2016 Mount Zion United Methodist Church Scaggsville Road (Route 216), Highland, MD Our Mission Touching Lives for Jesus Christ. Our Core Values Living the Christ Centered Life. Being Bible Oriented. Building an Authentic Community. Celebrating Diversity. Encouraging Spiritual Growth. Serving Through Our Spiritual Gifts and Passion. Our Vision We shall build an authentic community modeled after the Acts 2 Church. We shall provide educational opportunities for spiritual growth and encourage all members to participate. We shall build welcoming opportunities for those who are not part of us. All of us are ministers by virtue of our baptism and are called to use our spiritual gifts in service to God. Staff is hired to equip the membership for the realization of this vision. Mt. Zion UMC Contact Info Office: or Fax: mtzionhighland@verizon.net On May 8 th, at 5:45pm I will fly across the country to Portland, Oregon to be a part of the delegation of laity and clergy that will represent the Baltimore- Washington Annual Conference at the 2016 General Conference of The United Methodist Church. The General Conference will be held from May 10-20, The General Conference is an international body of nearly 1,000 delegates that meets every four years. The delegates are elected by annual conferences to attend General Conference. They represent all annual conferences around the world. Half of the delegates are laity (non- clergy members), half are clergy. The theme for this General Conference is based on the Great Commission set forth in Matthew 28:19-20: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. This will be my fifth General Conference. In 1984 I was elected as a young adult lay delegate as our denomination gathered in Baltimore to celebrate the Bicentennial of the Christmas Conference that was held at Lovely Lane UMC in This was my first eye opener to the politics of the church and understanding how we live as a body of Christ. There were resolutions and protests, as well as speeches for and against. I must confess that I came away from that General Conference with mixed emotions seeing the best of the church and the worst of the church. Yet, I was still hopeful of what God would do with and through the people called United Methodist, for I have been one all of my life. After taking a break to start my family, in 2004 I was elected as a clergy delegate to General Conference which was held in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. In 2008 the conference was in Fort Worth, Texas. And in 2012 the General Conference was in Tampa, Florida. It is indeed an honor to attend the General Conference and to serve our denomination in this capacity. I do not take this role lightly, but am humbled by the opportunity to help shape the future for our Church as we seek to proclaim the Love of God to ALL people and connect with sisters and brothers around the globe for the transformation of the world. General Conference is the top policy-making body of The United Methodist Church. During General Conference, delegates discuss and vote on petitions and resolutions proposed by individuals, agencies, annual conferences, and other groups within the denomination. These actions result in a revision of the Book of Discipline and the Book of Resolutions. The conference can revise church law, as well as adopt resolutions on current moral, social, public policy and economic issues. It also approves plans and budgets for church-wide programs. Here are some of the major legislative issues that will be addressed at the General Conference: (continued on page 2) 1
Church Structure, General Agencies, Central Conferences and Jurisdictions, Making the Discipline Truly Global, Bishops, New Hymnal, Young People, Social Principles, Human Sexuality, Racism, Creation Care, and the Budget. I invite you to pray for me, all of the delegates and our entire denomination as we gather in Portland to do the work of the church. I also invite you to stay tuned in to the General Conference by going to the United Methodist website to livestream and read daily on what is happening. I will be on stage making a presentation with other members of The United Methodist Global Aids Fund on Wednesday, May 18 th from 12:15 to 12:25 in the afternoon. 3 IF YOU WANT TO WALK ON WATER YOU VE GOT TO GET OUT OF THE BOAT Have you heard of our Spring Small Group Study? It is built around a wonderful little book titled: If You Want to Walk on Water, You ve Got to Get Out of the boat. It will help us make Peter s story in Matthew 14 the story of our lives as well. There is more to life than sitting in the boat. There is something inside us all that wants to know what it would be like to walk on the water to follow Jesus and find ourselves moving into the high adventure of the life of his disciples. From a History of Water-Walking in the Bible, to lessons in overcoming fear, to learning how to keep from sinking, it is all living out our total trust in God. It all begins on Sunday, May 8 and continues for six sessions. Come and join in one of the Groups that are forming now: Sunday at 10:00AM led by Deb Leiss Discipleship Sunday at 5:00PM led by Pastor David and Deb Leiss Monday (beginning on May 9) at 7:00PM