1 August 2018 C O A S T S I D E L U T H E R A N C H U R C H H A L F M O O N B A Y Jesus said to the ones who were sent out, Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while. For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the surrounding towns and arrived ahead of them. As Jesus went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had deep compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. Mark 6:30-34, NRSV What s Inside 2. June Treasurer Report & 2nd Mile Giving 3. July 4th & FaithFul Families 4. Graduations & Backpack Drive 5. Celebrating Bernstein 6. A Celebration of Life 7. Letter from the Bishop 8. Book Fair 9. Coming Up at CLC 10. August Calendar This scripture continues to work on me this week after last week s sermon preparation. What stands out for you? I first notice the compassion Jesus had for the apostles those who were sent out to heal, teach, and trust in the goodness of those they meet to help in providing shelter and food. They were to take only a staff and sandals. No money or bread. As they return and share the excitement of their time out in mission, Jesus recognizes they are in need of quiet a deserted place in order to be fed in body, mind, and spirit. I love Jesus pays attention to their need for bodily sustenance in addition to their need for quiet and a time to clear house, and just be. At least, that s how I interpret a deserted place. It s the place previously in this gospel where the Holy Spirit compels Jesus to go directly after his baptism. It is where the wild beasts and angels attend to him. It is here where his vocation what he is to do from here on out, solidifies. Thus, a deserted place is not necessarily peaceful or without it s shedding of what has become very important, yet may not be what we truly need or want. A deserted place is often a mixture of struggle and growth, clarification and letting go. I then love that Jesus went with them and that others saw them leave. They wanted to be with him so much that they went from miles around to that deserted place to receive all that he had to offer. When was the last time you so desired to be with Jesus that you went that extra mile? When was the last time you said, No to the many opportunities available to spend time elsewhere, and decided instead to be with Jesus? When did you last go to a deserted place, open to receive the gifts it offers instead of running away or busying yourself? It s so easy to get distracted these days! To listen to every one else except the whisper of truth, love, grace and healing within. It is so easy to miss the voice of God when so many other voices ring loud and clear. Yet, so much of it falls short, unable to truly feed the soul or nurture our true beings. Last, but not least, I love the compassion Jesus has for all the people in need his apostles and the crowd. He recognizes the need for truth, integrity, and compassionate leadership is wanting. He s willing to include the crowd while tending to his apostles need for sustenance and care. That s how big the heart and arms of Jesus are! He leaves no one wanting or in need. It seems by experiencing such abundance, those who receive are called do likewise. It s the gospel story made real for us in the person of Jesus Christ. May we, as part of the Church the body of Christ, continue to live as such and hear what that means in the specifics of our today at home, in this community and beyond. In Christ I pray, Pastor Dawn

5 Leonard Bernstein ( ) has given us a catalogue of great works, from jazz piano, to musical theater, to opera, as well as conducted some of the world s greatest pieces of music with the New York Philharmonic. This legendary conductor and composer introduced thousands of young people to the joys of classical music through television programs and concerts for young audiences. Bernstein worked with some of the greatest singers and dancers of his time and his music continues to influence current composers such as Stephen Schwartz, Lin Manuel-Miranda, and surely many more. On August 25 th, what would have been Leonard Bernstein s 100 th Birthday, we will celebrate this prolific composer s music with selections from Candide, West Side Story and Mass. Professional singers are donating their time and voices to enhance our program with solos from Wonderful Town, Trouble in Tahiti, and several lesser known art song selections. Coastside Lutheran Church will collect free-will donations for our weekly Community Breakfast program, offered every Wednesday and Thursday throughout the year. C L C A u g u s t p g. 5

6 A Celebration of Life On Tuesday, July 10, 2018, a lovely memorial was held at Coastside Lutheran to celebrate the life of Marlene, wife of Willie Anderson. Friends, family and dear neighbors gathered and shared stories and we learned that Marlene was an avid sports and opera fan, did pottery, gardening, and had a gift for making everyone she encountered feel like they were the only ones in the room. The love she and Willy shared, though brief, was powerful! Willy continues to be in our hearts and prayers. Thank you everyone for all your shares, prayer and care. C L C A u g u s t p g. 5

7 A Letter from Sierra Pacific Synod Bishop Mark Holmerud. Greetings! We have been in direct communication in the last 48 hours with the pastors and leaders of congregations in the fire areas in our synod. Here is the latest information we have about the fires that continue to burn in northern California: Our churches near Yosemite (Mountain Lutheran in Groveland and Mariposa Lutheran in Mariposa) are undamaged. Some members have been evacuated, some have been allowed to return home. The situation remains uncertain with regard to when the fire will be fully contained. St. James Lutheran in Redding is undamaged. It is not in an evacuation area. They have cancelled their VBS program for the coming week. They will also be making space for All Saints Episcopal to worship, since All Saints is in a mandatory evacuation area. Many members have been evacuated, we are uncertain if any members of St. James have lost their homes. One third of the residents of Redding have been evacuated, and over 500 structures have been destroyed. Many have asked what can be done to offer support and encouragement for those who have suffered terrible, sudden loss. We are suggesting donations to two places Lutheran Social Services of Northern California and Lutheran Disaster Response. Donations to Lutheran Social Services can be designated for needs in northern California in general. To donate to specific congregations, indicate the name of the congregation in the designated donation box. 100% of these monies will be given directly to churches and ministries that have been affected by the fires. Donations to Lutheran Disaster Relief can be designated to "US Wildfires" and will be used more generally to support communities that have been affected by fires during the summer (and likely into the fall fire season) throughout the west. 100% of donations so designated will be used by LDR to offer support to affected communities. You may also choose to donate to the American Red Cross. There are immediate needs for food, medical care and shelter that must be met - many people are still waiting for rescue from unsafe locations and adequate shelter once they have been rescued. Monetary donations are a much preferred response - it is easier for the Red Cross to purchase and distribute needed items rather than deal with the logistics of receiving donations in kind. Please remember in prayer the congregations in the fire areas: St. James, Redding; Mariposa Lutheran, Mariposa, and Mountain Lutheran in Groveland. Other congregations near to these fires are already offering assistance as they are able. Please keep all in these communities in your prayers, as well as the firefighters and other first responders who are assisting in providing rescue and safety. A suggested prayer from the ELW Armed Services Prayer Book: Loving God, in the communion of Christ, we are joined with the sufferings of all. Be with those who are enduring the effects of the fires which are burning in our area of witness and service. Protect those in the path of danger. Open pathways for evacuation and shelter. Help loved ones find one another in the chaos. Provide assistance to those who need help. Let your love be made known in those who seek to bring order in the chaos. Help us to shoulder the burden of suffering, and make us bearers of the hope that is your healing gift in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen God's Peace, Bp. Mark C L C A u g u s t p g. 7
