3 Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn, Michigan Page 3 Things Above from Fr. Bilot On this first Sunday of Lent (yes, it is early and, yes, it is upon us), we are challenged to embrace this time with confidence and hope! Over the years, despite my non-affection for the time of Lent, I know that, spiritually, it is very good for me. I also realize we must listen to the Scriptures, especially Jesus' exhortation on Ash Wednesday to be a people of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Today s Gospel smacks us in the face...dealing with the temptations of life: power, prestige and believing we are god! Lent allows us to enter into our being to see what makes us tick. Is our motivation to gain power or to look good (in all its forms), and to somehow think we do not need God? To temper our temptations, Jesus gives us the basics to move away from evil temptations and to live in freedom. Yes, freedom. Prayer. What will be different for us this Lent in terms of our prayer life? Do we need to pick up a Catholic book on how to pray? Can we make time to attend a daily Mass or two during the week? Can we make time for Stations of the Cross on Friday evening? Can we make time for the Lectio Divina series every other Friday after Stations? Can we stop in at the Adoration Chapel and spend time with the Lord in prayer? These are examples of how we can enter into a deeper relationship with the Lord through prayer and worship. Almsgiving. Perhaps it is time to let go of what we do not need. Or, to sacrifice and let go of what we do need. There are so many people who are hurt, hungry, and struggling while we are comfortable. Giving away our time, our talent, and our treasure is a sacrifice. Parting is difficult, but once we let go, we find a freedom, an opening, which allows us to grow closer to the Lord in our hearts. Stuff, hurt, bitterness and pride close the door to the Lord. Giving away what keeps us comfortable helps us understand the cross. Most of us do not necessarily like the cross, but the cross is good. It brings true freedom and an honest life. Almsgiving is giving of ourselves and helping others. Again, we are blessed as a parish to have the CSA (Catholic Services Appeal in the Archdiocese of Detroit) as a means to help the wider church and its service to the people in southeast Michigan. As Jesus states, we should not let the right hand know what the left hand is doing. By contributing to the CSA, we assist the Church in taking care of the needs in our area. Hopefully, you have received your letter in the mail. By giving to the CSA, we follow Jesus' command to give alms. If you do not have the funds immediately available, you may use the rice bowl, whereby each day/week, money is added to the bowl throughout the forty days of Lent so that by the end of Lent, the contribution we are asked to give is achieved. I, too, will be giving alms this Lent by contributing to the CSA. Fasting. Do we need to fast from food? Gossiping? Negative attitudes? Laziness? Habits and addictions? Do we need to fast from our fears of perception from our neighbors, country, and world? Fear is not freedom. Understanding and charity dispel fear. We can use this Lent time to work through our demons, so that on Good Friday, they can die at the foot of the cross. Give it a try; we will be better Christians for it. I pray these ideas will be of help. In prayer with you during this holy time. Fr. Jim Bilot RULES FOR FAST & ABSTINENCE According to the 1983 revision to Canon law, and the U.S. Bishops, rules are as follows: Abstinence - Age 14 & Older Abstinence from eating meat is to be observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday & the Fridays of Lent. Eggs, milk products, condiments made of animal fat, chicken broth, consommé, soups flavored with meat, gravies or sauces are permitted. Fast - Ages Days of fast are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. One full meal a day is permitted; the combination of other meals must be less than the full meal. When health or ability to work would be affected, Canon law does not apply. If you have questions concerning fast/abstinence, please consult one of our parish priests. 4 Page 4 Fr. John Kopson s Commentary Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn, Michigan CSA and Giving In my column last week, I began to share with you an eye-opening article entitled The Parish: Maintenance or Mission (By: Brian Starks, PhD.). This article covers the topic of Catholic charitable giving/tithing. Brian Starks, who is a professor of sociology, makes an interesting connection between tithing and living out the mission of the Church. He states that, When we compare Catholics to other Christians in the US, we find Catholics are less likely than other Christians to report a live the mission approach to discussions of money in their parish, and instead describe a greater focus on paying the bills. For instance, we asked, When your