Fairchild, adapted) Gracious God, we thank you for calling us together today to worship you as a family of faith. We thank you that we are not alone--that people from all over the world are our brothers and sisters in Christ. But sometimes we forget this, O God. We confess that we do not always open our hearts and lives to you--and through you, to one another. We so often act as if we are alone. Forgive us, O God. Heal our broken hearts, unite our broken families, and mend our broken world. Fill us with your heavenly food this day. Touch us, and make us whole, that we may serve you in the name of Jesus, who taught us to pray THE LORD'S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Do this in remembrance of me. 25 In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. 7 Dear Friends--I hope you will join me for worship as well as Soup and Conversation on Sunday, October 14th. The focus will be on how churches around the country connect with their community and reach new people. We will talk about the best practices of growing churches, what your Vitality Team is currently doing, and how you can get involved in this process. WEEKLY BIBLE STUDY Thursdays, 4:00 to 5:30, at the home of Vin Terrill, 37 Beach Street. For September, we will be studying the lectionary texts for the following Sunday s worship. Text for October 11 will be John 1:43-46 and 2 Corinthians 5: Format of the study is as follows: we begin with sharing joys and concerns, we have a time of prayer (where people are free to pray silently or out loud), and then 2 volunteers read the text out loud, while we all notice which words the Spirit draws our attention to. (This way of reading Scripture is called Lectio Divina. ) We each have the opportunity to share with others the words speak to us, as well as ask questions about the text. We also discuss how the text might apply to our lives today. The study is led by Rev. Marlayna. All are welcome to join us! No prior knowledge of the Bible is necessary. or call Rev. 8 ALTAR FLOWERS Members of the congregation are encouraged to donate altar flowers in remembrance or in honor of loved ones or in celebration of an event. The flowers can be fresh flowers in a vase (even from your garden!), a flowering plant or an arrangement from a local florist. Altar flowers do not need to be large to be beautiful. After the service you can take the arrangement you donated or request that it be given to someone, that the Deacon s choose or you suggest, whose day will be brightened by them. Penny Lapham coordinates flower donations and you can tell her that you are interested in donating or ask her questions about donating by speaking to her after worship, calling her at or ing her at laphenpen@live.com. Please consider helping to brighten our worship with a donation! You can also see dates available and sign up online at diaconate. MY STORY We each have unique journeys of faith. One way to deepen our understanding of them is to share our stories with each other. Once per month, the Vitality Committee welcomes one of you to share your faith journey during Sunday service in brief 2 to 3 minute remarks. We hope you will consider sharing yours. A simple way to organize your thoughts is to answer these 3 questions: 1. What is your early faith history? (1 minute) 2. How did you come to First Parish Church? What is meaningful to you about your participation? (1 minute) 3. Can you share a specific moment of faith, an experience of divine intervention or God's or Jesus' presence in your life? 9 The Christmas Fair is Saturday, Nov. 10! Fall Clean-Outs: The fair closet is looking a little empty! Please remember the White Elephant Rooms as you do fall clean-outs -- small household items, kitchenware, holiday decorations, children's toys and sports equipment. White Elephant Drop-Off Hours: Saturday mornings10-11am and Sundays Oct. 14 and 21 at 9 and 11am at the Magic Years chapel entrance. Or call Allison to arrange a drop-off She can easily pop down to the chapel to meet you. Books: Books and DVDs only. Kids books too. No textbooks or electronics. Clothing Drive: In order for us to donate our White Elephant leftovers to Savers, we must provide Savers gallon bags of used clothing, coats, shoes, boots, accessories, bedding, and towels for Savers to resell. Please start gathering used clothing etc and drop off in the (empty) White Elephant closet in the basement of the Chapel the WEEK OF NOV Fair Meeting and Thank-You Deb DiGiovanni Party. The Fair Committee is sad to lose Deb to the exciting next chapter in South Carolina and will gather to thank for sharing her incredible talent, creativity and on-trend crafts for so many years. Plus a brief Fair meeting. All are welcome! Bring wine or an appetizer. Thursday, October 11 at 6pm at Allison Moir-Smith's home, 42 Forest Street in Manchester. Basket Auction Items Needed: Please support this important part of the Fair! Themed donations work best -- wine, reading, children's crafts, baby items, travel, holiday etc. Items due to Lauren Gudonis by Nov. 4 so she can gussy them up and put them in baskets. Donations of smaller items and services in $20-30 range most welcome. To donate, contact Pam at Neighbors in Need- Love of neighbor Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the United Church of Christ that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. Our Mission Committee will be making a contribution to NIN, in lieu of receiving a congregational offering, but we do want our parishioners to know what types of programs our gift will be supporting. One third of NIN gifts is allocated to the Council for American Indian Ministry (CAIM,) the voice for American Indian people in the UCC. 20 UCC congregations on reservations in the Dakotas, Wisconsin, and Northern Nebraska receive aid from CAIM, as well as a multi-tribal congregation in Minneapolis. In addition many more people from other tribes scattered in multiple other UCC churches receive services from CAIM. The other portion of the NIN gifts is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries (JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants to churches and other organizations. Weekly Food Donations When you go to church Sunday mornings remember to take one item that can be donated to Open Door through the food basket placed in the Narthex. It is easy to forget, but you can think ahead and bring one food item that will be much appreciated by folks who really need our help. 11 The annual First Parish Church Harvest Food Drive helps our neighbors who are struggling to feed their families. Every year our congregation responds generously to the call for food donations to stock the pantries at Beverly Bootstraps and The Open Door. The canned goods and nonperishables that are collected during our Harvest Food Drive assist families and individuals in Beverly, Manchester, Essex, Gloucester, Essex, Ipswich, and Rockport. The Missions Committee, Youth Group, and Sunday School are all cooperating in this important effort. All through the month of October we will be collecting non-perishable food items and on Sunday, October 28th the youth of the church will bring the donations to the altar for a blessing before items are delivered to the food pantries. Items can be dropped in the Chapel conference room, brought to Sunday school or Youth Group or left in the Narthex.
