1 Warrenton Presbyterian Church The Warrenton Presbyterian September 2017 The Pastor s Corner It s hard to believe, but this month (September 1 st ) will mark my one-year anniversary of serving as your pastor! It has truly been a wonderful year of ministry here in Warrenton and I am so grateful for the love and support the WPC community has provided to me and my family. I am continually amazed by the passion and commitment of this congregation and look forward to the years ahead serving our Lord together. Our new program year will kick off on Rally Day September 10 th and we will return to our two services at 8:45 am and 11:00 am. This is an excellent time to invite a friend, neighbor, or co-worker to come to church with you. A recent study found that most people who join a congregation did so because they were personally invited by someone they already knew. This is a wonderful time of year to invite someone to join us in our ministries here at WPC! I m looking forward to teaching a class (beginning on September 17 th ) on one of my favorite books of the Bible, the Book of Job, and I hope you re able to join me in exploring Job s timeless story (more info on following page). As I write this article, we are watching the unprecedented flooding in Houston and the surrounding area. We join our prayers with others throughout the nation and world for the people of this region as well as those called to provide relief and assistance. If you are looking for ways to help, there are many wonderful organizations providing relief to this area, including our own denomination s Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. Below is the ending of a prayer written by The Rev. Dr. Laurie Ann Kraus from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance: We ask for sustaining courage for those who are suffering; wisdom and diligence among agencies and individuals assessing damage and directing relief efforts; and for generosity to flow as powerfully as rivers and streams, as we, your people, respond to the deep human needs beginning to emerge in the wake of the storm. In these days of relief, assessment and response, open our eyes, our hearts, and our hands to the needs of your children and the movements of your Spirit, who flows in us like the river whose streams makes glad the city of God, and the hearts of all who dwell in it, and in You. In the name of Christ the Healer we pray, amen. Blessings, Jim WPC Sermons Podcast: A podcast is an audio clip that is available to download and listen to on your phone, computer, tablet, etc. Each week, the audio from Sunday s sermon will be available to download and listen. This will be helpful for our folks when they are traveling and unable to make it to worship, but it will also be helpful for visitors who are looking for a church. It is available via the Apple Podcast and Google Play platforms so you can subscribe directly on your iphone and Android cell phones. More on following page

2 Fall Pastor s Class: Have You Considered My Servant Job? The Joban drama is perhaps the longest-running story in the history of human experience. The biblical Job is but one, even if one of the best, of a cast of characters who has played this role. ~Samuel Balentine, Job, Smyth-Helwys Bible Commentary. Join Pastor Jim beginning September 17th in the fellowship hall for his fall Sunday School class on the Book of Job. The class will walk through the book of Job, exploring themes along the way, but we will also look at how these themes have been interpreted throughout history in art, literature, music and film. Many people have personally experienced Job s story. We will reflect on their journeys as well as our own as we dive into the book that J. Hempel called the struggle for the last truth about God. William Blake, Job Rebuked by His Friends, Wikimedia Commons This class will meet weekly through November 19th, but here is an outline of the first few classes: 9/17, Chapters 1 & 2, Overview: Tragedy and the (im)patience of Job 9/24, Chapters 1 & 2, Prologue: Satan, the Divine Council and Job s Wife 10/1, Chapter 2:11-14:22, 1st Speech Cycle: A Friend in Need is a Job Indeed On Sunday, August 20th, the Rev. Dick Winter celebrated his 95th birthday. Actually, parties took place during the entire week. For those who do not know this, Rev. Winter was the Pastor at WPC for 36 years. He can be found each Sunday on the back pew, singing the hymns and worshipping God. Happy birthday, Rev. Winter! 40+ FABULOUS AND FUN FELLOWSHIP GROUP This Summer we enjoyed concerts and plays. Contact the office with fellowship ideas for the fall. Membership Committee News Please let us know if you are interested in joining WPC. Contact Sherry Hawkins, membership committee chair, at sphawkins03@gmail.com or call the church office at and talk to Mary Hall. You are invited to come and enjoy the WALK BY FAITH STREET FAIR, Saturday, September 30, 10 AM to 4 PM, along 5th Street