religious congregation talks about giving money, does it tend to talk about people s responsibility to help pay the congregation s bills or does it focus on opportunities for spiritual growth and vision for the religious congregation s mission? Whereas almost nine in ten Evangelicals and eight in ten Mainline Protestants indicate that mission and spiritual growth are emphasized in discussions of giving money, only about six in ten Catholics similarly indicate this. The remaining Catholics (almost four out of every ten) report a focus on their responsibility to pay the bills within their own parish. This lack of focus on mission is further substantiated when we explore specific questions on communication and planning regarding mission and vision. For example, only 18% of parish-connected Catholics strongly agree that their parish does an excellent job of communicating its mission, as compared to 32% of Mainline Protestants and 49% of Evangelical Protestants who strongly agree with the same statement. Starks poses a good question for us to ponder: Do I view my tithing/sunday giving as a way to help pay the parish s bills or do I believe that my tithing is carrying out the mission of Christ and His Catholic Church? Before you answer this question, let s first answer the question of: What is the mission of Christ and His Catholic Church? In Matthew s Gospel, just before He ascended into Heaven, Jesus instructs us to: Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you (Matthew 28: 19-20). Here we see that the mission of Christ and His Catholic Church (meaning us) is the salvation of souls. Do we believe that our words, actions, and giving are indeed making new disciples for the sake of their salvation? Do we truly believe that our words, deeds, and giving are furthering the mission of Christ and His Catholic Church? Or do we still just think that we are only paying the bills? Please take time to pray over these questions. Let us work together to further our mission (the mission of the Church) through our thoughts, words, deeds, and giving. CSA is the opportunity to put our faith into action. God Bless You! Fr. John A Life-Saving Opportunity for DC Ushers and Worship Commission Ministry Members and Families A CPR, AED and Basic First Aid Training Class will be held on February 20, 2016 in the DC High School All Purpose Room (APR) from 10AM to 2PM. Easter Day 9:30 11:30 1:00 Name: Number Helping: Phone: Best Time to Call: I am also looking for helpers for Tre Ore Services on Good Friday. If you could help for an hour or two or even three, I would greatly appreciate it. Please give me a call at or me at the above address. Have you ever asked yourself, Why am I so fortunate? Why me? Why have I avoided great tragedy or loss? Why am I healthy? Why do I have so much? If you ve asked any of those questions, you ve probably also considered ways to express your gratitude to the Lord. Lent is the perfect time to act on those feelings of humility, recognizing the source of our life and all we have. Jesus encouraged us to express our humility by not seeking worldly wealth, attention and repayment. Instead, he advises us to be unselfishly merciful. For example: Rather when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous. (Luke 14:13-14) Thanks to your ongoing donations to our church poor box (on the back wall of the church), the St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) is able to serve many poor people in our community. The need is great, and we re very grateful to have the resources to respond. During this Year of Mercy, if you would like to consider becoming a server at the banquet for the poor, come and check out the next SVdP meeting. You may find this ministry is exactly the answer you ve been seeking. Next SVdP Meeting: Tuesday, February 16-7:00 PM Sacred Heart Parish Office - Lower Level

As we celebrate 25 years, we hope you will consider being a part of this event, by attending, volunteering, donating an item, becoming an advertiser or becoming a sponsor. Contact Connie DiMarco at or connie@divinechild.org for more information. We collected a total of fifty-six units of whole blood on Sunday, plus four doublered units for a grand total of sixty units collected. We finished at 107.1% of goal for the day. The total blood collected has the potential to help save 172 lives in our community. Please pass on my thanks on behalf of the American Red Cross to all the Divine Child parishioners that donated or tried to donate. The recent severe winter weather since January 1 has forced the cancellation of more than 300 blood drives, resulting in more than 9,500 donations uncollected, further depleting an already low winter supply. The units everyone donated will go a long way in making up our deficit. Here are all the numbers from your blood drive on Sunday, January 17, 2016: Blood drive goal: People were registered 6 People were willing to donate but could not for minor medical reasons or time constraints 2 First time donors 56 People successfully donated one whole blood unit 2 Donors successfully donated two units of double red cells for a total of 4 products Again, a total of 60 units were donated on Sunday, giving area hospital patients a chance to once again enjoy good health. Our next blood drive is scheduled for Sunday, April 17, 2016 and we look forward to another successful day! Sincerely, Dennis Sandoval Donor Recruitment Representative Attention Dearborn Voters: Starting with the March 8, 2016 Election, Divine Child Elementary School will no longer be used as a polling location. 