Led by Pastor David and Sam Hergert And, as always, Pastor David offers a carry out session i.e. to come to your house or wherever you chose to gather with at least two or three and carry on the study. Contact him (pastordavidcr@verizon.net) if you want to take him up on this. Don t be a boat potato. Get out and get into one of these groups and find out what it would be like to walk on water. Would your shoes get wet? THE FIRST ANNUAL MT. ZION KAYAK REGATTA SUNDAY, JUNE 12 at 2:00PM As a part of the Get Out of the Boat theme for our Study Groups in May and June, we will hold our First annual Kayak Regatta on Sunday, June 12. We will meet at the church at 2:00PM and transport ourselves and our kayaks to the bridge on Haviland Mill Road over the branch of the Patuxent River. We will put in the river there and paddle down (it s all downhill) under Rt. 108 and onto the bridge at Brown s Bridge Road where we will disembark the waterside, we will enjoy an end of the journey lunch before being carried back to our starting point. Sound like fun? It sure does, especially if it doesn t rain. We are looking for both kayaks and kayakers for this great occasion. If you are either one or both please contact Pastor David. Our hope is to be able to provide kayaks (or possibly canoes) for all who wish to go. The River is shallow so there is little risk but lots of opportunity for fun! 3
Discipleship Sunday, May 22 PEACE with JUSTICE SUNDAY Together, we spread the Gospel of Peace and encourage cooperation locally, in the United States and globally. Some examples: 1. Alaskans try Congregation based Community Organizing, learning to address issues and solve problems. 2. Immigrating men find help and hope in Michigan, with offers of hospitality, along with legal services, education and advocacy. 3. Praying for Peace, an ex-offender credits this offering with her new life. More examples at COVENANT DISCIPLESHIP GROUP In the Gospels, we read of Jesus walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee looking for disciples to follow him. Jesus still calls us come and walk with him in the wonderful adventure of walking with him in growing devotion and discipleship. One of the ways of doing this is by becoming a part of a Covenant Discipleship Group. As described in last month s Pointer, this is a group of 8-10 people who meet for one hour weekly to form o live by a covenant of Christian living. You can be a part of this group. If you are interested, please contact Pastor David for a brochure that will explain more about the group and his earnest invitation to be one of its members. Grilling with the Gospel Beginning on Wednesday, June 22 and continuing for three more Wednesdays at 6:00PM, we will meet at the outdoor grill and after a grilled meal appropriate to each Gospel, we will share in a study of the heart of the words of Good News that Gospel brings. It will be like eating with Jesus! TRAINING FOR NEW STEPHEN MINISTERS TO BE OFFERED IN THE FALL Stephen Ministers are congregation members who are recruited, selected, trained, and commissioned to provide one-to-one lay caring ministry to people in need of care and support. They participate in monthly supervision with other Stephen Ministers. They make an initial two year commitment, including 50 hours of training, and may renew this commitment to continue in the ministry. The training for our next group of Stephen Ministers at Mt Zion will be held in the Fall. It will begin with an all day Retreat on Saturday, September 24 and continue on Sunday afternoons 12:30-3:00PM. The full course of the training will take 20 sessions. There will be a break from Thanksgiving, resuming on January 8. The time leading up to this training is opportunity for members of the congregation to seek whether the Lord may be leading you to become a Stephen Minister. Enjoying people, Being open to God s guidance, Caring for people, and willing to commit to training and sharing in supervision are the basic traits for this ministry. There is a job description that outlines the activities of those who dedicate themselves to this work. If you are interested or would like to know more, please contact Pastor David or Jenny Burtzlaff or Deb Burgio. We would be happy to talk with you, share a copy of the job description, or give you an application for Stephen Ministry. We ask all the congregation to pray that God s spirit will be leading us in the formation of this new group of Stephen Ministers for Mt. Zion Church. 4

