1 Rotary Bee A Publication of Club 24 The Salt Lake City Rotary Club Volume 39 January 2015 Number 7 Tuesday, January 6 at the Marriott, 75 South West Temple ONE WASATCH Nathan Rafferty, Executive Director, Ski Utah Nathan Rafferty, President & CEO of Ski Utah, will be our speaker. With the addition of just a few connecting lifts, the dream of turning seven Utah resorts into the largest contiguous ski experience in North America could easily become a ONE Wasatch reality. The Wasatch Mountains are grand, iconic and drenched in a rich abundance of snow. They are also geographically compact allowing seven Utah resorts to coexist as literal neighbors, often separated by just a single ridge - some by just a rope line. As a result of this unique proximity, an obvious questions arises: "What if you could ski between the seven resorts, and do so on one pass? What if?" Ski Utah President Nathan Rafferty will give an overview of the concept, discuss the benefits this concept might provide for Utah's tourism industry, the challenges it faces and answers questions. Tuesday, January 13 at the Marriott, 75 South West Temple THE ART OF COLLABORATION Dallas Graham, Creator, Red Fred Project Dallas Graham is the founder and creator of the Red Fred Project. He collaborates with critically ill children to help them tell their stories. He created Red Fred and his colorful friend, The Jolly Troop, six years ago and has been telling stories with them ever since. Dallas is a photojournalist, graphic designer, writer and enjoys discovering creative ways of connecting people through their stories. He has produced a number of personal and community driven projects and initiatives and can't seem to turn off his "idea" switch. The Red Fred Project is a culmination of three of his favorite things: narratives, hope, and children. Tuesday, January 20 at the Red Lion, 161 West 600 South SLC REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY Jason Belliveau, Deputy Director, Redevelopment Agency of SLC The George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater is a 2,500-seat, state-of-the-art theater designed to enhance the cultural and economic vitality of the region by presenting first-run touring Broadway shows and other local and national music, performing arts, comedy and family entertainment in downtown Salt Lake City. Designed by HKS/Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects and built by Layton Construction, the Eccles Theater is scheduled for completion in June Salt Lake County Center for the Arts will operate the theater and its various amenities, such as black box and rehearsal spaces, and has partnered with MagicSpace Entertainment to program Broadway and popular entertainment offerings in the theater. The project will also involve the revitalization of Regent Street, with additional retail development and programmed public spaces, including a mid-block pedestrian connection to Main Street. Tuesday, January 27 at the Red Lion, 161 West 600 South TO BE ANNOUNCED

5 Pictured from L-R: Mike Deputy, Safia Keller, Chris Quinn, and Duane Millard. Dear Floyd, Thanks so much for the $1,500 donation from Duane Millard and Club 24 for our Chamber Singers program. The Director of the program, Dr. Chris Quinn, was not expecting this at all and was overjoyed to receive this check! Safia Keller, Director of Corporate Relations Westminster College Salt Lake Rotary, here represented by Jim Schwing, chair of the club's Youth/Child Crisis Committee, presents a check for financial support to Volunteers of America, represented by Salt Lake City's Anna Stapley. Rotary service to the youth of our community is a mainstay of the club. 7 We re THIS Close! Alem Mumuni, Ghanaian Paralympian and friend of Club 24, has been busy since his visit with us. Here he is back at home, immunizing kids against polio. He s working to close the ever-smaller gap between where we stand now and a world without polio. 7

9 Career Day at Franklin School by Russ Fericks On Thursday, Nov. 13th, Club 24 put on the annual Career Day at Franklin School. Presenters shared information about their jobs with fifth and sixth graders and they emphasized the importance of reading, math, good citizenship, and teamwork. Skip Daynes (Daynes Music) explained the mechanical workings of piano keyboards and discussed the challenges of running the oldest piano store west of New York City. Skip also gave three lucky classes a Career Day bonus by bringing along his dog, Reggie, and then reading to them from his book about Colonel, the famous Intermountain Therapy Dog. Kent King (Red Lion) reprised his career as an airline pilot and thrilled the students with the history of aviation, the workings of airplanes, and the actual steps of taking off and landing. Don t let Kent s dignified demeanor as Club 24 s Sergeant At Arms fool you with his beautiful models, he was a highly energetic and effective classroom presenter. Taylor Scalley (U. Health Sciences) did the nearly impossible: with no props or handouts, he kept the 11 and 12 year olds enthralled with a broad discussion of the medical field, and added an enticing look inside the world of higher education. Taylor was a pied piper of cool! Mike Deputy (Utility Trailer Sales of Utah) gave the perennially popular presentation on transportation. Mike s classroom calculations of load capacity and his descriptions of the highly integrated trucking industry were bolstered by a climb-aboard tour of an actual truck. Talk about attention and energy? Aladin Hadzikadunic (YESCO) was a return presenter on the field of engineering. His very quiet style is the perfect foil for his dramatic photos and diagrams of big building and engineering issues. The students hung on his explanations, his PowerPoint slides, and his stock advice that if you want to really learn something, read it three times! Mike Deputy, Utility Trailer Sales of Utah, President, Club 24 Franklin Elementary School 6th graders learned about careers in law enforcement, airlines, engineering, publishing, animal husbandry and more at the school's annual Career Day presented by members of Salt Lake Rotary. Above, some of the enthusiastic students awaiting a turn to sit in a big-rig truck and learn about the trucking industry. Smiles all around. The SLCPD supported Career Day again with an appearance by Officer Veronica Montoya. This totally together police officer has a way of encouraging students to not only consider jobs in law enforcement, but also to be good citizens, regardless of their jobs or stations in life. 9 Pilot Kent King Officer Veronica Montoya

10 Feeling the need for speed at the Race for Sight go-cart extravaganza Community supporters including a good number from Salt Lake Rotary turned out to support Charity Vision Utah and its plan to provide eye exams and corrective glasses for all needy youth in the Salt Lake Valley. Here Salt Lake Rotarians Shahab Saeed and Don Weakly pose with enthusiastic volunteers on the Race for Sight team. Dr. Glen Prestwich, University of Utah s Presidential Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and entrepreneur extraordinaire presenting to Salt Lake Rotary; not just research but practical application to bring the wonders of modern technology and biology to the bedside; (HA)-derived synthetic extracellular matrices (secms) autologus cell regeneration; this means using the body s own cells and systems to heal itself. It s a future full of promise. 10

12 We LOVE Visitors! Members of the Morocco Vocational Training Team exchange program visited in Utah recently for professional training and idea exchange. After lunch, they met with president Mike Deputy and sponsoring club member Dr. Mohammed Sbia Members of Salt Lake s new Rock Rotary recently visited Salt Lake Rotary Club s meeting. Invitation to all Rockers: Join us on Tuesdays. Smiles! 12

13 Rotary Club 24 Italian Rotarian Roberto Busetto, Veterinary Professor of the University of Padova, Italy (at podium), exchanges banners with Club 24 s Russ Fericks, while Bill Child (left) and Brett Sutherland look on. Got Glasses? Rosemary Hullinger, Paul Harris Society Coordinator and a member of the Tooele Rotary Club, is asking for our assistance for the District Conference in Puerto Penasco. As you know there is a lot of sunshine in Mexico and most of the people cannot afford sunglasses to protect their eyes. So to assist, Rosemary is asking us to collect as many pairs of sunglasses as possible. The glasses need to be new or like new (no scratches). Also, they re collecting any prescription glasses or reading glasses which are no longer needed. They will clean and process the glasses and donate to The Hope Alliance. Bring the glasses to any weekly meeting or the Rotary office before May 15. Thank you for your assistance in this project.
