1 INDIANA SOCIETY OF THE SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION HOOSIER PATRIOT Volume XLIX No. 1 October 2017 Indianapolis, Indiana The Hoosier Patriot is a quarterly publication of the Indiana Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. While the editors and contributors strive to provide accurate and timely information, please consult local chapters and the Indiana Society web site for updated and additional information concerning specific meetings and events. Welcome to Autumn, Compatriots The heat of summer has finally passed, I hope. School is back in session and kids are enjoying fall break in many districts. It is now the season of apples, pumpkins, even though the fall foliage has been disappointing here in northwest Indiana. So much seems to have changed since I grew up in Dubuque, Iowa decades ago. But then, as now, preparation for winter was fairly easy. One cannot help but think back to the hard work our ancestors were putting in to make sure they were ready for the coming winter. My 2 nd great grandfather arrived from Germany in the 180s and took up farming in northern New York, east of Watertown. I can t imagine the preparations winter took back then. My furthest back American ancestor arrived on the Mayflower and his descendants spread slowly across New England. Theirs was a journey of true bravery. As Revolutionary times approached, fall was also an active season for our ancestors, that took them away from preparing their families for the coming winter. History shows us they were also busy fighting for their liberties and the establishment of our country. Highlights include Stamp Act Congress (Oct 176), Continental Congress (Sept 1774), Attack on St Johns, Canada begins Canada Campaign (Sept 177), Second Congress (Sept 177), US Navy founded (Oct 177), Saratoga NY (Sept & Oct 1777), Battle of Capes (Sept 1781), Yorktown (Oct 1781), Treaty of Paris (Sept 1783). A more complete listing can be found at the National Park Service, numbering 30 events for 177 alone! Scroll through the lists by month and year and it is clear how much our ancestors did and lived through. These sacrifices were not made just by the lives of men. Women, children, and men too old or infirm to fight were left to the tasks of maintaining homes and farms. They finished harvest, cared for animals, and put up food and firewood for the winter. They carried on commerce as best they could. Nobody, by gender, race, religion, or age, was immune from the effects of the Revolution. We are often reminded of Rosie the Riveter, but I suspect the women of 18 th century America were every bit as tough! Autumn leads us into a celebratory season, too. From various fall festivals to Thanksgiving to the religious holidays of many faiths, we have so much to reflect on and give thanks for. Let us all take a moment and remember all the sacrifices our ancestors made during this same season. Always in your humble service, Rob 1
2 Congratulations to the Alexis Coquillard chapter for your first place color guard award in the Bremen Indiana Blueberry Festival parade. 2

Pictured above: Compatriot William Sharp III gave the Chapter an "in period" presentation detailing the experiences of one of his patriot ancestors, Thomas Majors of North Carolina, in the pursuit of Tory Major Patrick Ferguson that ended in the Battle of Kings Mountain, S.C. on October 7, Patriot Majors eventually moved to Kentucky after the war where he resided for the remainder of his life. Compatriot Sharp also answered several questions about the battle and the "Over the Mountain Men" posed by the group in attendance. 4

Pictured below : Compatriot James Lee Pirtle (middle) was inducted into the Society by his sponsor Nicholas Schultz (left) and Clifty Creek Chapter President, Don Perkins. Compatriot Pirtle was a SAR member prior to 1976 and had to reprove his lineage to ensure the line wasn t closed. (Clifty Creek continued on next page)
6 (Continued from previous page) Clifty Creek Chapter members voted to support an effort by the community to place photo banners of local veterans and active duty service members along streets in Madison from Armed Forces Day to shortly after Veterans Day each year. In the group photo, Compatriot Robin Henderson (1 st person, 2 nd row left) accepted a grant from the Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County to help procure brackets, scanning hardware and software, and marketing of the banner project. The photo below is an example of what they may look like. As part of the fun, the chapter sponsored a design contest and the winner will be announced on Veterans Day. 6
7 Pictured above: Robert Cunningham gave an excellent and interesting presentation at our quarterly meeting held on Saturday October 14, His Presentation focused on Revolutionary War Clothing. He displayed numerous uniforms ranging from the continental line uniform to various militia clothing items. He educated the audience on the proper wear and care of Revolutionary War Clothing. At the conclusion of his presentation there were numerous questions, and he aptly answered them all. 7

10 The Branding & Engagement Committee (B&E) has released a tool for SAR Chapters, States, Districts, and National related to Social Media. The SAR Social Media Hashtag Guide will help those using social media know how to use hashtags. Hashtags are an important tool to mark or tag items on social media, making it easier for others to search for and find information. If you were to go to Facebook today and type #SARHistory or #SARPatriotism in the search bar, you will already find posts from some of our members. We want to encourage our SAR Chapters, States, Districts, and National to start using these on their social media accounts especially Facebook and Twitter. The more we all begin using these hashtags, people will begin seeing all the things our Chapters are doing in their communities. This tool is part of a larger Social Media Guide that is currently in development. The guide can be access at either: The SAR area on the website with all the forms and guides: The SAR area on the website for B&E: Helpful Research information Dennis Babbitt, Continental Chapter Secretary, offers this useful link for application research. While it is was created for the DAR, it is equally useful for the SAR. Researching Your Revolutionary War Patriot Ancestor (Continued on next page)
11 (Continued from previous page) An idea for a fund raiser has been proffered. Let your chapter leadership know what you think and if you would support this initiative. The proposal is for a 2019 SAR calendar to help you plan your activities and events. As proposed, the calendar would include items such as: 1) Legal holidays 2) Veterans Days 3) National SAR meetings and related special events 4) District meetings and related special events ) HOD meetings and related special events This will help everyone plan their agendas and avoid calendar conflicts. William Henry Harrison issues Stand Down Request What is Stand Down... We help homeless and low income Veterans in Our Community... November is Homeless Awareness Month, so it is fitting that the Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University has organized a Stand Down to serve the needs of the Greater Lafayette area's homeless and low income veterans. A Stand Down is a community event in which volunteers serve meals, distribute clothing, work at information tables, and provide companionship to homeless veterans. In support of this Stand Down, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) General de Lafayette Chapter are collecting new only socks & underwear. Donated items may be placed in the drop box in the Gathering Space at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Sons of Abraham Synagogue, Mike Raisor Ford/Mazda GMC Cadillac Audi Mercedes and Used Car Dealerships, and the West Lafayette Library starting October 1 through November 1. All collected items will be distributed by the DAR at the Stand Down at the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds on Saturday, November 4, from 9 am-2pm. Thank you for helping those who served our country! 11

15 Indiana SAR LADIES AUXILIARY Indiana Society Color Guard The Indiana Society Color Guard is probably best known for the color and pageantry their uniforms and flags bring to a parade, grave dedication or other community event. Emotions can range anywhere from children's questions and smiles to tears from a veteran's pride and memories. While all of this is true and important, one cannot overlook the wonderful side effect of fellowship with others who share common interests and passions. New members are encouraged for local and statewide participation. There are loaner uniforms available and participation and travel is limited only by your own time and energy. Please consider serving in the Color Guard and experiencing the fellowship of your compatriots and the appreciation of your community. Contact Robert C. Cunningham for more information at rpcunnin@indiana.edu Hoosier Patriot Winter 2017 (July 1 st 2017 September 30 th 2017) The Indiana Ladies Auxiliary Sons of the American Revolution, assists Indiana Society with programs, fund raising, historical education and carrying out its mission of inspiring patriotism and informing others of the contributions of our patriot ancestors.