April 2016 News from Nan & Miguel Dear Friends, Warm greetings in Christ s example from Nan and Miguel. We hope you are feeling the risen Christ in your lives. We continue as missionaries and Mission Advocates for the Western Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. Our United Methodist Missionaries are bridges of hope from congregations to people around the world. Through sermons and presentations at churches we are promoting Covenant Relationships between our missionaries and our congregations. We are also sharing about the incredible international programs you support through your apportionments and ADVANCE giving like Partners in Mission, Global Health, UMCOR and Generation Transformation which includes amazing missionary opportunities for young adults ages 18 to 30. Put Generation Transformation and United Methodist Church in your search engine to learn more. Young adults can serve in Mission in the US or Internationally for two months or two years! You can always us at nanmigl@yahoo.com or call us at for more information. In November and December we had a wonderful time visiting our own Covenant churches in the Baltimore- Washington Conference. Many thanks to all who hosted us. We are sad we weren t able to visit all of our Covenant Churches and hope to return soon. One of the mission programs we have been involved with in the Western Jurisdiction and specifically in the California-Pacific Conference is You are Not Alone. In ,540 kids from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala flooded the US-Mexico border, traveling alone at great risk. They were fleeing extreme violence from countries with the highest homicide rates anywhere outside an actual warzone. Many of the children were under twelve. Most were hoping to reach a family member living in the US. But the US does not recognize them as refugees so many are deported back to dangerous situations where there is a chance they will be killed. As part of the United Methodist response to this tragedy the California-Pacific Conference began a program called You Are Not Alone. UMCOR (which means you) has helped finance this healing embrace to children who are here looking for refuge from the violence in their countries. This program provides services to unaccompanied Central American minors including mental health referrals, legal assistance referrals, monetary contributions for legal assistance, community events, retreats and outings. The legal assistance is a key element. Children who appear in Immigration Court alone have a 7% chance of getting a pathway to residency and citizenship whereas those who have legal counsel have a 70% chance of getting to stay. Four Welcome Centers opened at United Methodist churches in 2015 in the California-Pacific Conference. A Summer Camp, No Están Solos (You are not Alone) served children referred by legal and mental health service providers in California. Through collaboration with the Wesley Foundation at UCLA older teens were introduced to resources for pursuing higher education. In December there was a Young Women Empowerment Retreat that served 21 teens. The You Are Not Alone programs and services are free. This year at the second summer camp a hundred kids and 25 volunteers are expected. A second Immigrant Welcoming Congregations Training on April 23rd will raise awareness about this humanitarian issue and connect new congregations to expand support to the families of unaccompanied minors that need our help. We want to INSPIRE THE WORLD as passionate followers of Jesus Christ so all may experience God s life-giving love to ensure that our brothers and sisters feel the word of God through our work. Nan and Miguel will teach Latin America again in two conferences at United Methodist Women s Mission U. Mission Opportunities Sandwiches for the homeless makes over 1000 sandwiches every month. Join us the 2 nd Sunday of the month in Fellowship hall during the Sunday School hour. Fellowship committee hosts the wonderful snacks during fellowship time every Sunday. Many hands make light work! 6

MtZ Library News - Our church library is moving into the 21st century! With the new web site up and running, there are some new opportunities for MtZ s library users one we can use right away and one will be implemented in the near future, hopefully. The first is the library s very own address: library@mtzionhighland.com. This is active now so let s start communicating! Here s something I m curious about space is very limited in our library, and the videorecordings in VHS format take up a lot of shelf space (most of these are in the Children and Youth section, many are VeggieTales). If you borrow videorecordings from MtZ library (or will now that you know they are there!), could you let me know if you only have access to VHS players? This may be an area where we can replace the VHSs with DVDs over time and gain some more shelf space. Let me know me! The next item has been a goal of mine for some time now to get the library catalog on the website. It looks like this is a real possibility with the new website; and now with the Communications Committee s approval, it looks like this will happen. I ll have to figure out the details, and as soon as I get it up and running I ll let you know. Then, you ll be able to see what books, music CDs, and videos are in our library from wherever you can access the church s website! Check out will still be 20th century tech, though filling out the check-out slip in the back of each library item. While all of this is going on behind the scenes, there are some new reads in the library. Four more books in the popular Quilts of Love (813 QOL) series are just in: Pattern for Romance (Carla Olson Gade), Raw Edges (Sandra D. Bricker), A Heartbeat Away (S. Dionne Moore), and Pieces of the Heart (Bonnie S. Calhoun). To find out more about these books, check out the website: Happy reading til next time Robin E. Emrich, Librarian 7
