This past month we ve had some fun together, we have celebrated together, and we have given of our time, talent, and treasure together. What will April bring? Thanks to everyone who came to church on Easter Sunday; the children filled baskets with eggs at the annual Easter egg hunt, and we all filled our tummies at the potluck breakfast in honor of our new members. The day before, March 31st, many of you volunteered for the buildings and grounds work day. The church was positively sparkling when I arrived Sunday morning! And to think that, in between the cleanup Saturday and the Sunday morning potluck breakfast, there was a major event with scores of people throughout the building, it says a lot about our volunteers who helped set up and clean up for Josef Patchen s farewell party. Let me just say how wonderful the occasion was, as we said thank you and goodbye to Joe. Three former ministers sent greetings, including Rev. Roy Reynolds, who delivered his in person. The choir surprised Joe by revamping his own composition I Sing of Joy, renaming it I Sing for Joe and altering the lyrics to bid him farewell. They surprised him even further by asking him to accompany them one last time to sing it! We will miss Joe terribly, and at the same time we thank the musicians who have stepped in to contribute their talent as they make memorable music for the Sunday services. Thank you to Lyn Dennison and her amazing pledge drive crew, who wrapped up this year s campaign at the end of March. Another celebration, this time to formally mark the end of the pledge drive, will be held in mid-april. Let me also point to another date to be announced soon: sometime this spring we will be marking the retirement of our long-serving Director of Religious Education, Ruth Garrison. Watch out for the date and time in our E-nnouncements during April. And finally, we have an exciting opportunity to come together as a congregation for a mini-retreat in May. Please read the article in this newsletter about Camp Long. We will hold our Service at the Shore there on May 20 th and I hope that many of you will come the day before and enjoy the great facilities the camp offers because we re better together. We will be giving details of the cost and registration after Masters week, and hope to be able to offer financial assistance to anyone who wants to go and cannot afford the entire registration cost. Whether you are staying home for Spring break or traveling, I wish you all the best for April. I, for one, am glad to see the cold weather go and the warmth return! In faith and friendship, Rev. Gaye
2 From the President Updates from the UUCA Board of Trustees March was a busy month for the UUCA Board of Trustees. Below are some highlights. Personnel Welcome to the UUCA team Joe Zuchowski! In Joe s role as sexton he will be providing clean-up services and assist in getting the church back in order after special events. The search team for an acting director of lifespan faith development is currently working hard on locating the best candidate for the position. The worship team and music committee are collaborating to ensure we continue to have excellent music for our Sunday services. Later in the calendar year, these two groups will explore long-term options for church music. Pledge drive Thank you to Lyn Dennison and everyone else who worked on this year s pledge drive team. There was considerable time and effort put into this year s endeavor. We are moving into a tighter budget year due to fluctuations in pledges but watch your weekly e-announcements for updates on the final totals. And do make sure to join the congregation after the service on April 15 for the Post Pledge Party. We will celebrate with wings and a variety of salads. Long-range planning The long-range planning team is moving ahead and gathering information and ideas in order to share next steps with the congregation. Non-monetary gifts From time to time, church member and friends have generously offered to donate new and used items to the church (furniture, for example). Please check with the office administrator, minister, or board president before you make such a donation. We want to make sure we can find a use for the item. It would be a shame to have an item donated that would ultimately not be used when other community organizations might benefit from that donation. Key change No, this item is not musical (pardon the pun!).in keeping with best practices, we will be changing the church locks at the switchover to the new fiscal year this summer. It has been many years since we changed the locks and the new fiscal year provides perfect timing. Pam Hayward President, UUCA Board of Trustees Second Sunday Special Collection March 11 th On the second Sunday each month, members and friends of UUCA donate funds specifically contributed to organizations that do work consistent with our UU principles. The SJC shares responsibility for selecting the recipient of this collection during the year with the UUCA Board. The recipient for the month of April is Feathered Friends Forever Rescue and Sanctuary located in Harlem, GA Feathered Friends works to improve the lives of companion parrots that are no longer wanted or able to be cared for by their owners by providing them with a permanent safe haven. Many hear of Feathered Friends and send their birds by air from around the US to Bob. Bob takes them in, adds them in with others he already has and cares for them. Feathered Friends offers public education and is open to the public on weekends 11am 5pm. More information can be found at: Memorial Stone for Janet Reichard submitted by Margaret Tuck, Memorial Garden chair The Memorial Garden Committee requests members and friends to consider making a donation to the Memorial Garden for the purpose of providing a Memorial Stone for Janet Reichard. Janet was an early and dedicated member of our church. She supported civil rights, animal rights and studied a variety of intellectual pursuits. Over her long years of active church membership she served on our Board and numerous committees. During her last years of life she was ill and unable to attend services, but faithfully maintained connections with members and friends. Janet died August 2017, aged 89. We feel a memorial stone is a fitting tribute to her long years of membership and support. Please make a donation by using our envelope system or mailing a check to the church designating the purpose. For further questions, please contact Margaret Tuck: marg.tuck@gmail.com Page 2