9 Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn, Michigan Page 9 Meet Candidate Alexandra Mackalski Initially when I began the RCIA process, it was just because I wanted my fiancé Anthony and I to be of the same religion. However, it has become much more than that. Converting from the Lutheran to Catholic has truly strengthened my personal relationship with Jesus and has enriched my life. I am so excited to continue this process and for Anthony and I to go into our marriage with a solid foundation. A word from Alexandra s Sponsor, Anthony DiPaolo: I'm honored to be sponsoring my Fiancé, Alexandra, throughout her conversion to the Catholic faith. Growing up as a 'Cradle Catholic, I have always felt satisfied with my level of faith, but struggled to regularly fulfill my religious obligations throughout college and into adult life. RCIA has not only given me a better understanding of our religious values as Catholics, but it has been an opportunity to relearn and build a new religious foundation for my adult and family life. Thank you Fr. Jim, Fr. John, and Jodi Ann for providing such a welcoming program. Meet Candidate Chris Ploucha: The RCIA process has been very humbling and insightful for me. I had always been part of the non-denominational church throughout my marriage but when my wife and I decided to send my children to DC, I decided that I need to learn and be part of the same things I was asking of my children. Choosing a sponsor was fairly easy. I wanted a sponsor that could understand the trials of having several children, one who was as passionate about coaching and mentoring as I am, and someone with whom I could share life lessons with. I am very happy to say that my sponsor is John Filiatraut and that with his mentorship as a coach, friend and sponsor, I have continued to grow as a man of Catholic faith and a role model for my children and the student athletes of Divine Child. A word from Chris s Sponsor, John Filiatraut: I was blessed and honored when Chris asked me to be his sponsor. As a lifelong Catholic, the RCIA program has polished-up things I thought I knew well, and also taught me new things about our faith. While Chris asked me to help him through his journey in faith I find that I am the one learning many lessons! Going through the RCIA process with Chris has truly been a gift! Meet Catechumen Ryan Pitts: I was raised a protestant Christian, though my parents believed baptism should be a personal choice between you and God so I was never baptized. As I grew older my family became more separated from church. I began dating my fiancée, Becky, and through the course of our time together, I started going to Mass with her and her family. Now that we are going to be married, I decided it would be best for myself and our family if I became Catholic. I have had a great experience going through the RCIA process and received much support from my family and sponsor. Now I just hope to learn how to be a good Catholic and become closer with God. A word from Sponsor, Ron Ryczko: I was honored when asked to be Ryan s RCIA sponsor. He is a great guy and sharing this journey with him is a blessing as we embark on this spiritual quest. I have the opportunity to share with him our beautiful faith which I am privileged to learn more about and to develop a closer relationship with the Lord.

True story After reading in the church paper about the weekend Men s Retreat at St. Paul of the Cross, one husband said aloud to his wife that he would like to go on a retreat. Seizing the opportunity, she signed him up! As he entered the house after work one Friday night, he saw his packed suitcase and some papers placed by the front door. Was she throwing him out? Quickly sifting through his conscience for all the wrong he may have done - he inquired and learned that she was not throwing him out - but had signed him up for the retreat and provided the map. He went and by the end of the weekend realized spiritual enrichment and camaraderie with other men. So sign up your husband for a retreat it s a great Valentine s Day gift. Join the Men from Divine Child on Friday evening March 18 through Sunday morning March 20. To learn more call Jim Bologna at (248) or Matt Wolocko at (734) You can also call the retreat center at (313) or check out their website at mens-retreat-weekend-24/
