2 What is the Arch Klumph Society? Arch C. Klumph founded Rotary Club of Cleveland, Ohio in 1911 and was the Rotary President. Addressing the 1917 convention in Atlanta, Georgia, he eloquently promoted the idea of endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world. That year, the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri, made the first gift of $26.50 to the fledgling fund. When the endowment had grown significant enough to require administrators to manage it, the Rotary Foundation was born and Klumph was selected as one of its first trustees. The Arch Klumph Society was created in 2004, during Rotary International s centennial celebration, as a meaningful way to recognize the Foundation s highest-level donors. The society s first dinner was held the following year. Gene Banks and Ted Schmidt celebrate Ted s induction into the Arch Klumph Society. 2

3 Arch Klumph Society Theodore G. Schmidt, Jr. and Elizabeth E. Schmidt Rotary Club of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Theodore Ted G. Schmidt, Jr. has been a Rotarian since 1977 when he joined the Rotary Club of Concord, California, USA. He served as the club s president in In 2006, Ted joined the Rotary Club of Salt Lake City. Ted has worked on Rotary projects both on the local and international scale. He is proud of Rotary s role in the fight to eradicate polio and also of his club s scholarship program for high school students and grade school tutoring program, among many others. From 1950 to 1981, Ted served as a district manager and regional personnel manager for JCPenney Co. From 1981 to 1998, he was the owner of several luggage and gift stores. Ted s wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Ellis Schmidt, passed away in Together, Ted and Elizabeth had three children and two grandchildren. Ted s father was also a Rotarian, as are Ted s brother and sister-in-law. 3

9 Salt Lake Rotary Cluster Meetings April 18, 2017 Pay a visit to one of our fellow Rotarians and learn about how they spend their time away from Rotary. It s a great opportunity to see some of the businesses and organizations that support Rotary. YOU MUST RESERVE YOUR PLACE by ing brett.sutherland@afpartners.org, by calling Brett at x158, or by speaking with him at a luncheon. Hurry, spots can go quickly! RSVP by April 12. America First Randi Jackson, host The Innovation Center is an entirely new banking experience. Designed to be part branch, part learning workshop, and part tech playground, it's a unique space where America First members, along with the rest of the community, can get hands-on access to relevant, state-of-the-art technology and financial systems, learn about new tools and opportunities within the credit union and community, and give real-time feedback about what kind of experience they want to have with the credit union in the future. The first thing that you'll probably notice is that the Innovation Center isn't like the other America First branches you're used to. It's been built not only to showcase cutting-edge hardware and tools, but to let you experiment with them. Of course, you can still make withdrawals and deposits, apply for loans and other services, meet with experts to discuss your financial plans and choices, and anything else you can do at a traditional branch. You'll just be doing all of that in a whole new way. Ronald McDonald House Charities Carrie Romano, host Please join us for a cluster meeting hosted by Carrie Romano, CEO for Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Intermountain Area. Rotarians will enjoy a delicious lunch from Canella s and tour the beautiful and newly expanded Ronald McDonald House conveniently located at 935 E. South Temple. Learn about the life-changing mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities and the world class specialty pediatric care that brings more than 3,500 patient families to Salt Lake City each year. Rotarians and guests are welcome and invited! Peak Alarm Don Weakley, host Jerry Howe, owner of Peak Alarm, has an on-site museum of alarm industry equipment that dates back to the late 1800s. It is probably in the top five collections in the US. We will give a tour of the museum and explain how the industry started before the phone companies and how the phone company piggybacked on the establish network of the Alarm Industry. Attendees will also take a tour of our Peak Audio Video and our UL Central Station which there are only three of in the state. We intend on having a Hawaiian Luau, with a roasted pig, teriyaki chicken and authentic Hawaiian dancers. 9 Cluster Meetings Options Page 1 of 3

Learn more about Legacy Tree Genealogists through Lee Benson s recent Deseret News article here. Legacy Books and Riverton Legacy Home John Catron Let John Catron host you at his historic home in southern Salt Lake Valley, just five minutes from I-15. In 2007 he and his wife, Barbara, began restoring Riverton's first church and schoolhouse, and then added onto it their beautiful southern-style estate home. Take a tour of the grounds and home to learn some of the efforts they put forth in preserving the heritage of the many people who can trace their ancestors through the schoolhouse which has been a church, a meeting place, a dance hall, a post office, a blacksmith shop, and a home over the last 137 years. John is dedicated to preserve the stories of our past, and you'll see how closely the effort to remember early Riverton ties in with his company, Legacy Books, and their desire to save family, community, and corporate legacies. We'd love to have you over. Cluster Meetings Options Page 3 of 3 11

12 Acts of Kindness Report March, 2017 Rotary Bee Two families lost everything when their apartment house caught on fire. The Salt Lake Rotary Club through the Acts of Kindness Committee was able to provide beds for the children in March. In addition, the committee approved six applications for help with an emergency medical procedure, utility bills and rent. The grants the Acts of Kindness Committee gave in March helped 24 people including 15 children. Unexpected situations are often disastrous to a person who is struggling to provide a home and food for their family. It is gratifying to be able to help these people regain their footing and continue forward. Thanks to the Rotary Club and to our generous benefactor the Anderson-Hatch Foundation we are able to give our fellow citizens peace of mind. 12

The group served pizza, granola bars, apple pie and ice cream, along with blue Gatorade that's favored by the clients. The youths and facility managers were very grateful for Rotary Club 24's service. The Committee needs volunteers for both Boys' and Girls' Club and VOA Homeless Teens dinner projects. While it only takes a couple of hours each month, the long term rewards are immeasurable. Volunteers are needed at the Boys' and Girls' Club for dinner service on April 19 and May 17. The Committee is also looking for teams and team captains for May 10 and June 14 VOA Homeless Teen Resource Center dinners. And finally, 8-10 volunteers are needed for the YWCA preschool on May 11. If you can volunteer, please contact Teri Jensen at tjensen@upbslc.com or Club 24 thanks XMISSION for our web hosting service.