3 Camp Long Church Retreat and Service at the Shore May 19-20, 2018 For several years now, UUCA members and friends have traveled to a local lake for an outdoor service in the early summer; it is always a special time to gather for worship in a beautiful natural setting, followed by a delicious potluck lunch, and afternoon activities at the lakeside, such as canoeing and swimming. This year we are changing the venue from Baker Creek State Park in McCormick to Camp Long (4-H Leadership Center) in Aiken, SC, and we are inviting everyone to come to this beautiful 400-acre property for a retreat weekend Saturday afternoon May 19 through Sunday afternoon May 20th. We ll be able to enjoy waterfront activities including: beach area, kayaks and canoes, paddle boats, swimming, and fishing. In addition, here are some of the recreational activities we can look forward to: climbing wall, 500-foot zip line over the lake, softball field, tennis and badminton, airnasium basketball court, campfire area with seating. Meeting areas for our group include a Vesper Ring and fire pit. We will take advantage of the lodging (cabins with bunks) and dining hall (dinner and breakfast). Our Sunday service at 11am will be on the dock overlooking the lake, followed by a potluck lunch. This is a retreat that will be affordable and accessible for all ages and abilities. The sign-up and pricing information will be published in mid -April in our weekly E-nnouncements, where there will also be a link to registration and payment. Spread the word to UUCA members and friends, and plan to join us for a weekend retreat to remember! To see more about the facility: camplongsc.com Page 3
4 E MacNabb I guess you could call me a bit of a wanderer. Raised mostly in Austin, Texas, I spent three years in the Air Force in Arkansas, where I trained as a plumber, had a son, then cross-trained as a newspaper editor. Subsequently, we lived on The Farm in Summertown, Tennessee, then moved to Florida, where I cultivated my passion for academia, earning a BA and an MA. The PHD was earned in New York and Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. My first teaching jobs were in Illinois and Indiana, where I had my second son. Next came Virginia, where I began a career directing a collaborative multi-university sustainability program. This took me to colleges in Kentucky and Texas. After retiring, I entered the Peace Corps. There, on a small island in the Pacific, I assisted K12 teachers and principals with accreditation. My older son now lives in Oregon, and the younger is here in the Navy (which is how I ended up in Augusta). Besides traveling, I enjoy reading, hiking, and nature in general. Welcome Our New Members Ayana and Nathan Campoli The journey of the Campoli Family began in Massachusetts where Nathan and Ayana met and fell in love at the First Parish in Malden, Universalist Congregation. They were wedded in October 2013 at the Gothic church building, and welcomed their first born, Elianna a year later who would later be dedicated before the beloved members of the congregation. Through job opportunities, they moved from Boston to South Dakota in 2016 and then to Augusta, GA where they have resided since August, 2017, just two hours away from grandparents in Atlanta. Having a desire for the warm embrace of community, they immediately searched for a new UU congregation and found what they were looking for at the UUCA. In January 2018, they welcomed their second child, DeAngelo. We are delighted to become members of UUCA! Thank you for your welcoming. We've enjoyed getting to know you, and look forward to the next phase of our journey with you! A final farewell was sung to our Music Director, Josef Patchen on March 31st as we bid a Fond Farewell after his 25 years with UUCA. Page 4
5 Looking for a way to show your appreciation for someone s service to the church, to the community, or to celebrate the birth of a child, someone s birthday, a marriage, an anniversary, a graduation, or recent achievement? Are you missing someone special - human or pet? Consider making a Gift of Honor in their name to the church. Additionally, it is in April that we highlight the environment (Earth Day and Arbor Day) and celebrate the fools. Please consider making a Gift of Honor in the name of someone who has contributed to making our living space more livable or, since there is a bit of a fool in each of us, for yourself. Gifts of Honor Received - In Honor of Chris Palmer - - In Memory of Don Law - - A Fond Farewell to Josef Patchen - This program is organized by the Budget Team. A check or cash-in-an-envelope should be clearly marked Gift of Honor and be sure to tell us who or what you are honoring. All Gifts of Honor will support the General Fund. Gifts of Honor may be placed with the offering on Sunday mornings or sent to or dropped off in the church office. Gifts of Honor received are announced in the UUCA Newsletter. Page 5

Before-service Presentation: The Mental Health Stigma of Muslim Americans Sunday, April 15 th at 10am Ari West, Augusta University Ari is a Counselor Education student at Augusta University, visiting us to bring her research findings on an important topic. Even though the mental health care system has improved over the recent years, there are many populations of people who terminate services prematurely or do not seek services at all. The stigma associated with mental health is a prominent issue for all persons with a mental illness. However, individuals who face cultural adversities such negative stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination are at increased risk for stigma. Previous research has even suggested that minority groups have higher levels of mental health stigma compared to majority groups. For the sake of this presentation, the presenter will be discussing the mental health issues associated with the Muslim population as well as some considerations when interacting with Muslim Americans. I will be discussing contemporary social perceptions and discrimination experiences Muslim Americans were confronted with post 9/11 as well as implications for understanding their worldview and religious values. Through sustained demonstrations of knowledge, awareness, and skillful assistance allies can work together to diminish the mental health stigma associated with the Muslim population. Page 6
