2 Dear Friends and Family of Mount Zion, It hardly seems possible that our time will soon be coming to a close. I want to say that it has truly been an honor to serve at Mount Zion. You have brought your children before me for baptism, confirmation and yes even some of you have asked me to officiate at your child s wedding and in some cases for renewal of vows for you personally. It is my joy and to look and consider all the ministry we have done together. We have attended mission trips together, discerned God direction for our congregation and even prepared a new mission, vision and core values during this time. We have celebrate 150 years at the corner of Brownbridge and Scaggsville Rds. We have paid off a considerable portion of our mortgage principle result in a great saving in time and interest payments through the Legacy fund and we have upgraded our facility and expanded new mission opportunities. Over these many years, we have said good bye to good friends and members of Mount Zion as they joined what we in the church refer to as the Church Triumphant. During these years, you have supported me by caring for me and my family after the death of both my parents. I have had the honor of serving for you and your family in over sixty funerals in these eight years together. Despite our losses, God continued to provide avenues for growth and opportunity by bringing new people into our community of faith. It goes without saying but I m going to say it anyways, I am going to miss you all and I want to say how much I appreciate our time together and will keep you and your new pastor, Pastor Joan, in my prayers and I will appreciate your prayers for me and my return to my home congregation of Westminster UMC. May you continue to touch lives for Jesus Christ is real and tangible ways that brings about great fruit for God s kingdom. And as we have closed each worship service since my arrival, May God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit God watch over you until we are gathered again! Pastor Malcolm An Order of Farewell to a Pastor Pastor: I thank you, the members and friends of Mount Zion UMC, for the love and support you have shown me while I have ministered among you. I am grateful for the ways my leadership has been accepted. I ask forgiveness for the mistakes I have made. As I leave, I carry with me all that I have learned here. Congregation: We received your thankfulness, offer forgiveness, and accept that you now leave to minister elsewhere. We express our gratitude for your time among us. We ask your forgiveness for our mistakes. Your influence on our faith and faithfulness will not leave us with your departure. Pastor: I accept your gratitude and forgiveness, and I forgive you, trusting that our time together and our parting are pleasing to God. I release you from turning to me and depending on me. I encourage your continuing ministry here and will pray for you and your new pastor, Rev Joan Carter-Rimbach. Let us pray: Eternal God, whose steadfast love for us is from everlasting to everlasting, we give you thanks for cherished memories and commend one another into your care as we move in new directions. Keep us in your love forever, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. UMH 557 2

3 From: "Elma T Jocson" Subject: Urgent prayer request for Nepal 5/13/2015 Dear covenant friends, You all have prayed for Nepal and Tansen hospital patients. Dr Olak, a fellow surgeon, gives an update on the current situation there. Okhaldhunga hospital that dr Olak mentioned is another mission hospital- smaller in size but serves a big area. Please keep praying for Nepal. Take time to praise God for His amazing work of physical salvation to those His children on board that bus. Read on and be in awe of the migthy hand of God. Thank you. Elma T Jocson, MD Marikina City 1800 Philippines Dear friends, Here is our updates. Hospitals are coping with the present crisis. With yesterday's quake was nearer to Okhaldhunga, few residential buildings in the hospital compound got damaged. Extent of damage is not assessed yet. Okhaldhunga Cristian Hospital had 55 in- patients this morning and treating about 150 general out-patient cases. No human casualty noted in the hospital and among the staff at OCH. Tansen hospital had 145 admitted patient yesterday and treating around 300+ general as well as the injured patients in the outpatient and emergency department. Yesterday several people from Churches in Tansen were travelling on a rented vehicle to distribute the relief material down to Kol Danda. Suddenly the vehicle lost the control during the powerful quake and fell about 25 meters below the road. Our mighty God sent his angels and protected His children as the vehicle got caught over a tree, preventing a fall down the hill. Several of them got mild to moderate injuries but none were seriously injured. Ourselves and family members: We were recovering slowly and were about to go in a normal way until yesterday's strong quake (7.3 magnitude). The epicenter was somewhere in Dolakha District (Olak family home). Most of the casualty was from this District. Almost all houses belonging to 17 families in Olak's village has been further damaged. These people are spending their nights at the open field with very basic shelter. Government and other aid agencies were so far focusing their relief work in other Districts. and people in Dolakha was almost out of their radar. We in Kathmandu are safe physically. Olak continued to work both in UMN and Anandaban hospital. Yesterday He was in Anandaban attending the injured people (17 in total brought soon after the afternoon quake- one died) along with other doctors. Today he finds time to write this at his Thapathali office after attending few meetings and visiting Ministry of Health and Population. We in Kathmandu are thankful to God that we still can sleep (someone sleeps while another keep awake) inside our house. But it is not easy to realize that so many other families are spending their nights in a unsafe temporary shelter. We will appreciate your prayer. We might have forgot to add the list. Kindly share this with other friends. We will update again in few weeks time. With best regards, Olak 3

