1 Guyton Christian Church June 2018 Newsletter Web: Dreams and Visions And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. --Joel 2:28-29 These verses from the book of Joel were prominent in my Pentecost message this year. They were also central to our accepting this assignment to serve Guyton Christian Church. In your many ministries, I can see that you have dared to dream, and to make dreams come true. In your youth and children, I see great potential for GCC to keep dreaming and fulfilling dreams. In your strong family connections sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, all worshiping together I see a common history and a common language that lends itself to prophesy. You know where you ve been as families and as a church, which gives you a foundation from which to see where you want to go as a church. I want to know your dreams and visions regarding this church. Whether you re young or old, sons or daughters, masters or servants, lifelong members or newcomers, we need your ideas. Joel s prophesy says that God has poured out His Spirit on ALL flesh. You are included in that number. I ll be your cheerleader, your ears, and your voice. As pastor, you have given me the catbird seat over this church, where I can see the dreams and visions that haven t yet been shared. You don t need more management; you need encouragement! Here s what I mean by dreams and visions: I dream of a Sunday School class for young adults say ages 18 30, or maybe to 40. It s just the underserved demographic at most churches. The older a church gets, the harder it is to break into leadership. We need this class to enhance participation, which usually leads to volunteerism and leadership. I dream of a youth program that draws teenagers from the community with dedicated facilities and active outreach, a program that our young people can share with pride, a program for which they feel a deep sense of dedicated ownership. I dream of a music venue and meeting hall carved from an old train depot, an historic building that s easy to find and remember. I dream of a music ministry that encourages joyful worship while gently teaching musicianship and the traditional songs of our faith. I dream that it will be a community outreach that draws even unchurched musicians and music lovers into the church. I dream of quarterly church picnics with horseshoes, sack races, volleyball and singing around the campfire. I dream of church singings rooted in history and drawing church members, worshippers and history buffs alike. I dream of testimony services where people face the congregation to tell everyone about what the Lord has done in their lives. These are not exclusive dreams or original ideas. They borrow from many of the dreams that you have already shared. You dreamed of an outreach to the special needs community, and My Father s House was born. You dreamed of feeding the hungry, and The Fillin Station was born. You and other churches dreamed of helping homeless families, and Family Promise was born. Your ancestors dreamed of worshipping in freedom and Antioch Christian Church was born. They dreamed of a bigger church closer to town, and Guyton Christian Church was born. It didn t stop there, and it hasn t stopped yet. What are your dreams and visions? Dreaming doesn t make it so, but nothing happens until somebody dreams it up and envisions it happening. If I only deliver one message beyond salvation in Christ, let it be this: The Holy Spirit is alive and powerful! All the Spirit needs is willing vessels like you and me, willing to do the work that Spirit inspires and to give God the glory. This is not a pipe dream or an unlikely vision, but a demonstrated fact. Look at all you have accomplished! The Holy Spirit has done wonderful things at GCC because you were willing to follow the Spirit s leading. The question is not can we succeed. The answer to that is yes, we can succeed! At what? Ah, there s the real question! What are your dreams and visions? Share them with one another and get ready to see the Holy Spirit move in mighty ways! Yours in Christ, Pastor Joel Guyton Christian Church (DOC), June 2018, Page 1