3 Your presence is requested at the Warrenton Presbyterian Church Supper Club and Fellowship The WPC Supper Club and Fellowship's primary mission is to provide the opportunity for new and deepening friendships. All are invited. The WPC Supper Club has no agenda; we just eat together and enjoy one another s company. Our hope is that we may continue to develop relationships that spill into the rhythms of our everyday lives, and that together we might better know and care for one another in the church community of friendship. We often do this through times of eating together, not only because we enjoy eating (and as Presbyterians we certainly know about eating), but also because in Scripture we see that so much of the ministry, love and conversation that God s people have enjoyed over the centuries (and especially during Jesus earthly ministry) happened in the context of sharing meals together. How we will get started: WPC Supper Club and Fellowship participants will be assigned into groups of people who will meet five times during the year. If you have any specific preferences about your group (for example: day and time to meet, include kids or not, couples, singles, or mix, distance willing to travel, gather in fellowship hall, a restaurant, or potluck in members homes, etc.), please let us know when you sign up. How to sign-up: Please look for the sign-up sheet in the church narthex. The First WPC Supper Club and Fellowship will kick-off in September. We look forward to beginning this gathering of the WPC community! Contact Rich Crow at for more info. Food & Fellowship Opportunities Mark your calendars: Lemonade on the Lawn: We have enjoyed a time of fellowship all summer with lemonade and tea on the lawn after the summer service. The last one will be held on Sunday, September 3. On September 10, we return to two Sunday services. Rally Day Brunch: On Sunday, September 10, there will be a Rally Day Brunch between services starting around 9:45 AM. Bring a breakfast food to share and meet the Church School teachers. Fall Potluck: Our fall potluck will be held on Sunday, October 15, at noon in the Fellowship Hall. Bring a dish to share.

The Christian Education Committee recommends the class for ninth graders. The group will meet during the church school hour in the church library. Teachers are Don Schupp and Lucy Lindsay. Please contact either of the teachers or call the church office for more information or to register for the class. An introductory meeting for confirmands and parents will be held on Rally Day, September 10 at 10:30 in the church library. NURSERY AND NURSERY II BRIDGE Nursery care for infants and toddlers is available during worship each Sunday in room 200 We welcome Ludmila McBride to the child care staff of WPC. She joins Carol Smith as co-coordinator of the Nursery and Child Care Program. These two wonderful ladies will be in the nursery and toddler rooms on Sunday mornings during worship and church school time to care for our youngest members. Our child care staff includes Nursery II Bridge coordinator, Becky Guinn, who oversees the WPC program for preschoolers before they transition to Children s Worship. She is upstairs in room 401 during the 11:00 AM service on Sundays. Please take a moment to welcome Ludmila and thank these ladies for their time, patience and love for the little ones. Church member volunteers are needed for both child care rooms and are encouraged to assist the staff members along with the nursery and preschool parent volunteers. Parents are to volunteer for one or two Sundays each quarter. Sign up by seeing any of the child care staff members. CHILDREN S WORSHIP Resuming on September 10, children in first through third grades are invited to participate in a study about how we worship, each Sunday except for Communion Sunday (usually the first Sunday of each month). We believe that coming together to worship God is essential for growing Christians. The children s worship program is designed to help children strengthen their participation in congregational worship. As children understand what we do in worship, they can participate more fully. Children will remain in the sanctuary on Communion Sundays to participate in the sacrament with their families. Acolytes All students grades 4-8 are encouraged to sign up for an opportunity to serve as acolyte for the 11:00 AM worship service, September through May. A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in Memorial Hall (between the sanctuary and chapel). A training session and pizza party will be scheduled in the fall.

8 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Youth Group Schedule of Events The youth group program for fall includes regular meetings on most Sunday evenings where both groups will share a meal together and fellowship time for small group discussion, games and social time.