No, a lot of the items we receive are free from either the Howard County Food Bank (HCFB) or the MD Food Bank (MFB). For instance in April we had 4 large cases of Easter candy donated to us from HCFB because they got a large shipment of left over Easter candy from Target. Some items that we do buy each month are frozen meat, paper products (tissue paper), spaghetti sauce, and diapers. All of the items we receive on the Friday before the food pantry is free, even delivery. Below is a list of items that we bought, and also what we received free from the MD Food Bank. 7 These are our Stephen Ministers: Warren Howard We have been members of Mt. Zion UMC for 21 years. About 56 years ago, I persuaded Barbara, a city girl from Milwaukee, WI to marry me, a Kansas dairy farmer. However, financially our small family dairy farm was not viable. Regardless, for four years after we married, I farmed with my father and assisted in providing financial support for my parents and younger sister without gaining anything financially. After our son Donald was born, Barb and I decided that our long term financial outlook from farming was bleak. When my father was old enough to draw Social Security, I joined the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) at their office in KC, MO. FDA is a law enforcement agency. I began a 30 year career in government service in FDA. I became an inspector of the quality controls used by food, drug, medical device, cosmetic and biologic manufacturers that ship their products in interstate commerce. To get promotions, we moved from Missouri to Chicago, to Philadelphia, and in 1973, to MD. During the last 10 years in FDA, I wrote and reviewed Federal Regulations and other documents that FDA publishes in the Federal Register (a government newspaper). These documents provide guidance to industry on how to comply with the complex Federal Food and Drug Laws. My important primary caregiving activity for years has been to assist Barb in raising our 3 children. Our oldest child, Donald, is autistic, so for the last 50 years I have been a care giver along with my wife for Donald. We are still coping with raising a disabled autistic child (now an adult) and trying to provide a normal life for our 2 younger girls. While living in NJ, we joined an organization helping parents cope with raising autistic children. We gained insight and felt like we provided some helpful suggestions to these mothers as I was the only father who attended. My favorite hobby is reading, which is almost as enjoyable is wood working. I make furniture, built a deck on our house, and made many intarsia projects. Barb and I spent one summer building a garage for our cabin near Berkley Springs, WV. My faith journey grew out of my caregiving activities. Although raised in the church, I was not really active while in college and immediately afterwards. While in the Army, I attended a Methodist church in Milwaukee, and through the church I met Barb. Later, Barb attended a church college, and I joined her in attending church when possible. After we married, I gradually became more and more committed to faith in Jesus. We were active members in the Methodist Church at each of the several cities where we lived including the UMC at Colesville, MD. I became a Stephen Minister as an outgrowth of coping with the many issues and problems of raising a handicapped child and have accepted Jesus as my personal savior. 7

8 POINTS OF LIGHT: I have finally gotten my act together enough to write up what I (we) did with the seed money you gave me in November. I apologize for taking so long to do this. There are ways that the chemo and this whole cancer treatment experience have affected me that become apparent at random times. This is one of them. I have realized that my ability to focus and get things accomplished is really off. I think part of it is the chemo and part is just the effect of going through the end of it in the winter. I'm hoping that warmer weather will have a positive effect... Since I can't figure out how to attach photos to this, I'm sending those separately in 2 s. Ignore the untitled attachment - it's nothing. And if this really should go to someone else, I'm trusting you will get it there. I'm not sure why this part is so overwhelming, but it is... Despite my slowness and frustrations with execution, I really do appreciate the opportunity to do this project. I feel like it made a difference in a way that means a lot to me. Hope you enjoy reading it and the pictures! Peace, Jenny Burtzlaf 8

10 It all started with a beautiful wedding on April 11th when the Giovanni and Simpson families and friends gathered to witness the marriage of Becky and Stanley. The wedding reception was an extravagant affair. After a delicious dinner, the wedding cake was cut, and as the bride and groom enjoyed their first dance, the bride was shot dead before our very eyes! In reality, this event was Mt. Zion s 4th Murder Mystery Dinner Theater production, Till Death Do Us Part. The bride s mob-boss father Tony, disliked the groom, Stanley, so he hired his hit man to take out the groom at the reception. Did the hit man have terrible aim, or was there a more sinister plot? Every member of the family had a reason to get rid of the bride, but who did it? After examining the evidence, the case was solved thanks to a keen observation by the homicide detective (who had a striking resemblance to the beautiful bride)! The culprit was Brutus Simpson, the groom s brother and Best Man! The motive? Becky, the bride, planned to force her new brother-in-law out of the business owned by the groom and his brother. All of our talented actors and actresses performed brilliantly and were rewarded with uproarious laughter from the audience. From left to right below, the cast included: Bettye Ames, Tammi Brantley, Ken Sines, Rod Barr, Carol Hill, Marcy Amos, Malcolm Stranathan, Belinda Norton, Chris Maynard, Christy Erwin, JoEllen Sines, Wendy Singer, Mike Singer, Diana Bandy, and Jan Plant. Till Death Do Us Part was a production of Mt. Zion s Fellowship Committee members: Jan Plant, Diana Bandy, Kathy Shen, Carol Messerly, Lorene Brown, Jill Reese, and Stephanie with assistance from Chuck Plant, Rob Messerly, Frank Lineberger, and Frances Colvin.
