writings contained in the Bible, what difference a translation makes, online study tools and more. Bring a bagged supper or a snack. Bring your friends. Thursdays, November 8 and 15 at 6:15-7:15. Bible Study Mini-Series: Luke The Infancy Narratives We turn to the Gospel of Luke with the start of the new church year that begins with Advent. Spend the two Thursdays before Thanksgiving exploring the opening chapters of Luke from which we get many of the details of the birth of Jesus: the Annunciation, Mary s Magnificat, the birth of John the Baptist, the shepherds, the angels and the manger. Bring a bagged supper or snack. Bring your friends. Be done by 7:15 in time for choir rehearsal or your favorite TV show. Represent CLC at HMB s annual Pumpkin Festival: Help out in the Chili Booth: Click on the link on the homepage of Coastside Lutheran homepage to signup for a shift or two: crew leaders, cooks, cashiers and servers are still needed. Walk in the parade: Put on your yellow God s Work, Our Hands t-shirt and meet at the library at 11 AM on Saturday, Oct 13. The short parade is a lot of fun and helps us get CLC s name out there. Let the office know if you are planning on walking so we can look for you and know how many banners to bring. info@coastsidelutheran.org CLC October 2018 pg. 8
