IS THERE A SOLUTION? Shahab Saeed, VP & COO, Questar Energy Services Things have gotten even more confusing in the Middle East if that is possible. Emergence of ISIS has complicated issues, impacted millions of lives and increased chaos. An appreciation for the history, geography, ethnicity and religious affiliations of the region will help improve our understanding of the forces at work. After a brief introduction to the above topics we will have a question and answer period using an interactive map. Heern, PhD, Idaho State University, Dept. of History Come and hear about the historical background and ideological roots of the most powerful religious movement in modern Iraq and Iran Usuli Shi ism. The long-term impact of the Usuli Shi i revival was that Shi i scholars gained unprecedented social, political, and economic power in Iran and southern Iraq. Shi i clerics continue to operate at the heart of social and political developments in the Islamic Republic of Iran and post-saddam Hussein Iraq. They are building a state-of-the-art theater in Sandy in order to create more opportunities for local artists and patrons to participate in high-quality family theatre. Tuesday, April 26 at the Marriott, 75 South West Temple ENEMIES WITHIN: THE CONSPIRACY CULTURE OF MODERN AMERICA Robert A. Goldberg, Professor of History & Director, Tanner Humanities Center, University of Utah This talk will explore the culture of conspiracy in modern America. It seeks to answer such questions as why do Americans believe in conspiracy theories? How has conspiracy thinking changed in the last fifty years? How has the internet effected conspiracy thinking and its range? What agents in American society teach men and women to believe?

2 Greetings Club 24 members (and their families), Our Club Executive, Linda Kruse (directly to my right in the inset photo) and the Chair of the Hatch Family Board, Carol Hatch (standing between Rotary International President Ravi and Linda) have urged me to reach out to our club with an explanation for my declining weight, weakness of voice, and "hitch in my giddy-up". I have declined to do so waiting for the day that I would be able to deliver a positive report. Today is the day! I now have a clear diagnosis of an auto-immune issue called Polymyositis, a recipe for treatment, and confirmation from others who have experienced the same problem during the last decade that after treatment and therapy all will be well. I feel much more comfortable in letting our club know that by the time the 1-year presidential torch passes from my hands to our bright and talented President Elect, Shahab Saeed, I will be more than ready to retire as your president. Then, I will head back to a couple of my favorite club committees where I can continue to serve our city, state, nation, and world with excellent health. I am aware of many of our members, past and present, who have experienced issues more difficult than mine, several while they were also serving as club president. Our Executive Committee and Board have been incredibly supportive and covered your president in every way through his tougher weeks in January and February. If asked, I would report my most difficult day was Tuesday, February 23, the day I was sitting at the head table and lodged a piece of steak in my throat requiring a hero's response from Rick Barnes and Dave Broadbent who were sitting to my side. Thanks to both for, "clearing up the issue" as I provided a Rotary Moment for those who attended and were looking forward. I attended that day with the concern of our doctors feeling the need to discuss and present special scouting awards to Dave and Rick on Rick's last day with our club. Our maker sat them next to me so that they could save my life. It's that simple. My last message is that many of you have greeted me recently and expressed that during the "gray days" you were doing what each of you do best (thinking kind thoughts, creating positive Karma, praying with your families, and even adding my name to the pray rolls of your individual faiths). This is the Rotary way! This is how we buoy up those who surround us. I want you to know that I felt and experienced the power that was generated by your actions which has elevated my love and respect for each of you to an even higher level than it was before. It has been an honor to serve in our club; it is an honor to associate with all of you. God bless each of you and those who surround you and thank you, thank you, thank you. Floyd and Carol Hatch 2

3 YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter by Teri Jensen Club 24 Rotarians Bob Huefner, Jim Schwing, and Teri Jensen volunteered at the YWCA Domestic Violence shelter. We also presented a foundation grant of $1000. We had the opportunity to read to and play with about 10 preschoolers who are being sheltered. We worked with four staff members. I wish I could show you their sweet little faces, but these children are in hiding with their mothers. We were told these children get very little one-on-one attention. They rarely get the opportunity to interact with men, and they crave positive interaction with kind, gentle, males. Jim and Bob exemplify what being a role model is all about. They take "Service Above Self" to the next level. We had a great time, but saying goodbye was difficult. What do you say to three year olds when they ask you not to leave and plead with you to come back? It was a special moment for me. 3

7 India Service Trip Salt Lake Rotary members, Dr. Scott Leckman, Roger McQueen, and Club President Floyd Hatch, recognizing the exchange of good will and service performed by Rotary of Salt Lake City and citizens of India on the service travel to that country by club members and friends earlier this year. 11 Rotary Around the World Third graders drink soy milk at Proximos Pasos school in Guatemala. A Rotary project equipped the school with a computer lab, stainless steel kitchen equipment, and a machine known as a mechanical cow, which produces soy milk and okara, or soy pulp, a nutritious food. 11

13 Come Plant Trees with the Rotary Club of Salt Lake City! The Rotary Club of Salt Lake City is partnering once again with TreeUtah to plant 750 native tree seedlings in the Big Cottonwood East Park, located at 4500 South 1500 East,on Saturday, April 9. The Salt Lake City Rotary Club Foundation gave our club a $1,000 grant for this project. We are meeting at 9am and expect to be done by noon. We need volunteers for this project. Tree Utah will provide the shovels, but people should bring their own gardening gloves if they wish to use them. This is a wetland area so wear closed toed shoes that can get a little wet and muddy. Please RSVP online at and when asked if you are volunteering with a particular group please write Rotary. We hope to see you there! 13

14 Welcome Great New Member Mary Ann Nations I was born in Austin, Texas and lived between there and San Antonio most of my life. I have two wonderful children and five teenage grandchildren. I moved here to be close to them. I have been a Realtor for over twenty years and have been blessed to help a lot of people along the way. I love cooking, creating art, traveling, and helping others. 14

15 Welcome Cool New Member Jon Hatch I was born in Salt Lake City as a sixth generation Utahn from pioneer ancestry. One of my ancestors was in the original arrival party in the valley. I attended East High School and then, after an LDS mission to San Diego, CA, I attended the University of Utah, affiliating with Beta Theta Pi. A dear fraternity brother introduced me to my sweetheart, Hilary from Salt Lake City. I graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in finance. Hilary is a Newborn ICU Nurse and I m a Financial Planner with Wasatch Capital. We are raising four children, living in South Jordan. We support Utah sports and Disneyland! 15
