London Losing s Old Signs Famous Emblems Vanishing as Modern Srucures Are Ereced. London. New building consrucion n Flee sree, on a scale almos comparable o recen consrucion n he Srand, reminds us of he scores of old shop signs ha are being seadily reduced n number along his famous newspaper sree. There s no modern equivalen for hese Eigheenh cenury signs. The adopion of numbered shops arid houses has done away wih he necessiy for wha have become anachronisms. They go back o he days when a radesman was accusomed o adverise ha he "makeh and selleh all sors of leaher-breeches" a he "Sign of he Boo and Breeches," or when an old privae bank was locaed "a he Sign of he Three Squirrels." Nowadays a breeches maker would announce aa his shop was locaed a 7 Flee sree, or a Flee sree bank would give as s address simply Flee sree, EL C. 4. Bu a number of he old shop signs have survived o his day and every ime an»ld building is orn ou o make room for a new one, few more relics disappear. n he Eigheenh cenury, when he ar of he old sign was a is heigh, be bes of ariss were no above supplying hem, and some of hose ha survive are of real arisic value. This s he case a he Cock avern, one of he oldes esablishmens n London's newspaper row. The gilded chanicleer ha hangs ouside is a copy of he original, preserved ndoors. was done by he grea Grlnllng Gibbons himself. Originally he avern sood "a he Sign of he Cock." "Three Squirrels" Gone. Then here s Gosling's bank, where Warren Hasings, Clive and Pope once kep heir accouns. sood "a he Sign of he Three Squirrels," bu he squirrels have been aken down. Gosling's self has been swallowed op by Barclay's bank, one of he "Big Five'' of he London banking world; and n he new building he hree squirrels have been reproduced n he windows. As'for he Sign of he Boo and Breeches, which once sood in Flee sree, even he sie has been forgoen. Wihin he las year or wo, such old signs as he beehive a 64, he hogshead of wine, he Caxon's head, he duke's arms, he race horse, he "sun of righeousness" and he orch exinguisher all of hem once familiar have gone.
