3 The HUB 3 This Week This is Rotary Tonight May 3: This is Rotary and other matters Last Meeting as recalled by Allen Horrell I t was the Loyal Toast, not the Royal Toast in the hands of John Dodd, who attempted a toast to Australia, to which most responded The Queen! I welcomed the guests, and read a long list of apologies, 14 in all. I departed from my script to read an from Raffaella Tiscar in Italy, and as a result completely skipped the Anniversaries and Birthdays, which mistake was to prove expensive later on. Instead I introduced PP Graham Metcalfe whose Vocational talk covered a life in the vice trades of the tobacco and liquor industry, as Graham put it. He was retrenched by the tobacco company and after a brief stint working for Tony Abboud decided real estate was not his forte, then went on to work for PP Ross Rocca at Midway Cellars. He made no mention (but PDG Les Whitcroft did) of his Rotary career, and the massive input he has had fundraising for Ryde Rotary. His Service above Self has allowed us to do good in the world to a far greater extent than would have been possible otherwise. After dinner I circulated two attendance lists, one for Exchange Night and one for the East Timor RYLA Trivia night, chasing the other two already in circulation. Then I reminded everyone that this was our Club Birthday, Easter Friday: the club will be 65, having been Chartered in I have worked out a Ryde Rotary method of establishing what generation you belong to: If you are older than Ryde Rotary, you belong to the Builder generation, Baby Boomers are those born before our Silver Anniversary, Gen X were born between our Silver and Gold, and everyone born after that is Gen Y! PR Director Stefan Sojka claimed a great PR coup for getting an article in TWT ( On page 47! interjected PP Geoff), before giving John Mazlin credit for organising it and getting a photo he had taken himself published with it. TWT even printed our thanks to our sponsors. For the Community Service committee Nora Etmekdjian spoke on Red Shield and John Mazlin spruiked the Mothers' Day working bee at the Dodd s residence on Wednesday 4 th May. Geoff Brennan spoke on Pride of Workmanship and then it was time for Anna Gossweiler s Exchange Student weekly report, taking up where her post card from Safari left off: after the endless rain of Queensland the exchange students finally saw the sun in Alice Springs: it was so nice! They travelled to Coober Pedy by bus: in all, they travelled 12,000km by bus during the Safari, waking at 4am each morning to leave by 5am and stopping for breakfast on the road. This gave the students lots of time to (Continued on page 4 )
4 The HUB 4 Last Week... continued bond, when they weren t asleep. At a Prison they stayed at, near Adelaide, a retired prison guard told them the prisoners liked Vegemite because they got high after injecting it. It doesn t work, said PP Geoff. PP Graham Metcalf won the spackle but drew a disappointing Queen of Spades and consoled himself with a bottle of Rose. Serjeant-at-Arms Patrick was quick to fine Geoff for his vegemite-related drug experiences, Stefan for having a colossal ego, Geoff again for puncturing it. I got an individual fine for every anniversary and Birthday I failed to read at the start of the meeting after I ran out of money, the fines kept coming til Bernadette was penniless too! Then it was time for PP Martin Aston to introduce our guest speakers, one of whom he knows quite well: Angela Aston and Wilma & Martin Kippers who spoke on their Yukon River Quest. We thrilled to their adventures along 740km of river paddling, escaping the Five Fingers of Death in the Land of the Midnight Above-Martin & Angela Aston, Wilma & Martin Kippers with President Allen. Right Yukon... On Top of The World. Sun. As a promotion for the event I must say the Hours and hours of continuous paddling, endless rain, Going over the side and so forth made me glad I was hearing about it at a Rotary meeting rather than being there myself. The ladies were aided by a support team of Martin, Martin, Martin, Mike and Mandrew! For the record they completed the race after 68 hours and 23 minutes of paddling, and then went to a party in Dawson City. The vote of thanks was given by Hameed Fazal. I thanked our visitors, especially our partners, and reminded members about the ANZAC Day Service at Tebbutt Lodge. Allen Horrell

6 The HUB 6 Red Shield Appeal 28th & 29th May R ed Shield Appeal is the The Salvation Army s major annual fund raiser. The Salvos work focuses on assisting people in need. In order to be able to carry out this great work they need to meet the target of the Appeal for this year which is $79 million. The National Doorknock Appeal is on 28th and 29th May. Our Rotary Club has been helping the Salvos for over the past fifteen years. This year we need both collectors and drivers. The later are needed to help members of the James Ruse High School Interact Club to participate. If you can help please contact me on or me on: norartin@hotmail.com.au Nora Etmekdjian
7 The HUB 7 Anzac Day Commemorative Service Top Some of the residents and Rotarians at the commemorative service. Above Bugler Matt Laz dozen Ryde Rotarians attended the Anzac A Commemorative Service at WA Tebbutt Lodge in Dundas on Monday 25th April. The weather was uninviting but the service uplifting and positive. Tebbutt Lodge s centre manager, Hagar Lesianawai introduced chaplain Sharon Chapman who led the service. Special guests, Parramatta MP, Dr Geoff Lee and members of Ryde Rotary were welcomed, along with residents, family and friends. President Allen ably read the requiem prior to a refreshingly brief address by Geoff Lee. We sang the usual two hymns (with accompaniment from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Choir of Kings College Cambridge) O God Our Help in Ages Past and Abide With Me and the Last Post and Reveille was again bugled by Matt Laz. Our thanks go to Cadets from 8 th Brigade, Timor Barracks for their regular attendance and their continued enthusiasm for this event. Their presence contributed enormously to this important occasion. David James Birthday wishes... Dear President Allen, On behalf of the members of Eastwood Rotary (your Daughter club) I would like to wish Ryde Rotary (our Mother club) a very happy 65th birthday. Well done and may you continue to have many happy, active and productive Rotary years ahead. We are only young (coming up 44 years) but we're catching up to you. Congratulations and best wishes again from your Daughter club. Robert Dive, Treasurer
