1 Page 1 Volume 66 Issue 10 October 2016 It shows the way. Dear Brothers and Sisters, Harbor United Methodist Church Rev. Dr. Abiot Moyo 55 First Parish Road, Scituate MA Church Office: Cell Phone: revdrmoyo@yahoo.com Church harborscituateumc@gmail.com Church website: Called to Serve From the Desk of your Pastor To: All those who supported my Spiritual Pilgrimage to South Korea with money and prayers ~~~ I will never know how to say thank you to you all. A Spiritual Pilgrimage is a journey to a sacred destination in order to develop a closer relationship with God. I truly feel like this spiritual pilgrimage reinvented me. It was truly a privilege and a blessing that I was able to take some time off from my regular schedule and join a 10-day Spiritual Pilgrimage to South Korea with our bishop and other colleagues from our New England Conference. The Journey started by me going to the wrong terminal E instead of B at Logan Airport, Boston. After my daughter Tariro dropped me at terminal E and left, I then realized I was at the wrong terminal. Walking from terminal E to B taught me that no one dies by walking. If you have ever walked a long distance with two heavy bags, you know what I mean. It s not fun! When it was time to board the plane, my carry-on bag was deemed too big for the cabin and was taken away from me at the door. I became very anxious along the way, as I was not sure if my bag would arrive at Incheon International airport in South Korea the same time as our group. For your own information, this was the bag that had all my special clothes to wear during the trip. So you can understand the anxiety. I believe God wanted to teach me a lesson or two about having trust in him. You may be a Christian and going to church, but when stuff happens ~ how do you react? Do you spend a lot of time (like me) being upset about things you couldn t change? This is what is causing some of us to lose our peace and joy in our walk with God. Thankfully, this incident helped me to experience a radical transformation. It also helped me to develop the habit of trusting God in everything. Never will I allow myself again to sweat over small stuff. From Logan Airport, our first layover was at Toronto Airport, Canada. We then left Toronto and arrived at Incheon International airport, South Korea on Tuesday, September 20, We were welcomed by the Senior Pastor, Rev. Hong Eun-Pa, the pastor of Bupyeong Methodist Center and many of his church members and pastors. We were all showered with flowers. I was relieved to know that all my bags had arrived with no problem. So much about worrying. We were then taken for a wonderful reception and orientation at the church. After dinner we were all led to our guest rooms at the church which were better

2 Page 2 than some of the hotels in this country. My roommate was Rev. Richard McSherry, pastor of the Shaftsbury United Methodist and Remington Cooperative Church in Vermont. The next day Wednesday, September 21 st we began our day at 5.00am joining with the members of our host church who were in a "50 Days of Prayer to Have the Grace to Change the World." We were all surprised to see an estimated people coming to such an early morning prayer. It was a moving experience, which all of us who experienced it will never know how to transmit it to our own people. Our Host church is believed to have 16,000 members and 7 worship services every Sunday. Every day we would wake up to the sound of music for the 5.00am prayer. We visited many other churches and sacred places during our few days in South Korea. On September 22 nd we visited the mother church of all Korean Methodism in Seoul, ChungDong First Methodist Church in Korea. This was a church that was started by an American Missionary, Henry Gerhard Appenzeller. We were then taken to see the Seoul Tower also known as the Namsan Tower. It is a communication and observation tower located on Namsan Mountain in central Seoul, South Korea. At 236m (774ft), it marks the highest point in Seoul. From there one is able to have a good view of the whole of the city of Seoul which is the capital city of South Korea. From there you can also see the "Blue House," which is the same as our own White House here in the United States. It was not easy to climb the mountain and get to the tower. If my mother was there, she could have carried me on her back. We would gather and pray at every place we visited. We also visited the Yanghwajin Foreign Missionary Cemetery. Koreans are very proud of all the missionaries who brought the gospel to them. Most of them were Americans like Appenzeller and his wife and family. Therefore many of the missionaries who gave their lives for the Korean people are buried in this cemetery. It was moving to walk from grave to grave listening to the stories of these men and women who gave their lives for the Korean people. We were also able to visit a church which is considered to be one of the biggest Methodist churches in South Korea, Kwang-lim Church and one of the leading Presbyterian churches, Sarang. In all the churches we visited in South Korea, we were shocked to witness how most members are committed to tithing at least 10% of their income to the mission of their local church. This is why those churches are able to engage in effective missions all around the world. It is a joy for them to give generously. The collection of the tithes and offerings in the Korean Church we attended is among the most exciting and meaningful parts of the worship service. It is a time of celebration. We all left South Korea challenged by how much the Korean Christians are willing to invest their time, energy, and financial resources in the building of the Kingdom of God. While I know many faithful members of our Harbor church family, most of us have a lot to learn about faithful commitment from our Korean brothers and sisters. Our mouths often speak louder than our actions, so that our profession of Jesus as Lord is not backed up by the practices of prayer, Bible study and tithing. Korean Christians, on the other hand, don't say much with their mouths, but their actions spoke to our team quite loudly. If here at the Harbor we can also ~ like the Koreans ~ commit ourselves to daily prayer, mission, hospitality, Bible study, and generosity, I promise you, we will also see the same vibrancy and growth that the Methodist Church in South Korea is experiencing. Please visit our Church website after October 10 when Kevin will put more pictures of my Spiritual Pilgrimage for you to enjoy. Amen! Love in Christ, Pastor Abi

3 Page 3 The Scituate Food Pantry Thank you to everyone who donated to the Food Pantry during our special September drive. The Food Pantry was very appreciative. The food items that your neighbors really need are very basic; please, no exotic foods, protein powder or energy drinks. Also thank you to those who volunteered on the 4 Tuesdays last month. Pancake mix and pancake syrup Peanut butter and jelly Fruit juice (Capri Sun juice boxes) Spaghetti sauce Canned ham, Canned chicken Spam, Tuna, Beef stew Cold cereal Jello Saltines Decaf tea, Instant coffee (regular & decaf) Also needed: Tomato soup, Chicken Noodle Soup, Cream of Chicken, Cream of Mushroom. Please join us in this mission opportunity right here for your Scituate neighbors. Any and all donations (including monetary) are gratefully accepted. You may leave them in the wicker basket in Bruce Hall. Thank you. Alice Hamer James 1:22 (NIV): Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Stewardship November is traditionally the month of remembrance, starting with All Saints Day on November 1 st and ending with Thanksgiving gratitude for our many blessings. FYI: United Methodists believe in saints and recognize Matthew, Paul, John, Luke and other early followers of Jesus as saints, and countless numbers of United Methodist churches are named after these saints. United Methodists believe there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human who gave himself a ransom for all (1 Timothy 2:5-6a). United Methodists call people saints because they exemplified the Christian life. In this sense, every Christian can be considered a saint. John Wesley believed we have much to learn from the saints. Here at Harbor, we will also recognize and celebrate All Saints Day on November 6 th and all the saints who from their labors rest. We will remember Christians of every time and place, honoring those who lived faithfully and shared their faith with us, by listing the names of loved ones who died in the past year. We are standing on the shoulders of those who went before us and entrusted this church s vitality and future to us. Let us remember them in November, thanking them for their good and faithful stewardship, and honoring them through our tithes, our prayers and our service in His name. Amen.
